Rule of Thirds 🌿 Foundations in Aquascaping 🌿Elements of Design
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Although hardware, plants and fish are what we first think about when we consider our aquariums. Layout design is what transforms a simple aquatic garden in to an aquascape. There are elements and principles of design which, if followed, will elevate your aqaurium and draw the eye to see a piece of living art rather than just a collection of plants.

Excellent demonstration for those of us who are still trying to figure out how to aquascape. After watching several good videos on the topic I finally feel like I'm ready to attempt my first planned layout rather than the usual haphazard placement of plants and hardscape I typically use. Well done.

It is indeed! However that was not the word I was trying to say... the word I was trying to say was, in fact, not actually a word. I was mistakenly attempting to use a latin plural for "intersection"... but such a word doesn't exist (at least not in the form I was attempting ) 😂

Rightfully I should have called it the principles of design. Which are more related to balance, proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast and space. Whereas the Elements of design are more related to line, shape, colour, texture etc.

As an artist, I would never make the negitive space or valley between the moutians be dead set middle. It would be off set just a bit. If it's dead set in the middle, it is literally dead or boring to the eye. Off set is always better. Even with pictures being hung on the wall. The most intresting ones are typically the ones that are off set. Closer one to the 3rd lines. Sort of like the negitive space between the rocks there towards the end. It's closer to the 3rd line to the left.

Oh agreed...these were the most basic principles to get folks started...there are many more nuances to consider as one progresses..but this video was just to get people, with little to no design background, into thinking about 3rds, asymmetry and balance.

Some good places to order in Ontario are from aquascaperoom, 520 buce... i order from outside the province as well from SKA shrimp and nature aquariums. For information on plants check out the Tropica database as well as FlowGrow database.

I have a brand new 350 mm cube sitting right nest to my computer. I started to play with some rocks and already changed my mind based on your talk. On the depth side can the hardscape be at the 2/3 mark or right at the back. I was going to build a rock wall at the front but that may not be so good. Still as soon at the water test is over and I put some soil in I will be able to see things better.

+Robert Fletcher Great! Glad i was able to help you see in a different light. If you look at almost any famous paintings or photographs...they all follow the rule of thirds to some extent
@SininStyle
@SininStyle 7 жыл бұрын
can you balance 2 equally sized pieces of driftwood located on each side of the tank on thirds by having larger plants on one side compared to smaller on the other? not so much concave but low growing anubis and crypts to the left and val and sword to the right for example. Guess my question is can you remove the symmetry of the wood by off balancing the planting?
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991 7 жыл бұрын
+SininStyle For sure you can use plants to offset the symmetry. In that case i would recommend hiding or masking the wood as well as using different planting volume in each side...i would also offset that symmetry with angles (next video hahaha)

Thanks :)
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991 7 жыл бұрын
SininStyle i think you might be better suited to use the val and sword in the background and to attach the anubius to the driftwwod and plant crypts around the bottom on each side. using moss on the driftwood will also help break up the symmetry of the wood.....as would different rock piles under and around the wood
@SininStyle
@SininStyle 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Val and sword were just examples to give context. It is a 30g breeder so the sword would be to big and not a fan of val walls. I was tempted with rocks to go with them but felt short plants in the same location looked better. Don't really have a plant list just yet still working that out. Shopping latin names would be better of in sand script, at least then I would have pictures in the word lol. So learning as I go.

+SininStyle Hahaha...then latin can be daunting at first for sure...but once you start learning them you feel extra smart..hahaha But again it is all about doing it how you want...your tank...your vision...guidelines like i offer help make your choices successful but ultimately it is your creation....have fun with it

Does the rule of thirds apply to 2d only or can it also factor in perspective?
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991 5 жыл бұрын
It absolutely can factor into perspective. It wont necessarily help create the perspective but it will allow you to find pleasing transition points as you move "deeper" into the scape.

Sorry. I don't get 13:48. The hardscape coming down on two sides can make balance? Don't they look the same?

The portion where i was drawing it out?
@MuhammadIchsan21
@MuhammadIchsan21 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. The portion of the two cliffs looks the same to me. If they're the same, where's the balance? Isn't it the same with the earlier two-similar-rock example?
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991 6 жыл бұрын
In the case of the drawing it was a general shape that would include plant mass etc. In that case, the weight of the competing sides would be also considering the plant textures

Iwagumi means rocks only
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991
@n.o.a.h.-northernontarioaq7991 6 ай бұрын
No. Takeshi Amano, the one who developed Iwagumi as a style used plants in them. An Iwagumi uses rocks as the FOCAL point but it is not "rocks only".
