In decades of shooting revolvers, semi autos and single shot handguns, the only revolver failures I've experienced or witnessed were with lead bullets. These were either swaged soft lead wadcutters, or some hard cast semi wadcutters. In the case of hard cast SWC handloaded for targets and silhouettes, a friend's 1970s model Dan Wesson revolver bound up after only a few shots. Those DW revolvers had detachable barrels and barrel shrouds, which gave the user the ability to minimize the gap between cylinder and forcing cone. My friend adjusted his revolver to minimal gap, which resulted in binding due to burned powder debris and lead. He never experienced that problem again after setting the gap more appropriately to accommodate those hand loads. In the case of the swaged soft lead wadcutters, midway into a box of 50 rounds my Ruger SP-101 cylinder began binding. I field stripped the revolver (easy with the Ruger) and found lead shavings and burned powder debris clogging between the cylinder and crane bearing surface. I never experienced that problem in the SP-101 with my hand loaded hard cast SWC. And there are hard cast full wadcutters that are beveled on both ends to reduce the problem with lead shavings as the bullet passes through the forcing cone. But I've never experienced any revolver failure when using jacketed bullets, whether factory loads or hand loads. And I carry only factory rounds for defense. Much as I enjoy semi autos and respect the advantages, I've seen and experienced far more failures with those pistols. Usually cycling failures due to magazines, cartridge/bullet lengths and shapes that don't suit the gun, failures to extract, etc. - all the familiar stuff we've all experienced. With age and arthritis I find it harder to rack the slide, especially with some striker fired pistols. I'll probably consider something like a revised S&W M&P Shield 9 EZ if they introduce a more compact version, or if they introduce a single stack .45 ACP version in the current slide and barrel length. But for a few years I've mostly carried snubby revolvers.

In use I'd prefer the round rubber speedloader. But carrying a speed loader in a pocket isn't great. So I think the speed strips would likely be my choice if I were dressed like that.

Another great video Greg! I love those speedloaders they are awesome!! Since I can't kick my legs anymore, I just use my electric wheelchair. It has so much torque its unbelievable. I once pushed a broken down van up a hill and the guy couldn't believe it. I've used my wheelchair to defend myself a couple of times and I never had to touch the gun. Well done video. I carry a j frame 80% of the time myself, Sometimes I can hardly tell I'm carrying. For me to conceal carry a gun it has to be lightweight, otherwise I'll end up leaving it at home to often. I really liked that speed strip that works like a speed loader.

I have been shooting revolvers since 84. I have seen one (1) catastrophic failure. That was with a brand new revolver it occurred during testing.

@Bro Mark a Smith and Wesson 64. The Smith that fixed the gun figured the gun shop owner tried to give it a trigger job in order to sell it. Much of my experience with revolvers came from police service. My acadamy class was thirty plus folks we fired thousands of rounds and no issues. I am befuddled by the stories of catastrophic failure.

I was shooting 158 grain 357 magnum loads out of my S&W 66-3. I had the cases lock up in the cylinder from the pressure. It took jamming the ejection rod onto the bench at the range to get them released. I’ve had them right before but never stuck. That being said when I carry this I will uses 38 +P loads. These have never been and issue.

Hi Gary! You get it. It's not the gun you would prefer to have, but the one you do have because of needing concealment. Better a gun, than no gun if you need one. Sometimes we think emotionally rather than tactically. Many years ago, two friends were shot after a suspect got the gun out of one of their holsters. Afterwards, one always carried a 1911. The problem was, it wasn't the lack of firepower that got them shot, but their arrest tactics and the lack of retention on a holster.

I have those same grips on my 442...the hks speedloaders work for me. Carry it in a split six safariland belt carrier. Although many years ago I noticed any speedloader can get gummed up and not release cartridges. So I also carry a speed strip, usually in a coin pocket or offhand pocket. Those zeta are new to me, will have to take a look. Thanks

Double railroad ties held in place with four 4X4 posts at each corner. Across the post in the front are 10X8 boards. Behind the berm I've been piling brush. Beyond that is three quarters of a mile of heavy brush along a creek bed.

