The most classic movie every Christmas in Norway is a Swedish cartoon about the son of a wealthy merchant who decides to steal a sack of post packages in his wealthy neighbourhood and share the loot out among the poor. He cannot lie to his mother, on christmas eve no less, and fesses up. His wrathful father takeshis communist spawn for a round of apologies in the neighbourhood - hilarity ensues. It is kalled *Karl Bertil Jönssons Julafton* - it's probably on youtube. It is only 20 minutes, and the music in the background is awesome

Non of that list are my favourite. The No 1 for me is Scrooge with Alister Simm. One very good one that I discovered a few years ago is a bank robbery film by Hammer called Cash On Demand (1961) that takes place on a snowy 23 December, where the pompous and aloof bank manager (Peter Cushing) who treats his staff with distain and contempt has a scrooge like epiphany brought on indirectly by the robber con man played by Andre Morrel. Although the robber is a crook he has more empathy for the staff than the manager. This gem is on KZbin for free if you want see something a bit different that has some edge of the seat suspense.

Directed by David Lean. I used to work part time as a projectionist at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon where we screened his films from time to time. Not exactly a Christmas film, but I think my favourite is Great Expectations. Next weekend I will travel by train between Bradford and Morecambe, passing through Carnforth where Brief Encounter was filmed. They show the film at the station, but it is not one of my favourites; really boring film.

I love the 2000 Grinch, the terrible aspects are what make it good to me. I still find it hilarious and maybe I still love it because I was 5 when it came out. That era of film was just fun (1995-2004). It was Carrey's film through and through. Underneath everything though it's a tragic film but also I think any of us who have ever felt outspoken or even marginalised in social settings, can relate to a character like the Grinch. Many people pretend to fit in but actually don't.

I had never even heard of "The Snowman" (born in the UK, but haven't lived there for 50 years). Looking it up, I assume the poll references would be to the British animated TV special, rather than to the 2017 feature film starring Michael Fassbender (which is apparently some sort of psychological mystery involving a scarf put on a snowman, or something). Personally, I'd pretty much always vote Labour if I still lived in the UK, and I'm quite positive about many of these films, but Love Actually might be my favourite.
