The compass on top of the Monkey Island is a standard magnetic compass. It is placed in this location because it is less effected by the vessels inherent magnetic interference. It is usually viewed from the pilothouse by a periscopic arrangement. Its open aspect also allows for clear all round view in order to take visual bearings using an azimuth ring. It used to be a standard magnetic compass was installed on all commercial vessels for many many years. and was used as primary Compas for checking the accuracy of the Steering Compas installed in the wheelhouse/pilothouse. believe or not we used to take compass error bearings each watch and enter the results in the compass log (eight times per day, every day). thus recording variation, deviation and total magnetic compass error. In the days when navigation was performed using a chronometer, sextant and magnetic compass; ie about 35 years ago before the advent of electronic nav systems.

While the magnetic compass on the monkey bridge used to use a periscope, it likely now uses a transmitting compass to a digital repeating head there on the bridge. Common way to digitize those old but reliable compasses. That vessel would be more limited by it's operator than it's design if doing a transoceanic crossing. It has fin stabilizers so will be pretty comfortable in all weather. Very nice yacht. Wish my bank account were a weeee bit larger. :-)

It kind of looks like that compass has a camera above it so it can be watched from inside, but it's outside to reduce the influence of the metal cabin.

Regards the Compass location: Usually located here to reduce electrical and magnetic interference experienced inside the vessel. They used to have a periscope viewer but these days have a digital sender to a small screen in the wheelhouse. Does cause a few complications when the Compass swing is conducted for survey purposes.

Why would you design and build a boat for 2500 nm range if it wasn't suitable for crossing oceans? You could accomplish "just crossing a sea" goals far more economically and with a lot more space. I think maybe she can cross oceans.

The cabin top compass is unique. This is the second one I have seen and the first was on a US Naval warship. A compass points north. Magnetic north that is. Steel effects the way a compass performs, rendering a false reading. Over the last 150 years or so seamen have become use to these false readings. While in fact a compass on a steel ship is off pointing to magnetic north by 32.4 degrees to the west. This error has been built into our marine charts, GPS and autopilots. The compass on the cabin top does not depend on magnetic fields, instead this compass detects particals of element 115 in our atmosphere. Element 115 aligns along the gravitational lines of the planet. A gravitron compass is accurate to .00023 of alignment. To navigate with a gravitron compass simply relocate your chart 49.10 degrees to your right, then the latatude and longitude lines will perfectly match the gravitational lines of the planet. I hope this helps you. Be happy, be safe

Huh....I thought it was a direct-reflecting compass with the bosun's balls mounted above the cabin where there is slightly less magnetic interference. The reflecting part comes from how the compass is read below in the pilot house, with the slight oddity that the skipper has to look up at the ceiling to read the compass.
@clifbradley

The compass is in the roof to not have the hull interfere with the magnetic readings is my guess. The ine that go on yachts like this that are immune to the effects are super expensive. My guess is that there is a reverse faced compass reader down at the helm. But I could be wrong

2:18 The odd thing about the compass is that it is on a steel roof and surrounded by steel with those big steel cylinders on either side of it. It can't possibly work. Maybe it is a keepsake. Although from the side view at 2:43 it looks like the compass could have an indicator inside the bridge above the helmsman. How can it work surrounded by steel though?
@patmonks3459
@patmonks3459 2 ай бұрын
Those steel boxes, I believe, replace what are called Kelvin Spheres. These are movable blocks of iron that are moved side to side while 'swinging the compass'. They are used to take out as much deviation as possible. After swinging the compass, a deviation table would be printed, and used while plotting courses. They've used that system since iron ships were first built.

@@patmonks3459 I do compass swings on aircraft and after looking it up I believe you are correct. I guess the wet compass on an aircraft must have the compensators inside the mechanism so we just don't see them. Thanks ! I don't really see how they work though. A magnetic compass will simply turn towards a magnet.......so any magnetic metal would become "North." Obviously it works though. I just don't understand it.

Even if it is collapsed it is still there... Can you explain the purpose of the mast? I doubt that it is for sailing and it just doesn't look suitable to lift any bigger load/boat/dingy (that is my opinion)? Would be nice to "get the point" and learn new things as we don't have those masts here except than on imports...

@@johanneslaxell6641 I suspect the mast and boom are strong enough to hoist and launch the dinghy, and it enables the masthead lights to be at a good height. It may also be possible to set a steadying sail.

Na.. should have had dual pitch controllable propellers wit dual engines and the appropriate halyards at the rear, more open deck space an dual cranes for the trawling net.. (and a big freezer) .. taking a boat away from it's intended design is always a 'crime'. The day of a pure luxury boat is quickly dwindling. Dual purpose should always be thought of.. as this design suits well for a tug and fisher.
