I think the Model 64 is a fine gun and you sure shoot it well but if I could only have one gun (in rule of law times) I'd be inclined to go with one of my .357 Magnums, just for wider ammo choices but then part of me wants to just go with a Glock 27 or 19 for the increased capacity and ease of reloading. With all the nutty stuff going on these days I've been carrying my Glock 27 with a spare 15 round Glock 22 magazine, just in case. That's probably just me watching too much cable news as I've always felt well armed in SC with a J-frame revolver. Anyhow, great video and I look forward to the "no rule of law" video.

Good points John. I'd considered my Glock 19, but you don't have the variety of ammo you can run through a nine like you have with a .38/.357. On the other hand, I also considered a newly acquired GP100 with a three inch barrel because of .357 capacity, but in the end I stayed with a perennial favorite.

Well sir, as a peace officer for 28 years, my primary weapon was a S&W mod 28 4". I was involved in three shootings with this weapon. It is no doubt the one that kept me above ground. Can't say the same about the ones who tried me. That said, the S&W Mod 28 in .357 mag is my number one weapon of choice. Here, in Texas, we're able to carry concealed or open. Either is fine with me. I'm not going to fuss. I am more than capable with this sidearm. It will be with me until I'm gone. Then my nephew will have it along with my other firearms. One shooting I was involved in was with two gangbusters that just knocked over a restaurant in my beat. I met both as they emerged the place on the sidewalk of the place. I put one round into each of them. Yes sir, the old 28 was my savior in this action. I was given this pistol as my savior by devine providence. No further comment is required.

I recently had a very long discussion this past week with a fellow I know regarding threat assessment and risk management and assessment. I spent the last 9 years of my 28yrs in the Army as a G3, J3 senior planner for major combatant commanders. Much of that work was futuristic in that we planned for scenarios 10, 20, 30 years into the future. (the crystal ball plans). My friend seemed to fixate on the most dangerous scenario at all times, regardless of how unlikely it might be. For example, I told him the most dangerous and least likely scenario might be a full on nuclear war, the classic MAD scenario. In that scenario I will say a prayer and prepare to meet the Lord. What I was trying to share with my friend was a solid threat assessment must have the intangible added to it and that is professional experience. Where you live, your travel habits, and age are three criteria that will cause your risk to increase or decrease, i.e., someone wanting to make you a crime statistic. Criminals usually go for soft targets, which is older, alone, isolated from view and other people. They prefer non-observant, oblivious people in poor physical shape. Most likely, they will be operating as a single, maybe with a second. We assume they are armed. Of the two, one is the Alpha and the other is the Beta. Considering the above scenario, the revolver could handle this scenario. If shot #1 is focused on the Alpha perp, Beta perp will try to leave. Most times, on the presentation of a firearm, both may flee. Criminals are not Audie Murphy types. Essentially, they are cowards, dangerous, but cowards. If your marksmanship skills are good carry what you like. If your skills are poor, hit the range and find a teacher. Yes, there are places, times of the day or night I will up the offering to a G19 and two spare mags, but for 90% of the time I am good with a revolver. (rule of law scenario). Stay frosty Grag and to all Patriots who see the channel, Merry Christmas.

