This suite overall is one of Bach's most beautiful keyboard works. Serkin plays with a refinement and tonal splendor that enhances the music on a piano rather than a harpsichord. His technique in the difficult courante and gigue is crystal clear and the sarabande is played with quiet dignity. A great performance of one of Bach's keyborad jewels

A great performance -- no doubt about that, The only performances I know that rivals it in brillance of articulation. beauty of sound and in its exhilarating effect upon the listener are those i heard Gilels give in New York about 60 years ago and in his recordings of the piece.

Serkin at his sunniest, best period. Thank you ; this an antidote to hasty, uninformed playing for what 'passes ' as 'historic''. an Allemande played in its true character and tonal finesse ; tempo.GUISTO

The Gigue alone is worth the listen...wonderfully rhythmical...and the slow movements!!! Thanks to hotuttoio69 for this. More Library of Congress recordings please, they're an Aladdin's Cave of treasures.

The entire performance is,superb but if I had to choose what part is best, I would have to go with the allemande. The piano sings.

Thanks very much for this post. I didn't know this recording existed. I'm a big Serkin fan, and I greatly enjoyed all the movements except the courante, which I think is too fast, very much in the manner of Gilel's famous 1959 Leningrad performance (whose courante is even a hair faster!). I know the word means "running," but IMHO breathless sprinting extinguishes the music.

The Sarabande played by Mitsuko Uchida seems to me to be much inspired by this performance

This would serve well for study if you wrote the times for which movement starts. Just a tip .

This would be wonderful if there wasn't paper rustling in the background, or whatever that noise is.
