@bobbler424 жыл бұрын
gnomology Amen to that. I reckon the “just get on with it” approach would be strongly encouraged by stopping the clock ‘TIL the ball is out, abolish most of the penalties from the engagement sequence, and only giving pens for offside or collapsing once the ball is in. Might have to allow props to punch their opposite numbers in cases of binding on the arm.

This game was the watershed for english rugby..they hired woodward soon after and tried to play more expansive dynamic game to compete at the world stage..brings back some great memories, the quarter final was also great from the abs..pity they didn't win the thing but then we wouldn't been as good a film re. mandela many years later..

Great win for NZ. Lomu really was the difference between the teams really. Basically the same teams had played each other in November 1993 and England won 15-9.
@xpat738 жыл бұрын
Mark Graham Yeah there are some additions. But you also lost some good players. No Timu and no Tuigamala as they had both gone to league by 1995. The tight 5 is identical and the back row is Joseph/Zinzan/Pene v Brewer/Kronfeld/Zinzan. I would call that about even given Pene's form in 1993. Maybe Kronfeld gives some more mobility.
@rahowherox11774 жыл бұрын
Lol NZ 15 points up with jonah touching ball 1ce.. where he flattened Catt, but had osbourne in support (ie probably a try no matter what winger instead of jonah.

Like the Kiwi commentary on this. Very fair minded and they recognised the ability of this England team. A disastrous first half mainly due to Rob Andrew's inept performance in the first half which never gave the team a chance to get a foothold in the game. Although probably partly due to the kiwis relaxing we drew the second half which was a fairer reflection of both teams ability. Bourne out by the tight England victory at Twickenham a year later.

The greatest generation of Rugby players to never win a world cup. There were some left overs from 87, but guys like Little, Bunce, Kronfeld, Wilson & of course the incomparable Lomu never tasted World Cup success in 95 or 99. This game will forever be remembered for Lomu’s four tries… but this game was a showcase of skills from an All Black team at the peak of its powers.

New Zealand were incredible in the mid 90s and 96 was probably their best side ever put out. England were a tough bunch with a bit of flair and that pack would compete with anyone. What if Guscott had Lomu outside on one of his breaks ??? Anyway great game, Kronfeld and Brooke were awesome in this!

England's pack was pretty good at this time. But frankly, and I remember thinking this at the time, the England backs looked short on confidence and almost scared. Catt was shcokingly bad in this game. But again, had Lomu not been on the field it might have been a different matter.

Jonah Lomu was heavier and/or taller than all the forwards, including the props and locks, with the exception of Martin Johnson who was same weight and significantly taller. This puts into perspective that Jonah wouldn’t have had as big of an impact had his career started in 2004 rather than 1994. By that time, most guys were at least the same size as him.
@JP12348157 ай бұрын
Johnson only 2 inches taller. Height has nothing to do with it. The best winger I've ever seen (Rugby Union and League combined) was Martin Offiah. His record is freakish. He's only just over 6 foot but his speed, combined with finishing ability was awesome

+Robert Boyle not at all. they played pretty much with same sides 1 or years earlier and lost. it definitely wasn't an extremely strong new zealand generation, save for monster lomu.
@robbietitchener69788 жыл бұрын
+drunkensailor112 I have to disagree with you here, for two main reasons: 1. Except for Osborne & Brewer, the rest of this ABs team would count as AB "greats". Osborne & Brewer were "very goods" with only his amount of injuries keeping Brewer back from being a great. 2. Only 5 of the AB forwards in this game also played in 1993, and of the backs, only Wilson (in his 2nd test) and Bunce in this game played vs Eng in 1993. In fact, there were more English players from 1993 who also played in this game than ABs.

Seen a lot of trash talk from NZ in the comments. This wasnt a great NZ side. Some excellent players and a great leader, but without Lomu, they would have struggled in this game. Lomu was an absolute beast though. I was 5 at the time of this game and, even as an English kid, I fell in love with Lomu. For what it's worth, this wasnt a great English side. Many of the players were way past their peak and 2 or 3 were just not good enough
@rory75902 жыл бұрын
The NZ record in the following year - largely without Lomu against South Africa - proves that they were a great side. The England time, at the time were highly confident having just won a Grand Slam of results in Europe, beaten NZ the last time they met in 1993 and beaten the WC holders, Australia the week before this match. They had players in their team that had never experienced a loss for England before - and thought they were heading for World Champion status before this game. Frankly, your rugby analysis is very poor.

Yes, the 'run everything’ policy kept the game very loose, especially in the end stages of the matches the All Blacks played in 1995. They tightened up a lot in 1996, I think mainly because of the re-introduction of Michael Jones’ aggressive tackling in the fringe defense.
