Loved this Ralphy. I’m a whisky drinker and wasn’t keen on rum at all. Married to a Jamaican so you can imagine how that goes down with the in-laws. But your channel has helped me get on to rum. And now I do love it as a change and can quite happily drink it with friends and family. So thank you.

I've been a Rummy rascal since my Army days back in the early 80's.Pussers Admiralty strength was standard in the mess. My rum collection has built up since then.Doorlys 12+14 are superb.I love Appleton 18+21.Eldorado has upped it's game since they dropped/lowered the sugar content.Hampden is a glorious funky Jamaican tot. And of course Pussers Gunoowder proof and the new 15 year old are still favourites !! Up spirits Ralfy.👍🥃

For rum, the rules governing the age statements are not as uniform or stringent as for Sctottsh whisky. The age does not necessarily rewfer to the youngest in the blend; it CAN be the oldest one or even an average age. Also, as whisky lovers know, barrel influence of one year in a barrel in the Carribbean is not the same as one year in Scotland.

Next I went to Foursquare and literally anything bottled above 48% is wonderful. Go for the Doorly’s 14 it’s great. Thanks Ralfy! I’ll keep exploring.

Very interesting video as always. The Rum Fire from Hampden is also a gem. It is a huge hogo bomb like most Hapden offerings. It is definitely in a similar neighborhood as the Rivers Royale Grenadian Rum and is simply delightful. It is somewhat similar to Wray and Nephew Overproof but different on the nose. Highly recommend trying it sometime in the future. Not sure how common agricoles are in your travels but, Duquesne Blanc and Neisson are two of the best blanc agricoles out there. Great video!

I have had and still own an old bottling of Barbancourt 8 yr old I received as a gift from a Haitian client from my work and I bought the colorful 15. I must say the 8 is more unique, very earthy. The 15 reminds me somewhat of El Dorado 15 but not as sweet and has a touch of bitterness perhaps from the oak. I’ve also accumulated a bunch of bottles of Cuban rum from friends that have brought them back from the island after their travels. Ranging from the white 3 yr old and 8 yr to regional special releases. I’ve opened only a few. I also have an old Brugal siglo de oró reserve centenario 1888 in a blue ceramic bottle my dad gave me years ago as a gift. Can’t find much info on that one. Regardless of the type I find myself going through the rum bottles very slowly and other than gifted bottles I don’t plan on buying any in the future.

Not all age statements in rum are to the whisky standard. Those who for example claim to be 23 year old for example zapaca, will just claim it because the solera vat has -some- 23yo old in it. The youngest rum in the mix is probably much much less old.
@robfut995411 ай бұрын
@@ahpadt you’re correct, I’m aware. But I’ve been able to find true aged rums that disclose luckily
@DatsWhatHeSaid11 ай бұрын
@@ahpadt Yeah, there's a LOT of true age statement r(h)ums out there, aswell. And Solera doesn't always mean crap, aswell - just as a NAS single malt (with e.g. a little 20+y/o casks blended with 6, 10, and 15y/o casks of the same single malt) can be nicely rounded and isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Start with something like Diplomatico's Reserva Exclusiva, a blend of copper pot still rums that have been aged in oak barrels for 12 long years. It has a beautiful sweet nose, notes of fruit cake, vanilla ice cream, cocoa, toffee and sweet spices for £34.99. Rums like whiskey, some can blow your socks off, some are overly sweet, some dry and spicy and some a bit harsh, but it's all about try, try and try again until you find your level.
