Watching this is very much like watching Kennedy get off Air Force 1 in Dallas. Don’t go! Two weeks from this race Ruffian dies in her Match Race. No one knew what was to come….

Two weeks later came the match race and an injury out of the gate that exploded 30 seconds later because of her unparalleled dynamism. Fierce, powerful, beautiful, and one of a kind.

Yes. She incurred the initial fracture leaving the gate when she jammed that right ankle in the dirt pivoting because of a bird that flew by that distracted her. You can see it right before the gate opens. She ran a quarter mile on a fractured ankle until it shattered. Most people don’t understand that. They think she took a bad step. No, it was not a bad step. The bad step was out of the gate….that’s when the injury happened. She covered a quarter mile in 23 seconds on a fractured ankle (sesamoid). What horse does that?

Secretariats time for the Belmont at 2:24 vs Ruffians 2:27.2 using the standard 5th per length gives Secretariats margin about 17 lengths over Ruffian which is pretty impressive considering how great of a filly she was.

Yes, but Ruffian was galloping and nobody really challenged her out of the gate the way Sham challenged Secretariat right out of the gate. It was a much differently run race and turcotte just allowed Secretariat to open up whereas Vasquez always tried to keep Ruffian in hand and rate her.

Secretariat lost five races and got beat three times in his 3 year old season. Ruffian was never beaten and was unchallenged and undefeated in her 3 year old season.

I would have loved to see Rachel Alexandra run a mile and a half. If she had run in the Belmont stakes there would have been an other gravestone marker in the infield.
