South African kids start playing rugby in primary school; at the youngest levels we play across only half the field, and later on when older graduate to the full field, but in all cases in bare feet as no togs allowed in those age groups.

I played in Craven Week when I was 14yr I loved playing rugby but sadly I was not selected for pro rugby. Either way I enjoyed playing amateur and some touch rugby in my later years. Greatest sport ever.

Speaking of history, the guy he was talking about, Danie Craven, is also one of the reasons Argentinian rugby is as good as it is (he went there to grow the game decades ago). And Argentina is paying it forward to grow rugby in other South American countries. Meanwhile the US and Canada have gone even more backwards. One step forward, ten steps back for them.

Tx guys. What happens in south Africa is the boys start playing when they're very young. 8 or 9 years. So they're small small when they start. My son was 10 and in one season he got a cracked nose and a concussion 😂 we don't fuck around when it comes to rugby😂

Even younger than that. 6-7 they start with basics of touch, and not just at school, but club rugby, yes, club rugby for 6-7 year olds, 1st year of primary school.

Argentina recently beat the South African under 20s…so not sure why SA claim they have the best talent and pathways to national team. Also, regarding SA schoolboys signing 5 times more contracts - erm…SA population 60mill+ vs NZL 5mill……so of course SA will sign more
