2 weeks ago (roughly)my father, stepmother, sister, grandmother, cousin and his son all went up to jackman for a week long deer hunt/Vaca. 5th year we've gone. Amazing views (even the corridor was striking (not in the amount deforestation it caused, but in the potential ground for game in the coming years now a wrench has been tossed in the mix), awesome locals, good times. So many moose and birds it wasn't funny. Handful of big does seen but only 1 buck and gram couldn't get a good shot. Anyways. In years past I'd seen lots of grouse and this year grabbed my scattergun just in case. I only have a break action NEF 12, but it has alot of sentimental value, being a gift from dad/gramps when I was a teen, and being one of the few things that survived a house fire we had years ago. And boy are they reliable. Being the only one to bring one, I had solo dibs on gamebirds. This was the first year I got to nab grouse and boy o boy was it fun. I only grabbed 4 birds due to limited deer time, and a few trips into the woods were I grabbed my rifle instead but those 4 were worth their weight in gold to me. It not only was really fun type of hunting, but having only eaten partridge(grouse) a couple times and forgotten the taste, I was floored at how amazing the breast meat was. We used most of the thigh scraps too but man do they take good with just some butter, alittle garlic, salt and a redneck flour tossing. I recently found your channel while messing around at our luxury Wi-Fi included camp which was a rarity for us and have enjoyed watching your videos as a way to relive it I can't wait to get up there next year a little more prepared

Just a suggestion; try out some non linear or the dynamic mesh style ear plugs to wear when hunting. I use the AXIL dynamic mesh filtering plugs which are rated to reduce loud noises by up to 33 decibels. They do reduce your hearing by 5 decibels with normal sounds but I find that a minimal hinderence and my hearing is messed up from a lifetime of shooting. Easy tradeoff. I also wear “range style” outers as well, ie, ear muffs. The types I use don”t interfere with rifle/shotgun use and have an NRR of 28. I dont’t see many wear the outers when hunting but the innners (plugs) are getting more common with bird hunters. Not sure how Maine’s regs are but where I live the amplifcation of the range muffs is not prohibitted but another state I lived in many years ago prohibitted the use of sound amplification for hunting, just an FYSA. I shot probably thousands of rounds as a teen and young man often with no hearing protection and later was a machinegunner in the USMC and as a result have tinnitus and bad hearing overall, its not fun and is something I’ve had to deal with for over twenty years. If I could offer just one piece of advice to a younger me, it would be to protect my hearing, no joke.

Yes, thanks for bringing that up. I've been meaning to get some and keep putting it off. I definitely shot far too often to be going without them especially when ducking or goose hunting with others. I'll definitely pick some up for the next season and check out the ones you mentioned. Thanks for the reminder!

3 ain't too shabby! That's pretty much how we hunt Dusky Grouse out here in CO. Got to be honest. As I'm elk hunting, I'm usually looking for grouse. If I happen to see an elk, that's great also. LoL!!

Id like to chase that species one-day! I do the same thing with deer here 😂 if i get board i just start going after grouse

Great video! A bit of an off topic question, but what is your go to rod for salmon and brook trout fishing?
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I like to use a 9 ft 6wt because of the larger flies I sometimes use for trout and salmon. but the golden rule for Maine trout and salmon is a 9' 5 wt

Curious why you guys use a shotgun instead of a .22? My brother and I use a 22 with quiet rounds, I have red dot scope mount on it and with the quiet rounds the other birds don’t spook If there are others around, then you can take out a whole Group one at a time,

Jesse, I need your help! I have to drive up to Bangor next week to visit my brother in law and his douchebag family. I’d like to keep my sanity, so I figured I’d do some fishing in local rivers. Any idea which rivers are still open this time of year near Bangor, like a 20min driving distance? I’ve checked the IF&W website, but haven’t had any luck with their special fishing season exemptions. Not trying to spot burn, just looking for a River that’s still open in the fall. Thanks

Another great video! Seeing that Bull Moose at the end of the day was the icing on the cake. How late in the year are the roads usually clear in the NMW? I might have to take another drive up before the deep snow comes!
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's different every year as far as timing goes. However, around this time of year the roads could be clear one day and covered the next so just keep tabs on the weather. Also, some of the logging roads are plowed and can be accessed during the winter just be careful because its more like an ice road

I have one question, this is really right way to shoot and hunt when bird 🐦 is seats on ground ?
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
In our local culture this is how people do it. We'll take a wing shot if necessary but would prefer a clean kill on the ground to preserve the meat. Our birds dont often see people as well so it can be quite the task to get them to fly. They instead prefer to run and hide in cover. Thats how I get so much footage of them. those weren’t birds I shot just chased them around the woods with my camera for a while 😂 . I get the ethical debate, however, my stance is I would prefer to get a clean kill without touching the meat. Rather than taking a wing shot that inevitably hits the breast and hope I can recover the bird. One day when I get a dog that might change.

Great eyes. That's probably my biggest downfall, not being able to see them (or deer) in the brush. I usually have to hear them first and then I can hone in on the sound to find them.

It can be difficult for sure! I've always been lucky to have a good eye for them but I still cant imagine how many I miss, or dont see that were there. Always been curious about that

i cant go hunting till next year ( cuz firearms processing and all that bs) so here i am trying not to watch hunting videos, especially about ones involving the very animal i want to hunt.. lol. also damn that was lucky on the 3rd shot he went down. usually when its the 3rd shot, its another miss.
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
thats too bad but i'll have plenty of videos here to get you by till next season. He winged it on the second shot and it crashed into a tree still alive so that was a finishing shot
