Some real engineering skill in this one, machine is clean and tools well kept. One piece of advice I would give is DON'T earth the weld through the lathe but directly on to the part, the arc will travel through bearings and eventually cause damage and failure. Good work.

So apparently you're not smart enough to know that there are different hardness of Steel and for all you know which you don't know that center pin could be harder than the original Steel. But we wouldn't expect you to understand that because you're lost in la-la land and think you're smarter than what you actually are
@honkie2475 ай бұрын
@@Robett-r4l 46 years in a machine shop. You're correct, I have no idea. Even if the center pin is of a harder steel, the parent metal that is remaining has been reduced by approximately 50% by boring a hole and threading the hole for the center pin. So now you have the same load applied to the hub, but now there is only 50% of the parent metal left to take the stress. Now it will break twice as fast under the same load. Also, threading something in a situation like this causes stress risers, which will be the origination of stress cracks and failure in the parent metal. These types of posts are just clickbait to get views. Have you ever noticed that you NEVER see the repaired part put in service??

These people may not look it, but they are very good Craftsmen. They know what they're doing! And repairing old parts is probably a lot cheaper than buying new parts, even if they only last half as long because of metal fatigue. New parts may not even be readily available. They might have to get one made from scratch. Which would naturally cost a lot more.

Maybe he had the earth clamp on the tail stock 🤠 Perhaps he didn’t really drop the part on the bed when undoing the chuck. Maybe he didn’t really grind the face flat while the part was in a lathe! Perhaps he didn’t use the same threading tool for everything. There were definitely no stress fractures in that piece of previously sheared off bar used to effect the repair. I think his Expert status is intact. Personally I don’t know how anyone can weld in sandals

@Exnay7774 ай бұрын
Go to the previous video...they show the shop that forges complete units...welding is not the way to go...will be broken again, and soon, the way these guys operate their equipment! And, they are weld-happy, problem is there's seldom the proper weld prep and too few passes. Here, he machines most of his weld off the part! But, I suppose that here it's a given the part will not last long, as you get what you pay for...
@artszabo10154 ай бұрын
Back in the old days us drag racers would narrow our rear ends and this is the EXACT method we used to shorten out axles. They held up to 2000 horse power and giant slicks without breaking. You have no clue what you are talking about other than your negative imagination. Art from Ohio
@o4a2lАй бұрын
@@artszabo1015 He's not wrong. The original failed; the repair will fail much quicker (will fatigue/break at the inner weld). A passable field repair, but the guy wastes time: Threading is pointless (doesn't center the shaft any better than a press fit, adds nothing to torsional or transverse strength), ditto for the outer weld & re-machining the flange (a tractor wheel turns too slowly to care). >They held up to 2000 horse power Only torque matters. A farm tractor puts obscene torque on its rear axle -- stump-pulling gears + huge diameter wheels. Comparing dragsters to tractors is also a bit odd -- a dragster only needs to last a few minutes (make a dozen runs before getting torn down), a tractor goes for thousands of hours between rebuilds.
@artszabo1015Ай бұрын
@@o4a2l OK I watched the entire video again just to respond to you. Your theories/formulas are sound, I agree with them. But you vastly underestimate the amount of torque put out by a Hemi with an 871 blower on it attached to a giant set of slicks. You also vastly overestimate a 40 -60 horsepower tractor regardless of the gearing. There is no scientific formula for 'will it break'. We have your educated opinion vs my educated opinion and neither can be settled here in this forum. Only real life as it unfolds will tell the story and neither of us are ever going to see it. Further I don't believe for a second that 'torque' broke that axle. I believe that the tractor rolled and a side impact on that large diameter wheel tried to bend the axle and snapped it off. Further yet; do I believe he could have done a better job? Oh hell yes!! He didn't radius the inside corners on two shoulders creating a stress point to spread out the torsional load. And as you said, the threading was a colossal waste of time, a simple press fit would have been adequate. The relief area for the weld should have had a flat bottom especially for a stick welder. And the quality of the welds was just a little better than awful. So you see, we are not that far apart in our opinions. But, I am a 73 year old man and I have seen a LOT of crazy shit and I say that it won't break. Which in the end is all that matters. Nobody can argue with results. PS: OK my friend, do you want to put your 'cringe' meter to the test? I just stumbled on this and haven't watched it yet. This is what you do in a pinch. I sincerely hope that neither of us ever find ourselves in this predicament. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJmlZYKhp5WYY7M
@o4a2lАй бұрын
@@artszabo1015 Hi again, looked at the video you linked & might have you beat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJmlZYKhp5WYY7M. Always thought some of these might be just clickbait to draw in people like us, but this one's a bit of a head-scratcher -- even though I wouldn't hesitate to call this one clickbait, looks like I'd be wrong: here kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXW2mpKJZ79-ms0 is a jig/special tool the guy made specifically for working with the cage of this exact bearing, and looks like it has been used many times... Might be a really low load/velocity bearing, but then how'd it fail? The well worn jig points to this not being an emergency "limp home"/"try to keep it going 'til the new one gets here" repair, that it lasts long enough to be a workable fix. Or insanely high effort bait? Confusing.
@artszabo1015Ай бұрын
@@o4a2l Very very interesting video. I watched it with great skepticism and came to your exact conclusion for the same reasons. I think this bearing is too big to be from a truck unless it is from a transmission. I'm leaning toward a tractor or some heavy equipment in a low rpm duty. There was a lot of flaking on the races and balls indicating a bearing failure elsewhere sharing the same oil. The flaking built up to the point that it split the outer race. I have no idea why the inner race was cut. I'm with you on this one, I say it is legit and they are going to reuse it.
