If you'd stuck with the Amiga into 1994, you might just have have played one of the most highly regarded games in the Amiga's library.
What blows my mind is that it's an OCS/ECS game - not AGA - designed to run on an A500 with 1MB of chip RAM! yet it looks absolutely stunning! In fact, it looks and feels closer to something you'd find on the SNES or Mega Drive than the Amiga!
The level of difficulty is pretty stiff, but the gameplay is really solid. It would certainly have benefited from support for a controller with more than one button (a limitation of the machine), but in most respects it's one of the best platform-shooters out there.

Such good artwork in this game...those pixels are just popping with colorful detail. The soundtrack's nothing to sneeze at either. It's a shame this isn't available over at Steam, I'd pick this sucker up in a minute. Thank you sir for the longplay...at least I can appreciate this game vicariously. :)

out of nostalgia i went back and played this game on winuae so my thoughts might not be a little squeed i could only get to level 2 so many cheap kills in this game especially at the end of every level just before going thru the door . there are insta kille later in the game ( i had to use code 6717 to complete this game ) and the last level just b4 the final boss is a complete bastard and comes out of nowhere the floaty jump is very annoying to get right on the swinging platforms . and for some reason i could not work out the shooting mechanic sometimes it will allow you too shoot up or diagonal but not always seemed very weird to me but i did finally complete this game .

Definitely one of the better Amiga games I've seen, in that it actually looks like it could have been a proper console platform game on the likes of PC Engine, Genesis or SNES, which is a compliment as far as I'm concerned. The one thing it's lacking is some additional sound fx for things like when you fire or get hit by enemies and such. Having that would really round out the package. Would kinda like to see a SNES conversion of this with that stuff added. And they could also add a bit more visual variety in the levels, particularly the colour palettes, and some extra background layers and parallax there too. That would be cool.

I've seen people complaining about scrolling in R'n'T. Amiga users aren't very forgiving when it comes to scrolling. I've seen some highly praised 16-bit console games with graphics that can't aven compare to this masterpiece and had really choppy movement. People forgot that this game worked on a 1MB A500... And yeah, maybe there's no paralax, but the backgrounds are beautiful with nice depth to them. I prefer this over often confusing paralax in many games.
@gumdeo

other Amiga games managed smooth scrolling, and as you say this game doesn't have parallax (or EHB either) so why is the scrolling a mess?
@mattx5499
@mattx5499 Жыл бұрын
@@gumdeo To me scrolling in RnT is smooth enough. I don't care about parallax or EHB if the game is such high quality. Look at the animations instead. Everything is alive. This freaking gold runs on a hardware designed in the mid 80's and looks better than dozens of AGA games on 2MB. The graphics are crisp AF. Look at the shading on everything. It has texture. This is pixel art Mona Lisa. Look how these passive backgrounds are shaded to give you sense of depth with the platforms being clearly on the front. It's almost like 3D. They shown that no parallax may be equally beautiful. Even today you rarely see such polished pixel art.

@@pnvgordinho It would hard to see much difference even with 256 colours on screen as there is so much detail. Perhaps a bit more shading in the backgrounds would have been there though. CD32 might have had different music and 3D motion video for intro's and cut scenes. I played on my Amiga1200 which I still have, it's a beautiful game but really only on a CRT/Monitor screen.

@@skyhawk77 The cd32 version would be able to have a lot more levels and graphics, due to the cd. And I don't know for sure but if the cd loads faster than floppy, it could make a giant difference because they would be able to take graphics out of memory and load new ones faster. It would help not only to load new levels but also in game graphics.

I gotta be a killjoy here and say that I played this to completion back in the day and didn't see the appeal. Looking at this video, I think the problem is that the moving and shooting just isn't satisfying. You need to keep stopping to shoot enemies multiple times, and again as the generators pump out more enemies. (Don't walk over active generators!) Firing up and down most slopes is awkward as they don't match the controller's diagonals. You have to stand still to fire diagonally at all. This game could be improved by: - Making it easier to fire in any direction while moving. (Shoulder buttons? 16-directional second stick? Rotational aiming?) - Adding a 2-player mode, even if only by link-up. Splitting up or working together to complete a level would be fun. P.S. Regarding some text in the video description: You may already know, but every C64 and Amiga was always able to handle 2 button joysticks. The difficult part was finding such joysticks!
@RussDnB
@RussDnB 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting suggestions for improvement, but a little flawed. - A second stick? Twin stick shooters weren't a common thing back then, and most games (and indeed people on the Amiga) basically lived on 8 way single button joysticks. If they were lucky, maybe 2 button. But not very often. - A 2 player mode does sound interesting. But if a game isn't explicitly MADE for 2 player, then there's no guarantee it would work. Do both players stay on the same screen? Do they share powers or should there be additional power ups to ensure they each have a fair chance of the boosts available? Again. Nice hypothetical ideas, but not really much to work on. The only thing I wished the devs could have done was optimise and get a little better frame rate going on. But even then, I had immense fun with this game when I was a young un.

@iXien 4 жыл бұрын
The problem of the monster generator never disturbed me so I suppose it's a question of taste. You're right with this problem between diagonal shots and enemies position but it's difficult to correct this on retro system with only one control system. Maybe nowadays with 2 analog sticks. But if you play this game installed with WHDLoad, 2 button of joypad replace up to jump and this add to the gameplay. Another flaw is the 25fps framerate. But it's the sacrifice for so many things moving on an standard A500 with 1mb RAM. Nevertheless, one of the best platformers on Amiga, and personally I think a great game, with flaws like any others but so many fun elements. History is full of cool games, and cool games not all need to be perfect and revolutionary 😎
@rafaellima83
@rafaellima83 3 жыл бұрын
@@iXien The problem isn't just that there are lots of thing moving.... it doesn't to be kind honest. The problem is that the game runs at a big resolution with 32 colors. Blitting 32 colors shapes is very slow. Making a 50 fps 32 colors action game on an OCS system was very challenging.

The recording is done at the full 50hz PAL screen refresh and is designed to highlight that everything is captured in the output stream and hasn't been removed as a result of KZbin encoding. This doesn't mean that the game always operates internally at 50 FPS; it just differentiates the video from those that predate KZbin support for higher frame rates.
