As a Yank who grew up watching NFL, playing soccer (football) and took up Rugby Union in Uni, it’s always interesting to hear an Aussie perspective on why they prefer AFL or League to rugby. Most Yanks who discover rugby (union, most league fans/players refer to rugby league as just league in my experience) seem as if they’ve had a religious experience and become life-long fans. I played with a guy here in the States who was from Dubbo, NSW, was on the Australian Schoolboys rugby team, played Super Rugby for Waratahs and had a cup of coffee with Ulster in Northern Ireland. He loved it so much here in the States he stayed and ended up playing for the USA. I know Germany’s rugby team has improved exponentially in recent years but there’s been some controversy associated with how they improved. I feel like rugby in Germany is very much like it is here in the US in that there are scattered clubs filled with converts and ex pats and they make up a very tightly knit and welcoming community. Glad to hear you were able to see a match and catch up with a mate!

A good one, Jacob. This time I focused on the game, not on the scenery. It was a nice way to introduce us to a game we may not be familiar with. The comradery you can experience in team sports can add one of the sweetest things possible to anyone’s life. All the guys shaking hands and sharing refreshments after the game…well, okay, Tony carrying out the beer was a highlight.

In my opinion: sports in America = all about competition sports in Europe = more about companionship
@PuntingForThePeople4 жыл бұрын
I think it also comes down sport in America being more of a lifestyle and less of a past time, so sometimes the competition and feud can boil over/off the field, where as in Europe it is more a work hard play hard atmosphere, it is more of an escape/enjoyment factor as to why they play ☺️ coming from an outside Australian looking in 😅
@AxT10074 жыл бұрын
It’s all the way round! The rugby players here in Argentina are not payed for playing, while in Europe they are in most of the countries. Playing rugby in Argentina is a very popular sport/hobby because of the values it gives you.

The British teach me: Football is a game for Gentleman played by Hooligans. Rudby is a game for Hooligans played by Gentleman. So as I have watched England vs the "all Blacks" just before your footage of the Dresden Kreisliga, it was quite a shock to see that difference. It even looks as they are playing different games.
@PuntingForThePeople4 жыл бұрын
Oh, when you get to that high a level everything is so much faster and natural, speaking to tony, a lot of the “hillbillies” are first or second year players still learning and adapting to the sport, so you can see the match being a little more wobbly but as time goes on they get better ☺️ Maybe team Deutschland can take on England eventually? 👀
@lotharschepers22404 жыл бұрын
@@PuntingForThePeople I hope England will not play Germany at Rudby soon because that would be a disaster for Germany. We never made it even to the RWC final Pool Groups, this time we were happy to get a second chance for Japan, but our team was not strong enuff to book the spot. So if we have to play a Rudby game let us first try Fiji. Even if they are stronger in that field than Germany is today. So Fiji vs Germany should end 60 to 7, but if we try England at their current level, we will lose with a three-digit difference.

It would be great if Germany could even arrange 'friendly' games against England, Wales etc. Of course, these teams would put out their 4th or 5th teams. Still, would be great experience for the Germans. They would be thrashed, though. If Germany somehow qualified for the next RU World Cup, that would be a great achievement, but the top nations, like South Africa, New Zealand and England would, I'm afraid, beat them by 100+ points.
@christianpayne2280 Жыл бұрын
Japan used to get thrashed like hundred odd nil but now thirty years on they're tenth in the world and have a bright future in the game imo. I would like to see a England vs Germany game though.
@carnalea2424 Жыл бұрын
@@christianpayne2280 I think one problem with union becoming big in Germany is that there are other 'physical' sports very popular with Germans. I'm thinking of Ametican Football and also handball and icehockey. These 3 sports get little coverage ( except the NFL) in the UK. So, unless a lot of money was invested in the game, is there really enough interest/is there room in Germany for union, or even league, to grow? But an England-Germany game in Twickenham or Berlin - if both teams were on roughly equal footing - would be fantastic.

Ok. We've got Rugby League and Rugby Union. What is Sevens then?
@PuntingForThePeople4 жыл бұрын
Rugby sevens is still Rugby Union, it has just been adapted to have less people on the field, creating more open field and a faster style of game, more exciting for the fans I assume ☺️
@Hans._A._Pils4 жыл бұрын
@@PuntingForThePeople furthermore the games are shorter. 2 times 14 min instead of 2 times 40 min
@chesterdonnelly12124 жыл бұрын
Sevens is a game that can be played at sports tournaments like the Olympic Games. The games are shorter so the players recover quicker. A tournament can be finished in a couple of days or even a single day. Rugby union fifteens takes a lot out of the players so they can only really play once a week, so the rugby world cup takes 2 months to complete.

How do I become a international rugby player in Germany if I’m from South Africa?

The one who comes to my mind is Etienne du Plessis who used to play for SC Frankfurt 1880 Rugby. He has been drafted from University of the Free State as far as I know. I guess the scouts scan any major rugby "center"...

Of course not but every failure is a chance to learn and improve, The All black seem invincible but even they have their bad days due to their lack of knowledge of a loss, and there’s something about the underdog that sets my competitive spirit on fire.

Why don't Germany have a rugby team? I'm Irish and we live in a tiny country and we're 4th best in the world
@schorschmcgill2 жыл бұрын
Because the only sport that gets major sponsorship and media attention here is football and winter sports. As a rugby player (and a non football player basically) it's extremely frustrating and depressing here. We will never be good at any other sport if we don't invest into the future.
@aino46892 жыл бұрын
Germany has a rugby team, but most of the money that goes into sports is put into football and considering how unpopular it is here in Germany it’s basically one of the last sports that get funding. I believe it might have gotten a bit better over the past few years though. Rugby sadly just doesn’t have a tradition here in Germany.