Been a 1911 guy all my life but last decade age caught up and tried several revolvers-looking for Goldilocks. Speedstrips are easier to carry but it’s hard to beat reloading speed of Speed-Beez (push button locks/unlocks). Thanks for another interesting and informative video. What do you think of mid-range .38 wadcutters for lightweight j-frames. I carry them in my model 37 snub and find them very controllable, even in rapid fire. They penetrate about 19" in ballistic gell and cut a full caliber hole. I know this was a snubby load favored by some "old school" police snubby carriers.

Back in the eighties I had a Chief's Special I carried off duty. Based on the recommendations of Masaad Ayoob in one of his many books or articles (been a long time) that is what I carried in it. Currently I carry the Underwood, 158 grain semi wadcutter hollow points in my self defense guns for home defense and in my older S&W's. Bullet expansion depends on several factors including velocity. You do lose some velocity with a shorter barrel, so a wadcutter makes sense in terms of damage. Nineteen inches is past the recommendations by the FBI, but ballistic gel, as close as it gets, is still not flesh, bone and the elasticity of tissue.

I always know exactly when that thing goes bang which is not always the case with my Taurus Model 85. I still like my 85 but can now shoot my 442 a lot more accurately because of the trigger. Thank you for this interesting video. These speedloaders are made in a single piece and thus no part can break. I also guess that zetasix will extend its product line to other revolvers than the J-frames. I added a hogue monogrip to my personal 3" SP101 and it made handling and shooting a lot easier. The HKS speedloaders work well too. The key is to hold the revolver vertically, with the barrel down. But having other options is always interesting.

Very well articulated, since 1950 the S&W J frame 5 shot .38 is the counterpart of the 19th Century Remington .41 double derringer, Colt single shot derringer, or Sharps 4 shot pepperbox .22 rimfire. Paladin and Yancy Deringer would approve.

My two gun, model 36 snub combination I carried in the 80s and 90s allowed for a New York reload. I felt better with that than a speed loader or speed strip.

I have never seen you look so "spiffy" Greg !!! fantastic !!! :-) I own 12 semi auto pistols, many purchased because of all the anti-revolver-for-carry-talk over the years, but I have carried an LCR .38 for the past 3 years, and will likely never carry anything else again. I love my semi autos, but none of them fit my carry needs.. ccw should be what's most comfortable, what you shoot well, and most of all, what you can carry every (or most) days with you !!

Excellent video, as always. I also hate the original grips that came with my 442 and my 856. I replaced the S&W grips with the old style classic wood panels and immediately improved my accuracy. I'm looking for the same type of grip for my Taurus 856, but so far, to no avail. Hopefully Indiana will open up soon, and I'll be able to go to a gun show (which is where I found the Smith and Wesson grips). Question: Why the neck tornequet? Were you injured? 🙃

LOL - It is actually comfortable to dress like that. If you check on e-bay you can find some of the original Taurus grips for the 85. They'll fit the 856 and look really good on the blue/black version or on the matte steel version. They are also more ergonomic and fill the hand better than the original S&W J frame grips do on a Chief's Special.

It is an Azula holster. I have several of their holsters I like a lot, but the last one I ordered, which was for a two inch Model 10 did not fit right. I was told they would send me another, but that was months ago, and I haven't been able to get in touch with them since. So, their website is still up and taking orders, but I'm not sure of the status of the company.

@@colewestwood2906 Good question. The Azula, made from thick buffalo hide takes a break in period for comfort, but will probably last longer. The Rugged holsters are comfortable from the get go. The Azula is only made to carry OWB where as the Rugged can be carried OWB, Cross Draw, or Inside the Waistband. There are two extra straps I do not use since I mostly carry OWB. So a lot depends on what options you want and what gun you want to carry in the holster. My Taurus 605 and my Ruger SP101 ride in the Azula and the sleek, leopard like S&W 640 rides in the Rugged which was especially made for that gun.

