This is pure funk. The song is from 1974 written by Stevie Wonder…The single was a hit in the United States, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number one on the Cash Box Top 100. It was among the earliest hits to use the guitar talk box, by Tony Maiden. Rufus won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus for the song at the 17th Annual Grammy Awards in 1975.

Rufus is funk at it’s finest. My dad loved them and that’s how I discovered the amazing Chaka Kahn. When I got a little older she was doing her thing as a solo artist. You need to check out her songs too.

Fantastic performance of a killer Stevie Wonder tune. Chaka's awesome, always. So much to love in this, my first hearing of both she and the band: the guitar bend answering the title phrase, the talk box, the heavy breathing, lololol! ✌😘🎶🎹🎸🔥💞

The story behind this is so great - Rufus and Chaka Khan did a version of Stevie Wonder's "Maybe Your Baby (Done Made Some Other Plans) and Stevie heard it and liked it. So Rufus' manager found out and told them that he'd bring Stevie to their next recording session. They didn't believe him. But the next session, Stevie was there and had some songs to offer. He played one to Chaka, and she said, "What else have you got?". He played another, and she rejected that too. At the time, she was 20 and heavily pregnant with her daughter, so maybe not feeling super comfortable or patient. Then Stevie asked, What sign are you?" She said, "Aries/Pisces" and he said, "I've got something for you" and then started playing the opening notes. She liked it, and then co-wrote it, but didn't realize that she should take a song co-writing credit! So he copy wrote it alone. When she started singing it the way she wanted, he said, "No, no, no, no" and showed her what he thought it should be. It became her first hit with Rufus.

This song brings back so many memories. My father had a restaurant on a lake when I was a kid. He served the best barbecue. Most of the dining took place outside but there was a dance floor and Jukebox inside. People played this song out constantly. I still love it today. I grew up in Minnesota and frequented a bar called The Cabooze in Minneapolis. Every Sunday night a local band, Greazy Meal, would jam out funk, old soul and groovy rock. One night, my wife and I took another couple to see them perform, and perhaps midway through their set the lead singer spotted Chaka Khan in the audience. He stopped the show, professed his love for her music and basically begged for her to join him on stage to perform one of her songs with them. Thankfully for everyone she agreed and the band broke right into "Tell Me Something Good." She was absolutely incredible live, and the energy throughout the bar was palpable. Very cool.
