I have a Ruger SR1911 target in all 3 available calibers. The 10MM is my favorite of the 3 calibers. The 9mm and 10 mm have ramped barrels. The 45ACP does not have a ramped barrel. The 45 is a little finicky about bullet types with feeding whereas the 9mm and 10MM feed most anything. The 10MM is comparable to my Delta Elite for accuracy and shootability, albeit at a lower price point. Ruger hit a homerun with the SR1911. My favorite load for the 10MM is Alliant BE-86 and Hornady 180gr XTP running around 1150-1180 fps. Not a hot load, but accurate in my Delta Elite and SR1911.

Got a Colt Delta Elite eh? I'd prefer thar Ruger SR1911 Target 10mm Auto. I love the cartridge, I've a Glock 29, 20 and a Rock Island Armory M1911. That said I'd like to get that Ruger SR1911 Target 10mm, and a Beretta 92 9mm stainless with black grips and Controls like the SR1911 Target.

I’ve had two P89’s they are great guns for the money. I really want a Mark II 22/45 .22 LR. I don’t like the loaded chamber indicator on the Mark III or the tapered bolt ears on the Mark III’s and Mark IV’s I think the only major improvement over the Mark II is the button mag release, and the Mark II 22/45 has that too so it’s the perfect pistol to me.

The 10mm is making a comeback. There are a lot of new 10mm's out there. I purchased a RI 1911 mid size in 10mm and love it. What a great platform for the 10mm. The 1911 can handle it. My 1911 never needed a break in period. It has never had one issue. After 300 plus rounds it has been 100% reliable. 1911's are reliable if they are made well.

I've not had anything other than 10mm in last 15 years.. started with a Delta Elite and eventually went to a Glock 20 just because of the extra ammo capacity.. really love both pistols, but that round is just my all time favorite!

Most of the time, maybe. But it would've been better had they did a better job of making their SR-556 Takedown reliable instead of "cool". And frankly I don't get the point of the 8-shot Redhawk 357MAG. Sure the size of the 44MAG frame makes the 8rd cylinder possible just like the N-frame 327 TRR8, but the Ruger just looks and feels overly MASSIVE for the caliber. Overdone and gimmicky comes quickly to mind. And don't forget all of their lovely colored LC9s, LCPs, LCRs, etc., not to mention all of the endless 10/22 variants that under normal marketing should've never been made. But Ruger marketing and distributor deal-making? Yes, gimmicky does exist for Ruger as well.

I just got mine two weekends ago at a gun show for $739! Zero issues after 200 rounds in it's first outing! 100 rounds each of 1100 FPS 180 grain FMJ and 1350 FPS 165 grain Speer bonded HP +P! I love the way the gun looks and shoots! I put some black rubber grip tape on the grip front, so not only is it a more positive grip, but also looks good with the black rubber grips. This is my first 10mm. I have been looking at the Glock 20 and 29 for months, but even the short frame versions don't fit my hand right as the trigger guard digs into my strong hand knuckle. I know people grind the trigger guard down, but I don't want to have to make a mod like that just to make it comfortable to shoot! The Ruger SR1911 is as comfortable as can be right out of the box!

Father bought a Ruger 10mm. The 1911 armorer at the store said it needed a heavier spring. We shot some hotter loads with the factory spring and it did hang up. Replaced the spring and put a fiber optic front sight on it and called it a day. 100% reliable now.

When I bought my DW CBOB in 2007 it came with that kind of confused setup. A stainless gun with various blue parts and a carry gun with some match parts (extended mag release, same skeletonized trigger as this Ruger, etc.). I promptly replaced the match parts with carry ones (except the barrel, although tight chambers make no sense for defense) and the blue parts for stainless or in-the-white ones, and my gun now has a clean, classy, uniform look... which is exactly the direction that DW took soon after, noticing how much most of its customers hated the gaudy and cheap (MIM) stuff. Now if this is your thing, go for it. To each their own. I was just never into the two-tone or mix-and-match look myself, and positively hate that trigger whose design matches absolutely nothing else on a 1911.

Travis Pitt I have been reading and noticing a few things. Police forces are switching it out in some states and Manufactures like ruger are leaving it out of their line ups. Ruger American in .40 S&W?The cartridge is one of my favorites because it was the first centerfire pistol I ever bought so it will be special to me for that reason but I'm also a believer in the cartridge. The sad thing is they are blurring the lines with .40 and 10mm velocity I think to replace the .40 with something that can be equal in power if under utilized and then cost more for the same thing basically.

I recommend the installation of a Wilson Shock Buff in any 1911 that is being used with above saami spec ammunition. Softens recoil and prevents frame cracking due to the increased slide velocity imparted by higher pressure rounds. I am hoping that the Ruger SR1911 in 10mm holds up over time and firing, but unless they beefed up the receiver where the cracks normally form, it may not be worth the cost in the long run. I agree with your assumption regarding the full length guide rod, waste of space and if an after market item a waste of money. I installed the Detonics systems in Colt 1911s of various configuration back in the day and concluded that they are more hype than anything else. I suppose that if using one makes a guy sleep better at night, there may be some benefit!;) As far as I am concerned, I would like to accuracy test one of these out to 100 yards and determine if one would be a good addition to my own group. The 10mm is essentially a light .41 Magnum load, but it has a place in self defense just as the .41 Magnum does in hunting ... Thanks for a good video Mr. Hickok. p.s. For a grand, this thing better run sub 2 inch groups at 50 yards.

