I'm not far behind you in age. It is interesting to me that even though I carried a semi-auto for nine years of my L.E. career as a police officer, when I got back into firearms after a twelve year absence, I gravitated to the Model 10 I first carried and other snub revolvers. I often analyze the reasons why, but I still find a revolver excellent for citizen self defense and carry. A five shot snub goes with you, where other guns don't.

Sounds like you picked up my idea! I normally carry a Sig P365 XL with 12+1 of 9mm but I decided to try learning what it’s like to carry a five shot snub nose revolver (a brief look into my channel will show I’m very interested in history and how things were done “back in the day.”) Among guys my age, it’s common to hose rounds into the A zone at 3 or 5 yards ASAFP but the snubbie requires far more discipline, prudence, mastery of shooting fundamentals, temperance, and deliberateness when choosing to pull the trigger. I called this mindset of solving the problem in four rounds or less “Revolver Mindset” or as you call it, “Rule of Four.” I also decided that after 3 years of living in TX, I needed a proper revolver so I went to the range and rented the 642 and Ruger LCR, and a separate trip to test the Ruger SP101 After two sessions of shooting with the 5-shot snubbies (and purchasing range ammo at exorbitant prices) I realized I mostly shot two pairs and always held on the 5th unless I was trying to dump all five quickly. Thus, that was my takeaway, “solve the problem in four rounds or less, to leave one in reserve.” I have now purchased a 3-inch Ruger SP101 Wiley Clapp edition as my first true revolver and will endeavor to carry it when I can. I still mostly roll around with the P365 XL but if I solve the problem in four rounds or less, that’ll leave 9 or more rounds in the mag, plenty (I figure) for most “street encounter” situations… in reserve! Lastly, shooting long, hard, DAO triggers, going back to my Glock 19 or P365 XL feels almost match grade and I walk around with this mentality of “solve it in four or less.” I also shot 6-shot revolvers with similar conclusions, but concluded that the six-shot cylinder was just a bit too much for CC, just a bit too thick for my taste so, 5-shot SP101 it is! 🎉
@LionquestFitness
@LionquestFitness 6 ай бұрын
Good sense and conclusions. Two things that seem to have been forgotten today are target acquisition and deliberation of fire. You know your target and what you are shooting at, and every round counts. Legally, people tend to forget you are responsible for every round fired. These things apply to any firearm. Thank you for helping me to articulate something I've been practicing for years.

Greg, a jewelry store owner (in California) pulled out his .38 snub nose to run off five guys. One of them had a sledge hammer, and I'm assuming the others were unarmed. They scampered, and the store owner never fired a shot. Good thing they didn't have 9mm's with extended magazines.

Good point. In a fight you probably ain't gonna have no idea how many you fired. That is the main reason I carry higher capacity pistols.
@anangryranger
@anangryranger 6 ай бұрын
Maintaining the round count becomes second nature if you train correctly. Three tours in Vietnam, and 28 years as a peace officer, with three shootings. I knew exactly the number of rounds fired when engaged in a fight. It's simply a matter of reputation in training to keep count of your rounds. Do something often enough it will be engrained into your mind and behavior. Concentrate and think while you're on the range. You'll walk away from a fight. Approach your training haphazardly and void of discipline, and your reaction in a fight will be the same. You'll likely be carried away from a fight. Learn to use your mind,while those around you are losing theirs.

@anangryranger So, you are telling me you were counting your rounds in Vietnam? Let's just be honest, I like revolvers, 1911's. I carry a Glock so, I don't count rounds. In a fight I will concentrate on winning not counting. I hate Math 😄
@anangryranger
@anangryranger 6 ай бұрын
@@UncleDanBand64 To each his own. I never trained to shoot my weapon until dry, then reload. If one wishes to spray rounds until the slide or bolt locks back, fine. I'm not built that way. Self discipline is a valuable asset.
@UncleDanBand64
@UncleDanBand64 6 ай бұрын
@anangryranger I hear you. I don't train to spray rounds until empty either. Only to shoot until I get the desired outcome. Still, I also don't buy into, let me save a few rounds or one round. If there is a threat or if I am hog hunting. Either way, I will fire until empty if need be and then reload. At my age my finger is faster than my sprinting. Not knocking your approach. Just saying I think a higher round count on board just makes more sense for me.

anatomically I would rather hit a bit high then low. Recently on Revolver Roundup channel he used a 5 snub, then ran picked up a 6-shooter....after the 5th shot with the six shooter he ejected after only 5 shots.....something to consider. IE when I use my 7-shooters I often run retreat after six...and then maybe re-engage with a headshot...if you got back and behind a engine block and they scattered or down good 7-shot there to protect a bit. 6 shooter...if 1 attacker train 3 and re-evaluate...on two...2x2 re-evaluate...on 3....2x2x2...however even if only one you are probably going to run that cylinder as fast as you can hammer and only realize you-'re empty after a couple of clicks.....physiology and adrenal dump is what it is... Of course NY reload is always a good plan after moving offline to cover too...

