I also have a couple beautiful smith's but my ruger black hawk stainless and gp 100 stainless in 22lr and 357mag. Are very well made and just plain work. But to be fair I don't carry any of the smith's or rugers. I carry my taurus 856 or 605 or the 2 inch taurus 7 shot 357. All them them work every time and much cheaper for someone retired and starting to age!!!

Totally agree & half the fun is prowling around pawn shops & gun stores looking for good used ones. My last good find was a local shop that had two police trade in Model 64's....one standard for $500 & the other DOA which was oddly priced at only $250....so of course that one came home with me.

Whether their frames are cast or forged, Rugers have a reputation for being tough revolvers that can take some pretty stout loads. I have that .22; I need to clean it up and get to the range. Both the Redhawk and Blackhawk in .44 Mag are awesome revolvers. I prefer the Blackhawk, as the "Old West" style grip lets the gun rock up in your hand when you fire it, which eats up some of the recoil. Even so, after about 30 rounds I have had enough .44 fun. Thanks for the video; I learn something with each one you make. --Old Guy

My Wiley Clapp Edition 3'' SP101 ejected the rear sight after firing two boxes of .357 Magnum ammo (on an outdoor range, no hope of finding the rear sight in the sea of brass and steel cases)... after inspecting the revolver some more at home, I found the barrel to be under-rotated so the barrel/front sight are canted, and the front sight clearly was driven into place by a caveman, judging from the two scrape marks on the top, right side of the barrel where the front sight scraped the top of the barrel as it was being centered. I've sent the gun back to Ruger to be worked on, when it comes back I plan on adding shims and polishing the internals. I get the impression that, nowadays, you really buy two revolvers when you buy a Ruger revolver: the one you first get is going to be rough and needs work. Then there's the revolver you get after investing some time/effort/money. It sort of reminds me of the really early days of buying luxury automobiles like the early days of Rolls Royce, you bought the car, but you yourself were responsible for putting in leather seats, fine wood trim, etc. I'll be really honest, when I first picked up the Wiley Clapp 3'' SP101 (a $900 gun all said and told), I was pretty shaken in my faith in American manufacturing; I even cut my hand open when doing the Masad Ayoob stress reload for the first time with some empty brass because the SP101 comes from the factory in desperate need of dehorning and deburring. But I'm holding final judgement for after I change out the grips, add the trigger and hammer shims, and polish the internals. I'm going to look at this project sort of like working with a child, and we'll see what kind of revolver I end up with in the end. I hope it ends up being an heirloom piece.

I have a bunch of Ruger revolvers. My most favorite is a 3" Speed Six. I have a Security Six with 6" barrel. That gun has taken some hogs over years. For those times I am in the big bear states, I always carried the Redhawk with 5" barrel in 44 mag. I have a Super Blackhawk in 44 mag that started out life as a 4.62" barreled gun and I put a 7.5" barrel on it because I hated that squared off trigger guard on the longer barreled version. That gun is crazy accurate too. It too has taken many hogs. Alex Hamilton in San Antonio, a fantastic gunsmith of some fame back in the day of 1911 race guns, did a trigger job and deburring of my SP101 357mag 2.25" gun. I carry that gun from time to time to this day, in my workshop out back or when doing ranch chores. In double action that trigger is like butter. The single action is ridiculously sweet. I have a bunch more but those are my "favorites". I am a sucker for collecting the model 19 Smiths (all dash models), and that is just an affliction or addiction?

Thank you very much for this nice video. Ruger revolvers are known to be extremely strong. They are well built and very robust. Greg, a most exquisite presentation I confess that I had been something of a S&W snob back in the 80s to early 90s before it became apparent that the self loaders were ping to replace wheel guns in America’s police holsters. The general view of the day, even amount well known gun writers with law enforcement experience was that the S&W had a better action that could be further enhanced. Rugers not so much even though they were built heavier that the K-frames and could handle .357 Magnums on a more regular basis. Now I find myself occasionally thinking I should add a Security/Police Service/Speed Six to my inventory. The problem is that most of the shops anymore pricing them a lot higher than when they were new. But you’re right to recommend someone shopping for a wheelie to give the Rugers a look.

@@LionquestFitness I've never worked on a Ruger double action because you have to remove the hammer and trigger guard assembly separately, disassemble the latter and make your tweaks, reinsert everything, then see if it works. If you damage a part, good luck finding a suitable replacement. In theory a guy could make a good living building upgraded replacement hammer and trigger guard parts, but I suspect a drop-in trigger kit is not realistic. Ruger appears to have no interest in this either or I think we we would have seen highly tuned factory revolvers by now.

S&W is kinda high end but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and shootability. Taurus is historically garbage but in recent years gotten considerably better in QA/QC. It sounds like you’re benefiting from that. Ruger is somewhere in the middle being cruder but also more rugged. I own the SP 101 and agree the dated looking original grips are the best. I made the mistake of swapping out the originals with fancy boot grips and the results proved _horrible._ I bruised the palm of my hand firing.357 magnum. I’ve never bruised my palm doing _anything._ Not even firing my S&W 360PD which weighs half of what an SP101 does. Ruger pistols may make your grandchildren wonder if you were a Neanderthal when they inherit them. But they _will_ inherit them.
