A great reaction which shows a good understanding of the game. Just a couple of things. Many Americans don't understand how a player can run through the opposing team without being tackled because they don't realise how wide a rugby field is. Also, if you lift a player in a tackle then it is your responsibility to make sure that you do not tip the player beyond the horizontal i.e. they do not go head first into the ground.

I love rugby as much as I love football there's no real reason to bash it. Footballers stay down because it's incentivised. The ref only pays attention when you hit the ground or are physically injured. Rugby players would do the same if the benefit of it was the same. With the increase of Tmo checks more rugby players are staying down after collisions because they will go back and penalise the other team

Easiest way to know who are the faster players is to check their numbers on the back of their jerseys. No 9 to 15 are the faster players on the team. 11 and 14 are the Wingers. They are the men with the jet shoes on. No 1 to 8 is the men that do all the heavy lifting and grunt work in the scrums and line outs.

The equivalent of a Touchdown is called a Try, but in Rugby you have to literally touch the ball down to score. "In Touch” means out of bounds. If you drop the ball forwards it’s called a Knock On, and the opponent is then awarded a Scrum Penalty.
@Badgersj
@Badgersj Ай бұрын
Which is really odd, because in American football the equivalent of a try is a "touchdown", even though they don't have to touch it down! Shows American football's origins in Rugby. In Rugby, originally you didn't score points for a try, but it did give you the right to kick at the goal, it was known as a "try at goal". Now the try is the main point scorer and the following kick at goal is known as a "conversion", giving extra points on top of the try.

Tackling in rugby is more technical than American football. You can't tackle above the shoulders, so no arms around neck or head. You're not allowed to "shoulder charge" tackle - i.e. dive and use momentum to knock a player over WITHOUT wrapping the arms. Basically, for a tackle to be legal, you have to wrap your arms around the opposing player. That's why it's so darn difficult to get some of those big guys down. You can dive and wrap your arms around the tree trunk legs if you want to, but you're risking a rising knee to the face or collar bone. That is why most of the tackles you see are at waist/chest height.

This was amazing-- each clip clips was more unbelievable than the one before it! I like to've fell out when the player picked up his opponent and used him as a battering ram...and then ol' #3 made that unbelievable run, looking like he was supercharged and yet seeming to pick up even more speed as he ran...and it just kept on like that, getting better and better. Thanks! (I'm still laughing when I think of that battering ram thing...).

4:36 kicking the ball while in play you must kick the ball directly and only you or a player that was on side/behind may contend for the ball. If you are attempting to kick for goal while in play then the ball must touch the ground before kicking this is called a drop kick and if converted is worth 3 points.

Rugby is all about creating space or dynamic overload… You’re trying to get space for your fast guys, or your huge guys running at little guys (the fast guys are usually little)… If you’re truly blessed your team has players like Jonah Lomu or Ndolo who was enormous and rapid so it didn’t matter who was in front of him

The two wingers are usually the fastest players, but usually plays revolve around punching holes or finding gaps in defence. Everyone support each other, so even the fastest winger will have a support runner near them to take the ball if needed. Players will sometimes deliberately delay the pass to draw in the defenders, before offloading the ball to a team-mate to break defence and score. You also often see the biggest and slowest guys on the team score, unlike NFL, every player have a chance to score

In touch means they basically went out of bounds. A try is when you score or the equivalent of a TD. You’ve also seen some clips here where it’s actually 7s I.e there’s 7 men on the field instead of 15 - this is more fast guys and the ultimate test of endurance as the field is the same size! I would actually say Rugby is more strict on tackling so you must use your arms and everyone is taught to tackle low.

We had a rugby team in high school, no football but soccer and rugby. Yeah you got hit really hard with no protective equipment. I remember playing football in the Navy, I remember jumping up to catch a pass when I was hit by a guy who used to play for the Michigan state and he nailed me when I was in midair. I remember hitting the concrete and my head bouncing up where I caught a microsecond glimpse of my teammates going crazy because I had amazingly caught that ball. I woke up 2 hours later in the Naval hospital with a severe concussion. Point being you play on concrete your going to get hurt. Hey bring it on.

Rugby's got everything from other big field team sports combined. Every body type has a place, everyone gets to touch the ball and run with it, everyone gets to tackle. Speaking of tackling, none of the NFL style hits and 'spearing' are allowed at all, and will be penalized, so learning how to actually do a proper tackle is required. And those guys mean mugging each other on the field will be hugging and buying each other round after round of drinks after the game. Best sport in the world, and a true brother/sisterhood beyond that.