@@LionquestFitness it wouldn’t go back into battery, and the action wouldn’t lock back after the last round. It had been a while since I had cleaned it, so I cleaned it and will run it again later this week. There was a ton of junk in the spare magazine from just being in my pocket for a year, so I’m sure that had something to do with it. The magazine that I keep in the gun gave no issues except for the slide not locking back. I went through my carry ammo, and put new ammo in it, and the gun is clean. This Rule of Four seems sensible, to me. I have often read of, or watched, the oft-taught method of one round per bad guy, before any of them get seconds, (“boarding house rule”) but it always seemed sensible the consider the option to quickly burn-down the leader, rather than automatically serve one round to each. (Movement would be part of the equation, of course, if practicable; try to keep the two main threats lined-up with each other. 😉 )

To be fair most shootings are at such a close range it will not matter. There is a time to aim, and a time to just point the gun at the head and pull the trigger. I train with a punching bag, even though I have health issues. I cannot do a long dragged out fight, but I can get off a couple hard punches. Punch, shove, draw, shoot, no aiming. I do aim at 5 yards though, I train for aimed at 10 yards. After 10 yards I am looking at options to seek cover, or flee.

All fixed sight guns shoot a little different. It's a good argument to carry the same gun sll the time but that's a little boring (especially in light of your nice collection of snubbys) As to "the rule of four" I say carry two guns. I know I sound lime a broken record but a Ruger LCP in my left pocket makes me way more confident in the five shot snubby in my right. A stress reload with a five-shot snubby sounds unpleasant.

Good advice… although I like the idea of 15 rnds for the bad guys and 1 to cover my retreat/extrication😂 Thanks for sharing.

If you look at most shootings with multiple attackers after the first shot most of the attackers flee. In most cases they flee before even the first round is fired, criminals are more likely to get into a gun battle with police.

Respect for the opinion given in this video. My thoughts however differ on this open dialogue topic. Today, a 5-shot is NOT good enough for EDC. Carry at least a 6+1 semi auto or something. A 5-shot wheel gun is great as a “secondary” back-up gun, but that’s about it in today’s day and age. Just look at all the videos out there showing time after time after time of bad guys taking multiple hits before going down and from BIGGER calibers other than a measly .38 special out of a 2” snub nose. Why handicap yourself by giving the tactical advantage to a bad guy or MULTIPLE bad guys, before your defensive gunfight even gets started? There’s no excuse not to carry something that’s really no larger nor heavier than a 2” wheel gun, but yet holds 7, 8, 9 or even 10 rounds of better and EFFECTIVE modern 9mm loads? Sure if this was pre 1995, I’d say a 5-shot isn’t that bad to carry (with speedy-loaders). But in 2024 we have so many more better options to carry just as small as an old j-frame, but with better “fire power” (even though I hate that terminology) and with much faster reloading via magazine, vs. a speed loader or “speed strip.”

Yes and no. It depends on individual circumstances and the environment one lives. For police duty? No. However, most of the people shot who keep on coming are seen on police videos. In other words, persons who have decided for whatever reason they aren't going to be arrested and will fight until dead. That is not what most ordinary citizens will face. As well, many police officer lack target acquisition and deliberation of fire. Hence more rounds fired than what was needed to take the threat out. There are many reasons for carrying a five shot snub, but the primary one is that they tend to be easy to carry and go with you, whereas other guns stay at home. It also has a simpler battery of arms. And, you have to admit, if you have been around firearms much, many people never train with, or even carry their handguns. That includes people in the firearms industry. Now, if you live in a high crime area, or in a rural border area, it makes sense to carry more capacity. And as far as I am concerned, people should carry a handgun that goes with them and that they will carry on a regular basis, and be proficient with. Now me personally, and this is my opinion as you've shared yours. I train with modern striker fire pistols and shoot them well. In certain situations that is a choice. However, most times in my day to day interactions, I carry a five shot snub. It is convenient and concealable, I shoot them well, and it works well in close quarters where most citizen self defense situations occur. Above all, I practice civility and situational awareness. I don't go places where one could face trouble. I don't drink or use drugs. I also train physically and practice empty hand skills I integrate with firearms skills. I prepare to fight, so I don't have to fight. The "weak" .38 snub works well into my overall self defense preparation. Deadly force is always the absolute last step in self defense.

@@LionquestFitness I don’t know what you meant by “for police duty, no.” For a back-up gun, it the number 1 firearm we in Los Angeles carry for LE duty. Second, when someone always points out that cops are “horrible shots,” I then counter with “and you think civilians that don’t carry a gun for a living are any better?” Seriously??? If cops suck, the majority of “ordinary civilians” suck even more. Fact. Again, urban or rural areas, it doesn’t matter. A 5-shot snub is piss poor when there’s several alternatives with guns of the same size, yet they hold a few more rounds and are much quicker at reloading than a wheel gun.

Partner, I am a law enforcement veteran who also teaches criminal justice. I study police shootings. You have blinders on if you don't see the execrable level of police training these days. I also pointed out the lack of training and practice of most citizen defenders. My comment on revolvers and law enforcement means that a revolver is no longer suitable for police carry as the primary sidearm. Now, you just want to argue your point and belittle what I demonstrate for citizen self defense. There is no reason to get offended and you need to remember there is a difference in what situations military, police and citizen defenders deal with and the appropriate response.I've allowed you to express your opinion, but I am not going to allow any more back and forth. That wastes your time and my time.@@colt10mmsecurity68
