Bought a gen 2 American predator 6.5 cm about 3 weeks ago, got a vortex viper to go on it. Sighted it in at 100 yards, barely had to make adjustments. I usually shoot a 270 but have fallen in love with my 6.5 cm. Dropped 2 bucks this past weekend about 80 yards. Personally the kick is barely anything as well which I love! This video was very informative! Thank you sir!

As a lefty, I sling my rifle over my left shoulder. This causes the right-sided bolt to rub against my body when walking and I have to be wary of the bolt opening. For this reason, I think the 3-position safety in the Gen II rifle is a definite plus.

No magazine issues at all with my RA Predator in .308 (nor the RA Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor which I sold to my BIL.) Shot a really nice buck this year with that little 308 which is several ounces lighter but almost exactly the same length as my other woods gun, my Marlin 35 Rem. Can’t remember which rings I ended up with but my Nikon Monarch 3-9x40mm sits as low as possible to give me a decent cheek weld so zero issues with it. For the $ they’re wanting for the new one I’ll pass. Don’t think I’d want a spiral fluted barrel for one thing.

I would rate the original rap and the xpr as the xpr having a slight upper hand overall similar in build, fit and finish. But the trigger on the xpr is much better. Breaks like glass and the over travel is adjustable which it is not on the rap. Can't speak for the gen 2 rap personally. Seems to be a big improvement in fit and finish overall. I paid 350 for my rap 5 years ago and it now resides in a magpul hunter stock and I cerekoted it so it's a pretty neat package for the woods of northeast united states. Paid around 600 for my xpr last year and it's a nice slightly better than budget rifle that shoots, feeds, and looks great. If I had to choose between the rap and xpr, it would be a literal flip of the coin with a slight edge to the xpr because of the superior trigger.

There is a little over an inch of barrel hidden inside the receiver and barrel nut, so the barrel length actually is 20" and the muzzle brake isn't included in the overall length listed on the website. If you use a tape measurer to measure length it wouldn't be accurate because you are unable to see that extra inch. A Gen 2 20" barrel is the exact same length as a threaded 20" gen 1.

Both are extremely accurate and the stocks they came are entirely suitable for anyone that knows how to handle a rifle. I hunt or shoot with mine, year round and have never found even a slight issue to complain about where the stock is concerned. Ruger made a damn fine budget rifle that needed to be changed very little and at no additional expense. Mostly engineering and design flaws. The problem they are having now is taking the budget out of the budget class rifles. They need to get a proper length barrel, a good non gimmick trigger, get rid of the fluting and brake as well as the plastic parts and get them down to around 450 USD. Otherwise, they can just fugg right off.
@KatManDew93111 ай бұрын

@Strutingeagle11 ай бұрын
If I did I surely didn't mean to. There is too much plastic on that gun. Magazine, bolt shroud, and a gimmick trigger. Its stock would be ok if it were stiffer and the thin part along the barrel channel was thicker and a little more clearance. A stock more like the 7722 of the 2010 era except with a cheek piece and raise monte carlo stock. Of course have some wood stocks too for those that want them. A winchester model 70 of 1950s era style trigger that is easily adusted and very cheap to make would be nice. The main thing is keep that price low with all quality parts and good design with the shooter in mind.@@BoomStickTactical

