I have a lot of respect for the guy but at the same time there's a reason a lot of his builds fail. Far too much rushing and doing things half assed. Take the time and do it right the first time. Same with your ring and pinion. Calling it now, that axle fails.

Draw a 'C' through the center of your cut line to remove confusion on which line to cut. Common for pipe fitters as we have to mark numerous measurements before getting to the actual cut mark.

Rudy's a lot more professional (as a fabricator) than his Dad, and a lot more tech savvy - ie. uses CAD and his plasma table, sent the axles to a machine shop instead of shortening them himself, actually wears PPE etc. so I'm pretty sure he's had some training outside MORR. Kaulin isn't entirely home-shop-schooled either - they mentioned a little while ago he'd been to community college (or equivalent) to learn proper welding, and probably lots more.

I'm almost certain those inner Cs are supposed to be an interference fit. Heat the inner c with a torch and freeze the tube, set them and let it lock in place. The majority of the strength comes from the interference fit that you ground off
@kstricl
@kstricl 15 күн бұрын
I would say ideally, yes. But, Rudy stated he may have to adjust the camber out on the lake bed once the truck is together, which is why he only tacked them to the tubes. Once he's happy with the alignment he can fully weld the C on both sides and it will never move again.

Torque is important for the sake of stretching the bolts to the proper amount. They work like springs and if you over stretch a spring it won't go back to it's shape. If a bolt is over tightened it will not maintain proper tension on the psrt it's securing. Also it keeps even tension, ever done a brake job and had the rotors feel warped when tightening wheel studs with an impact? The differing tension causes radial imperfections or something like that.
@tomhutchins1046
@tomhutchins1046 16 күн бұрын
Your correct about stretch BUT A short bolt that's all threads has very little stretch. The idea is tight and red lock tight. And yes his tightening and then test torqueing is all wrong. lets see matts use of claw hammers no tape measure's or no torque wrenches could that be the issue? look at the design of the first wrecker designed on cad (with TOM TOM the mechanical engineer's) help then look at the second one done just on a whim no real plan.

Loved the "armchair expert" comment, so true. It's always the people that have never done this type of work, that know best. Some people may actually know what to do. However, they think for whatever reason it best to do it their way, or there is only the one way it can be done. Some people don't get there are many different ways to do things in most cases. Sometimes education gets in the way of some really good wrenching!

Sorry Rudy Me again. I'm not sure but I think that when you set up this type of diff, as well as pinion depth and back lash you also have to set the drag on the crown wheel. You don't just nip the two end adjuster screws up and hope for the best. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will shoot me down. But previously when I've done the job you've just shown I've used a balance scale to set the drag. Who knows 🤷

Its too late now but I would have suggested making that short side 3-4" longer so theres room for brackets to weld on the tube and to get the diff lined up more with the t-case. Having a down and sideways angle on that front driveline is going to cause extreme vibration at 10mph let alone 60plus in the desert.

Its best to wash out the threads and bolts in the ring gear with brake clean then use red locktight. Or they will come loose. Also tightening then checking with a torque wrench does not work due to break away torque the torque wrench needs to be moving at least 1/8 of a turn before it clicks. oh and look up unsprung weight its really important. When your prepping a car you have to think critical what could possibly go wrong and address it before you leave the shop. the old confident no measuring , no planning it wont make no difference will bite you in the --- in that race. Good luck

Cherokee XJs towing capacity is 3,500 lbs without a load leveler, 5,000 with. If you have a tranny cooler the power train will do more than that, easy. But over 3,500 the trailer throws the jeep around pretty easy. You won't want to go more than about 50-55MPH. Less with wind.
