Hey Jay new sub here! First I want to say thank you for the info! I found you looking for answers on cut duration or rhythm. I have a channel and zero background in film but I've managed to grow a channel to 23.3k. I'm looking to learn and I've sat and watched your whole Rule of six series as well as the l and J cuts and I've learned a lot. Do you have a video that teaches when to cut and average duration for KZbin channels that do tutorials? I understand most of this info is for film but I want to incorporate what I've learned from you. If you could watch one of my videos to get an idea of what I do and how you'd do it better it would mean the world to me. continued success and blessings my guy!

Golden rules! But important to keep those in mind when shooting. When you edit the footage it is usually too late to get right what you missed while shooting ;)
@JayLippman
@JayLippman 4 жыл бұрын
I agree! If I'm shooting my own footage I definitely keep this in mind. But thats why the director/editor relationship is so important when you're only an editor, which in the freelance world is what I am. The director needs to communicate his vision to the editor, and the editor needs to collaborate with the director to bring that vision to life.

You explained everything so clearly and validate a lot of things I’ve often pondered about. I’ve uploaded and deleted so many highly viewed (for my channel) or well loved videos bc I felt like they made no sense?? There was no flow, no storyline and so IMO, no point rly. I also think that on KZbin, unless you’re in the editing / videography sphere, for other niches ie like beauty / vlogging (this is mine) a lot of people seem to just mesh footage together?? I could never understand why I hated doing this on my channel lol. TLDR: having a storyline is paramount regardless of the content IMO. Thanks so much.

I am very Impressed with this series. I have not heard about these rules in any other videos and I’ve watched plenty. Truly academic and hugely applicable. Love the shower stabbing example, perfect! I’ve been doing many of these recommendations already after editing for thousands of hours but, hearing you explain each, exactly when to use them and all the whys and hows will improve my skills immensely. And the greatest lesson of all, protecting the emotional aspect of your video at all costs was obvious yet invisible to me. Mentioning music selection enhancing emotion would be wise as well! I really appreciate it J, I hope you come by and see my trailer sometime. I promise you’ll enjoy it!

Nice video. As a TV and independent editor for more years than I like to remember these rules come naturally to me but I had tolerant them. This I did as an assistant editor for many years at ITN and Southern TV watching editors as I worked with them on drama, documentaries and news programmes. I would add one more rule though if you want to tell a story it does need a beginning, middle and end to tell a story which so many KZbin programmes do not. Looking forward to more from your channel Jay especially as I have over the last couple of weeks become a complete convert to Resolve.

Jay Lippman Yes there are many You Tubbers who are excellent at camera work and do a production that makes no sense by just taking a series of shots on gimbals etc. and adding music. They forget all videos we produce are mainly to entertain and or educate but I often think they believe the gadgets and the shots they produce are more important than if the end production tells a story. One of the You Tubbers who is a professional cameraman said that the gimbal shots were far more important than the story. Needless to say I left a comment about how wrong he was. We are so lucky to have a platform to show our work on so lets use it to tell our stories.

I'm a totally fresh KZbinr and I must say that your series of Rule of Six is one of the best I watched on KZbin. Making better videos makes so much sense. As I'm as fresh as it gets I'm really struggling to make my tutorials, well look and feel good :) I do admit I ended up focusing on all those less important things. How to grade, how to record audio, what camera, what light etc 😅 For typical tutorial material would you still recommend the 4-6s rule? Any solid advice on how to do good punch-ins? I feel I mostly do it between sentences, but after watching your series, I feel I should prob cut on a word rather than between. Spent the last 20h binging your content. So much amazing stuff. Thank you for what you create and share 💛
@JayLippman
@JayLippman 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! To answer your questions: 1. Typically I would still stick with the 4-6s rule for tutorials, although if your tutorials include screen recordings, those can be forgiven if they are longer than that. 2. A general rule of thumb for punch ins is to use them to either bring attention to something important or to hide a cut. As far as where to punch in, it's kind of dealer's choice, but I like punching in at the beginning of the word or on hard syllable of a word. Another way to do it is to punch in on an action. For example, if I reach out towards the camera for some reason, I might punch in right at the end of the movement. Hope that helps!
