All the red cards for foul play to the head were correct calls. Probably were controversial only a few years ago but we all know now no excuse for shots to the head. Should have been a law refs were instructed to follow through with decades ago, penalties would have improved rugby safety and standards ahead of other sports. It's staggering that punch ups even when rugby became professional excited the commentators more than the sport. Remember a certain SA coach responding to alleged eye gouge saying that 'it's not ballet'!!

I'm an amateur player and referee in RL. Maybe not the best person to throw my two cents in, and I'm from the other code, but I am anyway. 1) Referee monitoring scrum in a seemingly standard position, and moves back, appears normal. FRA player is blocked as the referee moves, should know. Does interfere with play, so should be restarted due to referee interference. 2 + 3) Shoulder direct to head, red card. No question. 4) Apparent knock on that was missed. Incorrect call on field, but not everything is caught. 5) Blue makes a move towards Red, and red falls holding face. Can't see contact as angle gives an insufficient view, but red's dive seems reminiscent of a football dive. Personally wouldn't give a card from shown evidence. 6) Open palm, glancing blow to the face by Black on Red. Yellow card. 7) Clearly incorrect call, well done to the BBC commentator for knowing the law, and the live feed producer for showing it on screen.

@Karma-qt4ji6 жыл бұрын
Gut reaction from Poite was that it was offsides and then he reverses his decision when he sees it on the big screen - any of you ever wonder why that would be if he didn't think he had gotten it wrong? Williams was being lifted by Stander and had Read jumped into him with zero chance of getting the ball (paraphrasing Jonathon Kaplan's assessment here); Williams landed on his face and was down injured but no one thinks to look at Read's actions? It should have been a penalty against Read and possibly a card, but the crowd would have crucified Poite had he done that, so he downsized it to an AB scrum. The BI Lions were robbed there, not the All Blacks. But if you want to have a look at Poite controversy, feel free to look at the time he carded Bismark du Plessis for a high no arms tackle on Dan Carter hahahaha.
@Karma-qt4ji6 жыл бұрын
Ross H I don't want to come across as argumentative, but that is such a standard and nonsensical response to the situation, especially for an All Black supporter (no accusation or assumption intended). The entire argument revolves around an alleged mistake made by the official, so it makes no sense to rely on their ruling that the contact was fair. As I mentioned in my comment, I was paraphrasing the words of Jonathon Kaplan, arguably one of the best referees of the professional era, in his article in The Telegraph. In his opinion, Read should have been penalised.
@Karma-qt4ji6 жыл бұрын
Ross H I didn't think you were an AB supporter because they seem to be a lot more vociferous on the topic, hence my "no accusation or assumption" statement. Your assessment of Kaplan is really harsh, mate. He clearly asked if it was the same ball, even voiced surprise with an ,"it is?" and then awarded the try. Given what he knew at the time - ball grounded and linesman confirmed throw in was legal - he had no option really. Remember, that was 2011 where the TMO involvement was limited; could he actually have referred this to the TMO? I don't know, I can't remember to be honest. As for the incident, I think we need to agree to disagree. I think Read should have been penalised based on how many of my team's players get penalised or worse for similar incidents. It seems like the fair thing to do, especially given World Rugby's drive to eradicate head injuries. If you don't agree with it then that's your prerogative and I respect that.

We watch for the same reasons others do. Remember virtually all referees are ex players, we arent an alien breed shipped in from another planet! And as for ego boost, if you want that dont go to refereeing, where you challenge yourself and question yourself all the time, as well as getting similar "encouragement" from some players and spectators. You can't bring intent into rules like this. Football has done it with the handball, and it leaves far too many grey areas that become referee's discretion. That's when officials start dictating games. In Ice Hockey the only real rule that focuses on intent is the "Intent to Injure" rule, and that is only ever enforced in black and white situations (such as a goaltender punching another player with their blocker still on). Every other rule is "I know it wasn't intentional, but too bad you still did it".

Bit of a clickbait vid as the majority of decisions were correct. Ref interference was terrible and the touch call was beyond the pale. Other than that pretty good job by the refs.

I don't get the title. There are two wrong decisions (the first and the last) and the rest is correct. Why controversial?

Totally agree. How are we suppose to have a debate now ?

I'm not taking anything away from Rugby but, American football is much more brutal.

Is that supposed to be a good thing the game is supposed to be about skill
@Scunsun6 жыл бұрын
Brutal? You guys have so many breaks in the game it's painful to watch. America has so much talent but such slim pickings for their Union teams, why? Scared.
@MackeyDeez6 жыл бұрын
@@Scunsun The way I see it the brutality of Rugby is less severe and more controlled because they don't wear protective gear. American football the brutality is also more controlled but more severe especially with the concussion epidemic that NFL doesn't like to talk about.