Probably the best single gun would be a 12 gauge pump. The only [but MAJOR] problem with the Pump Shotgun is lack of conceal ability. I love and carry the N(625-45 ACP), K (66) and J (642) frame S&W's, and those are my favorite CCW weapons, even over a Glock 19. I'd want my single gun to be concealable, powerful enough to handle even a big animal, with an accurate flat-shooting range to rival a carbine. I'd have to pick a Single Action Army in 45 Colt with a 5.5 inch barrel. A relatively small compact frame for such a large caliber, 6-shot handgun, so fairly easy to conceal. The original 40 grain black powder load pushed a 255 grain bullet at 1000 fps, could shoot relatively flat to 120+ yards, and would kill anything in front of it. Modern progressive smokeless powders make it easy to achieve the same 1000 fps at the same low 14000 psi peak pressures of black powder, for a low pressure load that would not rupture your eardrums if fired in a small room. I'd probably opt for a Uberti replica as you can buy 3 or 4 Uberti's for the price of a Colt, and are getting practically the same gun. May have to slick and tune the Uberti a bit, and put in better springs, but at that point you have a gun practically as good or better than the Colt at a far lower price point. I've fired and seen others fire incredibly tight groups at 100 yards from bench rested Uberti Single Actions in 45 Colt, so can vouch for the high quality of Uberti barrels and quality of manufacture. The low parts count and very simple robust design of the Single Action make it about as bullet proof and reliable as any mechanical device can be. The 45 Colt cartridge at original ballistic performance is an absolute thumper, and achieves that thump without muss and fuss and bells and whistles, and with recoil easy to control by any experienced handgun shooter.
@Ed-ig7fj
@Ed-ig7fj Жыл бұрын
I have a few Cimarron SAAs (I believe they are made by Uberti) and they are very nice shooters right out of the box. My only caveat is that I was taught to never load the chamber under the hammer for general carrying, which makes the gun a 5 shot. In a firefight I'd load all six, but you don't want some random smack on the hammer to set off your holstered gun. I agree that the 45 Colt is a powerful round when you can find (or load) ammo to the original specs. Cowboy Action loads are anemic. The way that the gun rocks in your hand when you fire it eats up a lot of the recoil; it is quite comfortable to shoot. I would want a couple of these revolvers as I don't load them very fast, but you make a good argument for the old Single Action Army. --Old Guy
@63DW89A
@63DW89A Жыл бұрын
@@Ed-ig7fj My brother's 1872 Colt open top Uberti replica in 45 Colt has a thin enough firing pin to allow the firing pin to actually fit between cartridge rims for between-chamber safe carry of all 6 rounds like the cap and ball Colts. The fatter firing pin on the Single Action will not allow that with the large 45 Colt cartridge, but may work for a 357 Mag Single Action. In SIXGUNS, Elmer Keith described a holster he had made with a leather strip hammer thong with a hole for the firing pin that fit in between the frame and hammer, keeping the firing pin off the primer that allowed all 6 rounds to be safely carried. The strip kept the gun securely in the holster, and by thumbing the hammer back as the draw was started, the firing pin lifted out of the strap hole to release the gun from the retaining strip. I've never had anything like that myself, but it is an ingenious design as described by Elmer Keith! I like the 1872 Open top but we keep 45 Colt loads down to about 45 ACP level because I feel the open top frame is too weak for full power traditional 45 Colt loads. Even black powder loads we keep to 30 grains for around 850 fps with 220-230 gr bullet! We will push 200 gr lead hollow points to 950 fps, but that's as hot as we go with the 1872 Open Top. With the 5.5" Uberti Single Actions, we can push the 200 gr Lead Hollow Point to 1100+ fps and still stay around 14000 psi with our smokeless hand loads. That is an absolutely devastating self-defense anti-personnel load in 45 Colt! There are some really good progressive smokeless powders available now that generate decent velocities at low pressures, similar to real black powder.

If I had to boil down to just a few guns it would be a 357 handgun and lever rifle, 22 lr handgun and rifle, 12 gauge shotgun, and a 22 high powered air rifle. I would also have a good bow. Dad never carried, but his ice tongs were never far from him in the car, or truck. For me it would be a Ruger Single Seven in .327 Federal Magnum. 4 5/8". Stainless. A hot centerfire in a .22 frame. Carries like a .22, choots like a .38, hits like a .357. Finally, after all these decades, The Ideal Trail Gun. I also have a thousand cases for it, plus 1,400 .32 H&R Magnum cases. Tons of lead, a lifetime's worth of powder and primers. Sips powder, nibbles lead, chambers five different cartridges (2k+ rounds out of a pound of Red Dot and the like). My EDC around the ranch here, and does pretty well in town, too.

With rule of law it's my 4" GP100 357. It can be tough to conceal in some situations and weather, but most of the time it can be made to work. I just shoot it so we'll it's the obvious choice if I could only have one. It's a bit larger or heavier than your choice, but not much. Without rule of law is more difficult. Then the likelihood of needing many rounds is much higher. A pistol still has it's perks (always on you, discreet, lightweight, can shoot one handed). It would be tough to choose between a full size 9mm or my revolver. I suppose I'd still choose my 357. It's just hard not to choose the one you shoot best.

Greg, awesome choice and I can 100% respect your choice. I find it funny that the gun community has so many strongly opinionated folks that believe their subjective choice is the right one. Like you, due to my age and infatuation with wheel guns, I have had the opportunity to own many and shoot a wide range of revolvers. It is difficult to chose my "If You Could Only Have One Gun", I believe I would choose my Smith and Wesson Model 65 with 3" barrel. It just feels right and I always go back to shooting this revolver. My message to folks is respect what others like, and everyone needs to train and train to become as competent as possible with your choice. Again, THANK YOU for the amazing content in your videos.

