Freeze frame at 2:21 -- Frans Steyn's kick is from about 2-3m beyond halfway and 6m in from the sideline; halfway is 50m and rugby field is 70m wide, hence if we use Pythagoras' equation we get SQRT((50+3)^2+(70/2-6)^2) = 60.4 meters, not the 66m that the commentators are claiming. [EDIT] In case anybody's interested, here's the formula for calculating the distance of a rugby kick: SQRT((50+A)^2+(35-B)^2) where A = the number of meters beyond halfway (subtract A if it's A meters inside the opposition's half) B = the number of meters in from the sideline. As a guide, the two dotted lines are 5m and 15m in, and the center of the field directly in front of the goalposts is 35m in. So you just plug the numbers A and B in, and type the equation into your web browser, and Mr Google (or Ms Bing) will give you the answer.

Paul Thorburn's kick was the best. It was done with a heavy leather ball and towards latter half of the game and as you say no tee. Most of the others are great too but one can push the synthetic lighter balls with tees a bit further and the kicks in the upper veldt certainly go further through the thin air too. All good kicks though

It seems to me that the longest kickers are all South Africans. The drop goal from 60 meters is from Riaan Viljoen. The penalty kick at goal from 66 meters is from Francois Steyn then he again kicks at goal from 62 meters. The other drop goal from 52 meters is from Morne Steyn. These are all South Africans.

I've often wondered why drop-goals aren't utilised more to the extent that the points would have to be reduced. Forwards celebrate a hard-won, kickable penalty but stand far enough back from a set-piece or in open play and a drop-goal is impossible to defend.

Place kicks off a holder are better for accuracy and travel at straighter angles, but Drop - kicks that hit off the ground go the highest and the furthest of all kicks because they get rikishay effects and they are taken by the wind more.

How are they measuring the Steyn one at 66metres when it's barely on the other side of the HW line on a "quite a small pitch" as the commentators describe it? Even with the angle it's nowhere near 66m. Verified longest kick is Bridlington High School XVs Ernie Cooper at 81 yards with a moderate side wind in 1944!
@callumscott9537 жыл бұрын
Actually it pretty close. It isn't quite right but it is close. The field may be small but for a professional match the field has to meet the World rugby standard size which is 100m by 70m with at least 10m in goal. The kick was about 53m out and was about 33m across on the angle (It was about 2m from touch meaning it was about 33m to the center). By Pythagoras you can calculate the distance to about 62.5m.
@ynotnilknarf397 жыл бұрын
It's supposed to be measured to the crossbar/try line (and they state the distance BEFORE he kicks it) not where it lands so it's nowhere near 66m.
@callumscott9537 жыл бұрын
That is the measurement to the try line. A straight line from where he kicks it to the center of the try line below the center of the cross bar is 62.5m. Simply calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. 53m from the place to the line and 33m from the place to the center of the field gives a hypotenuse of 62.5m which is the calculated distance.
@chriscooper3384 Жыл бұрын
Ernie Cooper is my dad and the 81yards was ‘only’ to the goal line - (the ball carried beyond the dead ball line) Was also for an unbeaten seasons last game draw so “I had no choice otherwise we would have lost the unbeaten record” Many have attempted non have equalled and nothing close in a competitive game with the pressure on.
@ynotnilknarf39 Жыл бұрын
@@chriscooper3384 Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's a hell of a kick in any circumstance, never mind the unbeaten season and the balls of those times, but those heavy boots might have had a positive influence. I've managed from halfway line when I was younger just knocking about and after many attempts, but was not a practised goal kicker nor played at any decent standard. I'm a RL man born down the road in Hull (lived darn Sarf for 35 years) Brid was always a place we went as kids so it was nice finding that that record was from localish to me. I don't want to demote your dads kick but I'm wondering on the 'moderate' regards wind speed, in the North that could be considered quite a gale by Southern Softie standards ;o) All the best to you and your dad plugging a few over the pearly gates no doubt!

some great kicks. This is why i never can understand how american football field goal kickers missed frequently enough from 30 and 40 yards out right in front of the posts. The phrase you "had one job" literally comes to mind!
@agnostic477 жыл бұрын
They miss because the ball is snapped back and a guy has to catch the ball and position it while the kicker runs up. In rugby the ball is set on a tee and isn't moving. And a dozen massive guys aren't charging you.

Very good compilation. As you mention, there will be lots more worthy kicks that should be included that do NOT include a kicking tee. I guarantee you that the bulk of those will be from South African teams in the High Veldt during the 70s and 80s. Would also expect the dropped goal from Kiwi No. 8 Zinzan Brooke to make an appearance. All thhe kicks on the video were taken by regular team kickers in the backs, but Brookes drop goal was totally instinctive and every regular kicker would have been proud of that. Another great inclusion would have been Aussie prop Matt Dunnings sweetest drop goal for the Waratahs in 2003. That one was a bit of an anti-climax though as it cost his team a place in the semi finals. I know your video is for biggest and longest.... but these would have been the biggest/longest (AND SWEETEST) from a Number 8 and a prop
