I absolutely adore this record, it's all texture and it has my favorite song transitions on any album. Rudimentary Peni is secretly a Studio band, especially on their second LP Cacophony. Definitely do this one in full, please!

The artwork was another thing that set this band apart, Black President is a memorable track and for 1983 a radical thought. Other punky stuff to check out would be The Mob, Antisect, Amebix, Discharge, Julian Cope and The Teardrop Explodes and the Tom Robinson Band - Power in The Darkness, Up Against The Wall and Sing if You're Glad to be Gay.

I am increasingly impressed with your wide range in music for discussion. I love a vast range from mediaeval music to punk, including classical, ambient, psy-trance, metal, jazz, blues, Japanese and Mongolian, so it is refreshing to find someone who is not unduly restricted. Rudimentary Peni are a fascinating trio with captivating riffs and rhythms. Nick Blinko has lived with schizophrenia and this has had a strong impact on his art and music. I love the way he plays with puns and twisting words around. Other folk have already mentioned Cacophony - a punk concept album based on HP Lovecraft and Cthulu, with some Edgar Allen Poe thrown in for good measure. Pope Adrian 37th was made while Nick was convinced he was the Pope of the same name. It is music from the very cusp of reality/unreality!

Aha divisive music!!!! I love it! and quite contrary to the popular notion that music brings people together. I applaud you once again JP. As Mr Adams (who I get the idea somehow possibly maybe doesn't like Rudimentary Peni' very much) says below '..... it matters not. You're pushing the barriers, and that's all that matters.' Any of us can access the music we want to hear (or think we want to hear) any time but, to be exposed to music we probably would never hear or even know about is the real test (although test of what I don't know). I wouldn't describe myself as a huge fan or Rudi P as I only have a couple of their records but 'Farce' which has eleven (?) songs spread over the two sides of a 7" record is pretty damned good. It is on Crass Records.

The Corpus Christi label released a few bands of this ilk including Conflict, Omega Tribe and Alternative. Alternatives lp " If They Treat You Like Sh!t..."has just been rereleased on CD and digital with the lp arriving late January. It's definitely worth a listen. The lp was originally out in '85 and this is it's first rerelease on vinyl. The band are out giging at the mo.

Rudimentary Peni's a weird one. As this album progresses, the lyrics start to shift from the more sociopolitical to more nightmarish and absurd imagery. The next album, Cacophony, has a lot more complex music on it, with Nick Blinko singing in a more experimental, grotesque and cartoonish style, and lyrics pulled from the HP Lovecraft mythos. After that album, he was briefly institutionalized. In the ensuing years, RP would remain together steadily, releasing a new album roughly every decade or so, always keeping the exact same lineup. Nick Blinko. whose unique, dark and bizarre artwork adorns every RP release has actually become a highly sought after visual artist in his own right. Anyway, whatever your take on them, they are certainly a different breed, even in the punk world

umm, to the extent that I extensively research bands, and at the time I started learning about RP, a potential source of information about the band would have been on Wikipedia, well then, maybe somewhat. If you are trying to clown me or one up me for my wording or some such, I don't really totally understand what the logic of your beef is. But suffice it to say, such alleged plagiarisms to easily searchable with word for word comparisons, which Google will happily do for you..... we are well enough into a digital paradigm that such things are at the ready for the job interviewers and college professors who need to have an apparatus to help them smell plagiarism....

I've been listening to "Death Church", let alone RP, since the late 90's and still wonder about the meaning of many of their songs....and this is one of them. I think 'Psycho Squat' is either describing a mental institution that he once visited (Blinko was institutionalized for a stint), or it's about a condemned building inhabited by insane squaters - hence the track title. My guess is it's the former.

Hi JP. DP from UK. Another punk reaction from Justin? At first I thought, Oh No! Oh No! Oh No, No, No, No, No, No. But then I got drawn in. Their Rotten To The Core lyrics really hit the spot. Not just The Pistols (I was a fan at the time) or The Clash. They could have picked any number of rock stars and denounce them as hypocrites. Don't know anything about Rudimentary Peni, but if they had really made it, would they have been been just the same? Oh, and I probably agree with them about the institution of marriage. My song ref Oh! No etc. are lyrics from Remember (Walking In The Sand) by The Shangri La's.

Yo I'm a huge Strummer fan but the lyrics of Rotten To The Core still resonate with me. I love the punk tradition where the bands are basically audiences for each other. And they're not stars, they're participants in small size explosive events. No stars, no gods, no masters. After the Clash became stars, they were no longer peers of the punters (fans)

I ❤ Joe Strummer as well. It seems like several of the UK punk bands were into raggin on each other. CRASS did about THE CLASH, RUDIMENTARY PENI did about Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer and THE EXPLOITED did about CRASS and Jello Biafra. Even though I dig much of THE EXPLOITED's tunes, I don't care for Wattie and his trash talk about said bands. I'll take Jello and CRASS over THE EXPLOITED all life long!!! Not to mention that Wattie is rumoured to be an 'ex' neo nazi... which wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Even better, all their records are being reissued by Sealed Records. I have Death Church & Cacophony & also a Zounds record Sealed Records reissued & they are all very, very well done. I think it's great because their records sell for a ton of money, even more recent ones. I also have the last reissue of Death Church from back in 2014 & it goes for around $100 on average, so it's great this new label is reissuing all the RP records. They've only released a few so far, but they're eventually doing ALL the RP records. (They also released the newest RP record)

On its day it's OK. It was OK. I don't think I'll go looking for more tomorrow, though. And actually today I'm in a more sophisticated mood, and maybe even romantic, so it's more an *AC - Picnic of Love* kind of day (AC is the polite name for the band whose name sort of rhymes with Annual Count, whose wimpy founder wasn't strong enough to handle his heroin, so ended up being gay and chickening out of life - although the band did stick together long enough to make one final song mocking him for this, I seem to recall). It's a great album. Very romantic. To me it sounds quite "Neil Young" at times (and maybe it was meant to). Great songs like *I'd Love to Have Your Daughter's Hand in Marriage* for instance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqDdd4lsd7Klo80 (No beating round the bush. They just tell it straight out, up front, on your face, that kind of thing.) (Warning: If you're only in the mood for their romantic music, don't play their *Everyone Should Be Killed* . It doesn't have much romantic music on it, so you'd get bored.)

@@malingor7042 I don't want to let the cat out the bag too much on this point, so all I can say is to check out just about any AC song, and follow the comments section for a while. They observe certain traditions. (If that's too much of a pain, maybe search the band's name and the word "gay" inside KZbin, and you might get some indication of what the tradition amounts to.) I'll grant it's a bit stupid. But than that's kind of the point. I wouldn't call myself a homophobe (but if I was, I would probably hide the fact most of the time.) Don't take it too literally. I think I can add that without being needlessly explicit. If you reply, insisting that I be more explicit, I suppose I'll have to comply. Meanwhile maybe enjoy their beautiful rendition of *Hitler Was a Sensitive Man* (it's nice and quick if you don't like the song, so you won't suffer too much if you listen to it). kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDSc4KLas1ggMU