@@LionquestFitness The .45 is always high on my list, but even though I spend a lot of time in the gym I find that racking the slide is difficult with these aging hands. Now, I tend towards my beloved P-38s or Berrettas as the safety on the slide gives me an "ear" to hook my index finger over and rack it with ease. If you started your career in Law Enforcement with a Model 10 as your service weapon, we must have taken The Oath around the same time/era. I raised my right hand for the first time in 1976 and was issued a Model 10 "pencil barrel "...There was a sad story behind that revolver that I only learned of two years later. Three or four officers had been issued "Bull Barrel" Model 10s and only two carried Model 15s (Think Camp Perry champions). I would probably go with a revolver chambered in .38/.357 if I could have only one handgun but that is just me.

I love guns, but if I could only have one handgun, it's easy. It would be a Ruger Mark 4 bull barrel .22LR. If I could have a .357, I'd choose a Ruger Security-Six. The S&W 64 is a nice-looking piece, but it has an exposed extractor rod that's easily damaged. I love the S&W 686 4-incher, though. If you get a chance to pick up a Henry AR-7, I recommend that rifle. It's one of the most underrated guns on the market. Every person I've showed mine to says they're going to get one, too. The Charter Arms version was junk. Garbage. But Henry fixed it.

The 49 is concealable, all steel, and reliable. It goes with you where others don't. It's a get off of me, extrication gun to fight off a criminal attack and get the citizen defender out of a bad situation. Not a bad choice.

If I could only have one handgun it probably be the ruger gp100 4 inch barrel chambered in .357 mag. That gun is so versatile as it can shoot light .38 all the way up to full power .357. That means it can serve as woods gun, home defense, urban or suburban defense. I am a revolver guy but do carry light pistols, G43, some of the time but if push came to shove my one gun would be something that can serve multiple roles.

If we are talking handguns (I presume you are) then my S&W Model 28/4" barrel would be the one to keep. My S&W Model 19 2.5" barrel would be a close runner up, but the 4" Model 28 is a better "all-around" choice. None of my autoloaders would even be considered. The revolver, and the .357 Magnum cartridge, are simply so versatile that there is little other choice to make.

Firepower is bullets hitting the enemy no matter what gun you are using. Even with qualified immunity, spraying and praying to the false gods of high capacity is not as efficient as one well placed fight stopping shot. Wyatt Earp's saying, "Fast is fine, accuracy is final, learn to slow down, but be in a hurry !" is still relevant today as in the 1920s.

A revolver was the first fun I ever fired, the first gun I ever owned, and in between, the only toy handguns guns I ever played with. I didn’t shoot a self loading pistol until the military. Still a revolver was the first handgun I was formally trained on when I started a LE career. I pretty much rely on self loaders today, but still have a few wheel guns. A K-frame S&W in .38 Special/.357;is a good all round gun. As you clarified “rule of law,” it’s currently easier to find .38 Special than it was during the chaos and hysteria of 2013, or 2020-2021. It’s still a lot easier to find 9mm. If or when SHTF, any gun in hand is going to be necessary, but having one in a hopefully available or common caliber will make all the difference as long as the user exercises good judgement and awareness. Great video! BTW, in my experience, as long as they were manufactured properly, HKS speed loaders are the most fool-proof of their type in my experience. They still tend to work even when full of lint, dust, or dirt.

Gotta love the harmonica music....a little blues, yeah! That is a very fine looking revolver (always liked Cochise) compared to a standard Model 10 and despite your having to have S&W fix it, most likely better quality. A recent new Model 10 I saw as not as finely crafted as some of the older pawn shop S&Ws I have seen lately. I do not have a K frame. However, instead I would gladly choose an L frame like the 4"586 if I had one or my 3" 686 plus which I do have....both in .357 Magnum so I could shoot .38 as well. Yes, I would prefer a 4" or better barrel for improved accuracy and round velocity in a bug out situation. Thank You and a Very Merry Christmas to you and your family Greg!

Always a pleasure to watch your videos. I took ammo sick and tired of capacity being the most important consideration in the choice of firearms. Here's one for the imaginary apocalypse dreamers. If you lose your magazine your semi-auto will become a paperweight. If you run your magazines empty, I can reload my revolvers cylinder a lot quicker. As for my choice it's either my S&W 642 or my 2 inch S&W model 10 -7, yes Joe Friday's gun. As for a lawless or bugout it would have to be my Ruger PC 9mm carbine or my 20 guage pump shotgun.
