An important starting point on Galthie's system is that he defends with the 15 and 10 deep and wingers on the line. Enables wingers to run less, a better coverage of the kicks and to have your 2 best kickers to kick the ball back.

I think Dusautoir mentioned something very true on the Scotland game. When you defend a lot, you start to lose your cool attitude and you start to be too aggressive. And you pay the price as penalties. A very good point for me.

Thanks. I think it highlights what has happened to Wales since Edwards left. From this stereotyped and simple 'drill' type defence, they've tried to encourage more individual decision-making in defence. Result = uncoordinated "shooters", uncoordinated tackle entry etc

Hi! Yeah, Wales are still finding their feet in defence but I thought the tackle selection was much better vs England. I'm interested to see how they develop.

in the red zone the French defend the ball carrier by putting the knee on the ground, they do not advance on the tackle but they bring the man to the ground in order to contend the ball. in the match with Italy it was like this and it cannot be done .. ..in this video it looks very good

Some Fly Half will maybe kick a bit more the ball behind french wingers, because 11 or 14 do not cover well a zone as they are on the same line as 10-12-13.
@ContactCoach4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Aleks. That is the risk and puts a lot of pressure on the 1/2 players in the back field.

It’s a rugby league defence system that edwards did with Wales for years b4going to France.. in league the ball is the threat hence why the high and low combined tackle .. the high tackler obviously preventing any offload

@yoe914 жыл бұрын
Interesting video as always. Why do you think France are committing the penalties though ? Is it just individual egg-headed plays and they just need to get smarter with time, or do you think it's due to something more systemic ?
@ContactCoach4 жыл бұрын
Hey, Yoe. Hope you're doing well. Good question and I think it's a mix. You can look at the red card in Scotland and point towards that being stupid. Other things France are penalized for being offside- that should be sorted fast. Ruck penalties are tricky as the policy is to attack rucks aggressively in defense. This comes with pros and cons. The big con being understanding the referee and picking your battles. I think France will be much improved in this area come the Six Nations in 2021.
@yoe914 жыл бұрын
@@ContactCoach Hey man. I see. You could also make the argument the offsides/ruck pens might be in part due to Top 14 Rugby being a bit slower than other leagues and the players having trouble adapting to the int'l game.

I noticed in a lot of the clips (not all) that France's 9 seems to be staying on the wing and not really getting involved (even though Dupont is a great tackler imo). Do you think this is tactical? or just a product of the flow of the game?

@Nathan-uj5sl4 жыл бұрын
so now how do you beat that kind of defence, any ideas?
@ContactCoach4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan. Now this is easier said than done but a lot comes down to having a great platform through a dominant set-piece. That sets in motion carry dominance (winning the gain line). If an attack can get on the front foot that makes ruck efficiency (carry + effective clear out) easier as the defence are less prepared and retreating. It's a balance of not having too many players in an attacking ruck but also ensuring you're keeping fast ball. What you might see, if the attack does not get ascendancy early, the will kick to avoid the contest.

It can, and that depends a lot on the back-field setup. No defence is fool-proof but if a team attacks only one way, it might be enough.

Do you expect them to defend as narrow against the likes of England?
@ContactCoach4 жыл бұрын
It will be so interesting to see how they tweak things but I do not envisage a huge shift. I'm more interested to see how (if) England mix the game up. If it's an arm-wrestle at the ruck I expect a lot of kicking from England. If they get on the front foot then maybe some more phases (hopefully!). It's a young French team so it's a bit unknown right now.