You touch on something I have discovered with the new Taurus 856. We know that larer frame 6 shots are easier to reloadbwith a speedloader than the J frame 5 shots. I am finding that with the 6 shot 856 (just barely bigger than the 85 and J frames, that the 6 shot is easier for me to load, still. I am beginning to think it is the 6 vs 5 of the cylinders. Thoughts, Greg? (I use Safariland comp1s in the 5 shot, comp2s in the 6 shot. And the K frame Comp 2 is TIGHT to the frame of the 856 . But still a faster reload, for me.)

I think six is easier than five because of the geometry. However, the 856 is still a small framed revolver and I have to tilt the H&K 10 I use for that gun to get them in. With a K frame all I have to do is insert. If I push the rounds too far in, they get stuck between the wooden grips and the cylinder, which tends to happen if I am not careful with all my J frames.

@@LionquestFitness I would love to see someone with the Kimber K6S and a 5 shot snubby weigh in, also. I am defintely quicker with the 6 in the small frame, than the 5. I think your thought of the geometry is dead on.

Good information, in my opinion revolvers are the most reliable firearm out there other than single shots and double barrels, I always spin my cylinder to make sure that nothing hinders it from spinning before I holster my gun after loading it, never use ammo that you haven’t practiced with, I have seen some ammo that the primers bulged out when you fire them and they would hinder the cylinder from rotating, that’s only with lighter smaller caliber guns magnums usually flatten the primers out pretty good when they go off

zeta six indeed makes great speedloaders and speedstrips, which are sold on ebay at a decent price. i have found that wadcutters load sightly faster with speedstrips but ymmv. i am a committed revolver guy but i had a catastrophic failure once with a revolver: a ruger sp101 locked up solid at the range after only 20 rounds or so of decent brass lrn target ammo, which only proves that a black swan event can happen. issues with semiauto pistols are mostly solved with lots of practice and trials of different ammo. civilians lacking sufficient interest, opportunity or funds to hone a semiauto pistol are better served by sticking to a revolver. as for defending against a physically violent threat, at my own point in life, if it gets to two handed fisticuffs, i’m toast, which is why i ccw and avoid bad circumstances. strongly shouted warnings, back up, look for exit or cover, yes. if my left hand must go out to bodily fend off a danger-close bad guy my right hand simultaneously has a ccw. “god made man, samuel colt made men equal.” i am wondering if you have ever tried the naa mini revolver in one of its forms? even with aftermarket, larger, better grips mine is an always-on-me ccw when anything larger simply cannot work. cheers.

In retrospect though, that was a pretty good video. But, for safety reasons, you have a flat range and are shooting at least 5 yards. In practice, two hands on the gun makes sense. In reality that situation would probably involve close contact, one handed shooting, going side to side.

Sage advise as always Mr. Newton. Have skipped a hole on Bianchi speed strips when carrying a 5 shooter for years . ( I'm sure zeta makes a fine product or you wouldn't endorse them) Your shot placement is exemplary as usual placing rounds too close together causes less damage 3.2 inches Seems to be as close as you want the holes. And nice too see you implement some of your physical training into a firearms video. My problem with snubbies is loss of velocity but in reality it's not plesant to be shot with anything and they have put a stop to their share of problems. Stay healthy my friend none of us can shoot a virus.............

You made an interesting comment I'd never heard before and that concerns shooting too close causes less damage. It makes sense, but how does that play out in actual wound ballistics? That is something I want to research and pay attention to when catching snippets of autopsy reports and listening to the experience of hunters. Thank you for bringing that up.

When you said avoid junk anmo. Tula Ammo came to mind. Whether a semi pistol or a revolver is used. That Wolf Ammo garbage makes too much carbon all over your handgun. Even worse is that carbon build up has a bad smell. They say Wolf, Tula, and, Silver Bear ammo is corrosive. And can pit the metal on your handgun or rifle. Don't care if it's cheap anmo. I will never use that filthy Russian Wolf, Tula, and, Silver Bear ammo ever again. So far it's been 17 years of not using anything Russian. That junk stays on the store shelves. They say all Russian products are banned for import into the USA. As a loophole all components are shipped to Slovakia for assembly. Saying "Made in Slovakia" on each package. Just a loophole to get that crap past US Customs. Don't be fooled, Wolf, Tula, and, Silver Bear are Russian to the core.