I thought maybe it was a magazine issue seemed like it happened to the same magazine twice during video. If I remember correctly he fired 3 mags of the hotter ammo. 2 malfunctioned holding open with one in mag..one worked fine. If it was his thumb it wouldn't have happened with only one Rd left in mag each time.

Josh, Ruger is known for good magazines, you could be right but both times I noticed his thumbs were riding high and the rounds were lined up on the ramp to chamber but the slide locked on starting to pick up the new round do to those pesky thumbs. I think the rounds would not have started to chamber if it were the magazine as the slide lock is pushed up by the magazine follower which was to low with the round still in the magazine. Just guessing its still the thumbs.

Lock and load, so enjoyed seeing more about a great round and the Ruger 1911. I walk silently in the deep woods, with camera, and this handgun on my hip. Always there if needed cuz I have seen Squatch three different times, 1974, 1978, 2012 and the last one, without a deer rifle, I have never been so scared. I sold my 40 and converted up, to a heavy hard round, reliable manufacturer, have a 22 Ruger I adore, a 38 SW, and now this wonderful Ruger 10 mm. I can take my pics, be one with the environ, and know that my 256 gr handload will work' if called upon. The 44 is not for me. Love your teaching and your experience. Thanks.

It would be interesting to know if those problems only occurred with one magazine. It might be a follower issue. With thinner rounds like the 10mm, there are more issues with the follower being able to hit the slide stop. It only happened with the hotter ammo, so maybe things are jumping around a little more under that recoil.

We will not stop fighting :) The last election played a big part. Pro-immigrant parties are now in the minority. Besides, if they came here, they would not have an easy life. We can defend ourselves. Also we are very pleased with President Trump's visit, we all have similar views. I have a feeling that by having such a strong ally we will defend ourselves against the wave of evil even faster.

Damn nice looking gun, though I wish it had the Series-80 type trigger safety. If I were to get a 10mm, I would probably go with an AMT Javilina. That 7" barrel and slide would be a bonus when it comes to accuracy, plus more muzzle velocity from the extra 2 inches.

Fun video. I enjoy Ruger products so often this is interesting. I have a 10 mm with laser and light Surefire on it with a Glock and that meets all my 10 mm needs but I admit this peaked my interest for the 1911 format. An interesting video. Alway good to start your day with a Hickok45 video.

I owned the Rock island 10mm and a Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm. Both 1911s had the very same premature slide lock issue will full power 10mm. I'm pretty sure it's one of two things, both having to do with recoil. Either my thumb was hitting the slide lock under recoil or the following round in the mag would pop up and hit the slide stop if the bullet had a wide nose profile. putting a small dimple in the face of the slide stop for the plunger to engage helped lock the slide stop down under recoil. you have to be careful not to make the dimple too deep or the mag spring wont have enough power to pop up the slide lock when the mag is empty. I think the primary reason is because the 10mm mags allow a little play, side to side, of the bullet nose. If the bullet nose happens to be twisted more towards the slide lock when it pops up, the nose of the bullet can actually touch the slide lock and knock it up when the magazine pops the rounds up after each shot. I was able to fix the premature slide lock on both my 1911 10mm by adding the small dimple for the plunger and reshaping and grinding back the magazine contact area of the slide stop. You have to be careful with this also as it is a fine line between bullets contacting the slide stop and the magazine spring follower not making contact with the slide stop. This is just an FYI. I think this is a 10mm 1911 problem, not a brand problem

Hey Hickok, good to talk to you again, but what do you think about 10mm as an actual house defense gun? I'm tore between the .45 and 10mm mainly because of the fish trial. Secondly ammo costs but mainly the thought that someone could say it was to over powered. Thanks man, keep up the good wokr

I had similar feeding issues in my SR1911 and found that the extractor tension was way too high. Some looking online revealed this to be a fairly common occurrence with the Rugers. Thankfully adjusting that seemed to take care of all the malfunctions.

If a 1911 has slide lock back problems , regardless of caliber, the problem typically is the nose of the bullet as it comes from the mag is tripping the slide lock knob on the inside of the frame. Normally this only happens on some bullet profiles. A little filing on the knob usually fixes the problem. Look for traces of copper on that knob and you’ll find where the bullet is touching as it’s chambered. This is a nice looking pistol and would be better yet if they didn’t have their name etched all over the slide !!!!!! Mikey

just with my experience, I've had three Ruger semi autos and all three had to be sent back to Ruger for repairs before I got 200 rounds through them. My Colt Delta Elite has been flawless right out of the box. I've got over 800 rounds through it. As for cost , my Colt cost only about $150 more bucks more . I do have a Ruger SP101 and I love it but their semi autos not so much.
