Hey there! I don't know how I found you but here I am! I have been fascinated with wool rugs since I was 6 years old....here I am at 59 😊 I have arthritis in my hands but I truly want to start doing this. To be able to pass along a rug that will last over 100 years is such a gift though I'm hesitant because just washing silverware my hands cramp and fingers don't work. But, you know what...the heck with it!!! I'm going to jump in, husband won't be too happy but what does he know, lol. I'll let you know when I go to get started and wow what a collection of needlework wool available on the auction sites!! Thank you so much for such a great channel 💗

One question I used felt on the back of my mug rugs and am whipping the edges. I used heat bond material to bond the two together to make it firmer. Is there any heat bond or similar product you can recommend because the one I bought didn't work well.

It's not easy! Finishing is a bear, and that's why so many people hook and then leave their pieces languishing. It's rough to approach but you do get the hang of it, and you just attack it when you're in a good frame of mind!××

This video was so helpful. I started binding my first project yesterday, and ended up throwing it down and walking away in a huff. I decided to seek your video out today. I do have a question. I have been using the book Intro to rug hooking by Kris Miller. The method she uses is with twill tape, but she doesn't stitch it down and you don't use cording. You pin the twill in place and then whip stitch your yarn around to the front and down next to the loops. It seems easy and fast, but I wonder how well it protects the loops on the edge from wear and tear, as you talked about. Mine is a wall hanging, so shouldn't matter, but I wondered what your thoughts were on this technique. Thanks so much for everything you do to educate rug hookers.

Do you use monkscloth, linen, burlap as foundation for your rug hooking? Your demonstrations are excellent; I really enjoy watching and am learning a lot! Thank you!
@RibbonCandyHooking Жыл бұрын
I use all (including Rug Warp) it depends on whether I'm rug hooking or doing punch needle and material I use (wool strips, silk ties, yarn, fancy fibre etc.) or whatever material I have lying around when the urge to start a project takes me.

For the last two finishes, I’m wondering about their merits for floor rugs. Will one wear better, could the cording cause tripping?
@RibbonCandyHooking4 жыл бұрын
Yes, almost certainly someone will trip on it. For the video I used a really large cord so it was easy to see what I was doing. You'd use a smaller gauge smaller thickness cord most likely and that'd be less of a tripper! I'm doing on more whip finish video tomorrow (Tuesday) which will be another good durable option with less height. Also, did you see my message that I'm in Hamden, CT and I teach. Also Joyce and Donna at Whispering Hill in Woodstock CT and Cheryl at Whimsical Woolens in Holden MA.

Do you put glue under your rug ?
@RibbonCandyHooking Жыл бұрын
No, I never do. The loops will never fall out on a million years guaranteed. And the glue has potential to leave residue and become brittle over time. Some people do but I don't think the benefits outweigh the risks so no. Xxx

Love love your videos and style of teaching. You do amazing work . The halloween one your gonna be doing is cool . Have a question though.. Is there a reason you needle the whipping yarn in from bottom to top or is it a choice? I think I would find it top to bottom. Thank you!!
@RibbonCandyHooking4 жыл бұрын
You could absolutely do top to bottom or bottom to top. I often do things just because I think it's easier for the camera to see me one way or another. But no matter which way you're whipping, it's the right way!

What stops them coming undone either punching or hooking 😊
@RibbonCandyHooking3 жыл бұрын
Great question. It's the tension in the weave that's holding the strand or strip plus the added pressure on all sides from all the loops around them. The back fabrics are all tight. Seems like pieces would fall out but they never do
@nerysmorris2593 жыл бұрын
@@RibbonCandyHooking so even when it’s on the floor as a rug they still stay or would it be best to glue or something Sorry Im desperate to have a go but I don’t want it to fall apart on me
@RibbonCandyHooking3 жыл бұрын
@@nerysmorris259 no don't glue. That'll kill it. It really won't come apart whether it's punched or hooked... It'll be fine

@k2990j3 жыл бұрын
This might be obvious, but are these washable since it’s all natural materials (no glues)?
@RibbonCandyHooking3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the backing. Older rugs on burlap are not at all washable bc the burlap will rot when it's wet. Newer backings can wash but if it's loaded with wool the wool can always shrink and do unpredictable things. Most people do a little surface wash, often rubbing snow in the winter. The loops are so tight all the dust and dirt is sitting on the surface and not in the pile so surface cleaning and a careful vacuum is usually what people do