@@Strutingeagleyour describing what you want. Most people want other things out of this rifle! The customers spoke and Ruger answered with the gen 2. Now watch em fly off the shelf! How do you figure that amazing trigger is a "gimmick" ?
@Strutingeagle11 ай бұрын
I mean gimmick from a marketing perspective. All gun manufacturers are hungry for market share, and they basically rode on the back of the savage rifle trigger success and the stock design was very similar. Ruger does use gimmick marketing fairly successfully but they over do it at the expense of the consumer. A classic example is the 1022 bx trigger. The bean counters said yes a better trigger is a good thing but make the buyers pay for the bad trigger then they will want to buy the bx trigger and we can afford to have one hellova Christmas party this year and make a shit ton of money to boot. I think you are right about them flying off the shelves for a minute because there are enough die hard fan boys that will want these. As cost goes up there becomes other options in the market people will consider. My point isn't that it is a bad gun, it is just getting away from its original purpose of being a good budget rifle option for those that can not afford the Hawkeye or don't like the Hawkeye. I am glad they got rid of the gimmick zipper texture on the bolt after all these years and I do like the safety on it now. Not a fan of the short threaded barrel or the fluting. That is added cost right there. It is possible to make a damn fine budget rifle that they can continue unchanged for decades but the fad/gimmick marketing seems to be the direction they are going. I get a kick out of the newer shooters reasoning and ramblings. They will study ballistics charts for hours to find the best cartridges and pick one because it is a hundred feet per second faster then buy a gun with a 16 or 18 inch barrel. They like the compactness of the gun then add a suppressor onto it making it much longer. Not everyone gives a flying fu(# about a loud bang when the shoot game and when they are target shooting they wear ear protection anyway. @@nateburns5933

I held one today at cabela’s to test the forend. Way stiffer than a lot of comparably priced options. Better than hogue, Mossberg, savage (non-accustock), bergara hunter. I was honestly surprised and thought this may have been runaway hype. They may have also just made more recent prodtions a bit stiffer without letting anyone know. It would probably call more negative attention to it than it’s worth to announce that if that was the case. All of my custom long action rifles have 24 or 26" barrels from #1 to #5 contour. Fortunately, I've been able to find a one hole handload with all but 1 and most of those are with Berger VLDs. I dismissed the relevance of short barrel harmonics 30 years ago.

So, here is my situation. I bought the old predator in .308. Decided to upgrade to the magpul stock. Heavy, but cool just range toy. But now I want to hunt. Not cool. So now I'm thinking of buying the gen 2 American (because the new predator color is still gross) in 6.5 Creedmoor. I would put the old .308 in the new stock with a new lighter scope and put the new 6.5 in the magpul with the oversized 34mm scope I have now. If you or anyone has knowledge that this would all fit it would be great. I'm pretty sure 308 and 6.5 would have same body and gen 1 vs 2 would be the same also, just not $700ish sure.
@chrisw59482 ай бұрын
Also it would be nice to put the the 30 MOA rail I bought for the 308 onto the 6.5. Guessing the holes will be the same but not sure. Don't need an extra 30 moa to hunt. Trial and error cost money, youtube comments are free.

The Ruger Hawkeye and gen 2 doesn't flop open either. Of course it and the model 70 and some other makes don't count because engineering has taken care of the problem which kind of highlights the deficiency of this gen 1 gun. The other thing to note with this issue is that I do not carry a round in the chamber anymore unless I am sitting on stand or carrying it in my hands because I am in a place where I am likely to see game and get a shot. I just don't pack em cocked and locked on my shoulder. When I did, I have had bolts flop open and lose the chambered round. @@wallacerose7499

Have you handled the stock or are you just going off word of mouth. I held one today because lots of people like to pile on to the hype and I wanted to see for myself. It felt plenty stiff and sturdy and there was very little barrel flex. I’ve seen far worse from hogue stocks, Mossberg, bergara’s hunter. Ruger Gen II (20 inch barrel WITH BRAKE), 300WinMag, true18" barrel (or 18.75) = USELESS - nothing but a hard kicking 308. Short barrels for the 7PRC, 270, 30-06, and 6.5PRC, all in the new Gen II line-up - USELESS. Why buy a new rifle that sports a short barrel that limits the true potential of the cartridge? Part of it is all the hype with adding a suppressor. If you just HAVE to have a limiting rifle with a short barrel, just stick with a 308, 7-08, 243, 260Rem, or 6 Creed or 6.5 Creed, 270 Titus.

@@BoomStickTactical Agreed but Ruger, unfortunately, lumped an entire line-up (thus far), where each gun does NOT have a specific purpose. Since your's is a 6.5 CM, a short action, the 18" barrel is fine. My complaint is the larger cartridges and their shackled velocities - totally hinders the cartridge design and intended purposes and velocities. Again, I can see a utility for a short action, non-mag in an 18" tube but that's it
