An easy to play, super-cool classic. Hard to believe this came out in 1958. Find the free tab/music here as well as the backing track I play over at the start of the video: www.anyonecanplayguitar.co.uk/...

It's refreshing to see someone use proper musical instruction.....counting rhythm's, time signatures, identifying notes and cord names. My guitar teacher had me read notation from a drum book for 9 months to learn how to count rhythm and play "in-time". It was boring as hell for a teenager who just wanted to play Metallica. But after nine months of counting/playing whole/half/quarter eighth/sixteenth notes and triplets in all kinds of time signatures, to a metronome, my timing was solid as a rock. Best nine months of instruction I had on the guitar and it's lasted a lifetime (thanks John Pramious).

Yep, that's where I fucked up as a teenager. Just went straight for snazzy pentatonic improvisations with no rhythmic solidity whatsoever. I've been catching up ever since.

would be pointless tbh,dude was probs trained decades ago,he practiced hard but practicing smart is better,now you have unlimited youtube vids,guitar pro and all sorts of stuff online,sweating playing 8 hours a day was always overkill,informative modern stuff will reduce the learning time easily. @@Drunkmasamune

@@Drunkmasamune (a little late but) Yes, I found it in an old pile of my instruction books from the 80s. It's called Modern Reading Text in 4/4 by Louis Bellson and Gil Breines (Belwin Mills Publishing Corp) Looking at it now, I see it's for all instruments but my teacher focused on syncopation studies much like a drummer would play for keeping time. I'm sure it's long since been out of print but any drum book with charts and a bass clef staff would accomplish the job of learning how to count in time. It's funny reading the hand written notes my teacher made throughout the book. Thanks again John, Rest in Peace.

You're momma singing gospel is harder than any of the lame auto tuned nonsense we get today. This was 11 years before I was born , and didn't hear it until I was well into my 20's. The bass really gives the vibe of this.

It was banned from radio at the time because "Rumble" was a term for a gang fight. An instrumental that was banned lol.
@boomerdell

Although there never is really one true "first" song in any movement or genre, this one comes pretty darn close to being a truly seminal song that jump-started a whole new world of rock music. And it holds the distinction of being the only instrumental song ever to have been banned in the U.S. (At the time, "rumble" was a word for a street fight between gangs, so the provocative title was the main cause of the bans, and the sinister sound of distorted music -- almost never used before then -- didn't help its cause.) Great lesson, as always, Adrian! Such an amazing teacher. Love your stuff.

I love the way you present this song. I bought the record back in the 50's and still have it and while I'm very new to the guitar I have learned to play this song, not super well but I;m still learning. This song has to be one of the fathers of heavy metal. To me it was well ahead of it's time but I loved then and still do. Again your lesson on this song was excellent.

Im 75 now and bought "Rumble" in 58 when i was 14,we went mad over it in school along with many other U.S.A. Billboard hits,all classics now and oh so glad i was around at the advent of R/R.and in no way would want to be 10yrs younger as would have missed out on that special era in music.

Now learning how to change chord quicker and more smoothly......then on to timing and then finally that manic bit lol you are the best teacher I've come across on KZbin thank you so much for taking the time to share some of your knowledge..... you cock man !

Using this tutorial as a guide to wrap my head around the guitar in general... been playing keys for about 10 years but never touched a stringed instrument before. This is a brilliant tutorial. It's very clear and easy to follow. Very useful to both novice and intermediate level players. It clearly covers the music theory the song is based on without being overly technical. The nuances of the recording are well covered too. Very very accurate too. Thanks for posting!

An oldie but a goodie, Adrian. Both the song and your lesson, that is. Since trying to learn Rumble as a beginning student (still at it, four years later!) I've accumulated Rumble instruction lessons from a number of different online teachers and probably bear the dubious distinction now of being somewhat of a connoisseur of Rumble study aides. Ha! From a technical standpoint, I thank your lesson is the best I've found with the greatest attention to detail and step-by-step analysis of the song. Thank you! You're one of my favorite online guitar instructors, again with the dubious distinction of my having subscribed to most!