4:30 the idea with rugby is that different positions have different sizes and skills, so it's often about trying to manipulate where people are to get mismatches or overlaps. Imagine it as being like in the NFL, but if a tackle is made, there is another snap IMMEDIATELY or the other team gets the ball, and so whoever gets there first has to react accordingly. Each play is called a 'phase', so when a team keeps control of the ball for a long time it's called 'going through the phases'. It's why the scrum-half (#9) tends to be small and quick, because they are the main passer on the team so they have to get to those tackles fast to set the next move. Get the right plays and formations and you can end up with situations that would be like William Perry running short yardage at the opposition's punter, or Calvin Johnson going deep in man coverage against a lineman. "The kick thing" is complicated, as there are a number of rules around it, but the basic thing is that essentially, you can advance the ball by kicking and both teams can compete for the ball once it's been kicked - however from the kicking team, only players who were behind the ball when it was kicked can play the ball. Everybody else is offside, but they are put back 'onside' when they are overtaken by somebody who was behind the ball when it was kicked. Because there is no blocking in rugby and you can't throw the ball forward, there are different types of kicks to advance the ball - from the 'grubber' (like an onside kick style), the 'crossfield kick' (essentially a kick pass from one side of the pitch to the other) and the 'up and under' or 'Garryowen' (a high hangtime kick designed to create a jump catch situation where both teams can fight for the ball upfield) are attacking kicks. Teams will also just kick the ball away similar to going three-and-out in American Football, but because of the way rugby works, they will simply do this when the attack has stalled, and this could take anything from one play to twenty or thirty. Or even none, because, with no blocking, the deep-lying player fielding the kick might see no good option ahead of him and just punt back. It's very common to see the scrum-half kick directly so that the coverage can get a running headstart and put pressure on the catching team, this is equivalent to a QB pooch punt, and is called a "box kick".

An American here who has been watching rugby since the 1990’s. Also understand that they don’t have offensive/defensive/special teams. These folks go full force for 40 minutes, get a 20 minute half break, then go another 40 minutes. Non-stop. Most people who leave the field are because of injury. The don’t have an oxygen tank on the sideline to go take hits off of after one of those 100 meter runs. “Give blood, play rugby”

The main thing would be just not knowing how to play the game as good as someone who’s grown up with it, I think there are plenty of Rugby players that could make the switch and NFL players that could also but it’s not a question of physicality or athleticism but a question of adapting to a different game! They have some similarities but at the end of the day are very different games!

loving this rugby content. You can kick the ball at any time. But obviously you lose posession. The only people on your team that can then go for the ball that you kicked, must of been behind you when you kicked it. If you see space in behind the defence and youre running fast, you can kick it yourself and hopefully the defence has to spin around and you can burn them to go and get the ball yourself. But they should have their full back behind there. He is typically the last line of defence, but they arent always there. Takes good vision to kick it and collect it yourself

Try to find some clips showing after a brutal defensive tackle where in union the tackled player gets piled on by multiple players and still tries to get the ball out backwards to a team mate, once the pack gets off he immediately re-joins the attack or if they lose the ball is immediately in the defensive line. Rugby league is different where multiple players will brutally get the ball carrier to the floor, as soon as he he hits the floor the defenders must immediately get off him but he MUST immediately (unless seriously hurt) get to his feet to play the ball. Theres no rest regardless of what happens. If an injured player isnt seriously injured he must hand the ball to a team mate to keep the game going and either get off the pitch himself or get medical assistance on the pitch away from the action.

Generally the quickest players on a rugby team are likely to be the wings (11 and 14), but other backs (9, 10, 12, 13) ought to have decent pace. The one back is the full back (15) who is the last line of defence, must be a brave defender, but real pace makes them a great full back who can counter-attack with the wings. A really quick 'back three' is a headache for the opposition.

Also, all players stay on the pitch for the full game (inless injured or sent off). So your phrase "the defense ......." doesn't mean anything, we are all attacking or defending during the game . Lastly, you will notice the player numbers start at 1 and assend. Players 1 to 8 are usually the biggest and strongest and 9-15 are smaller but faster. Lomu was the exception, he was big and fast
