I always saw Roy saving Decker as a sign of empathy. Replicates are said to not have empathy, but it could be that due to their 4 year life span, they don't live long enough to develop empathy. The only thing that separates humans from replicates and only way for a human to tell them apart. So in the end, Roy becomes human.

I just watched it for the first time. The impression I got from Roy saving Deckard was that he was toying with deckard so he would understand the fear and hate he experienced his whole life and then he saves deckard, in part to show that he is not like deckard, like he is better, and so that deckard can live with that new understanding of how the replicants feel.

Wow. I am simply amazed. I've seen Blade Runner a few times (I even own the final cut) and yet the film as a whole has been something of an enigma. I always understood it to be a deep film but until I watched your rumination analysis I never understood it. It seems so obvious now once someone opens the door. Thanks for opening my eyes!

It's an extraordinary film for sure. Loneliness, personhood, the threat of globalization... lots of challenging themes for a two-hour film to tackle, but Blade Runner sure does it, and successfully too, imo. It's a film that encourages critical thinking, as does your analysis, Señor Lore. (This was a wonderful introduction to your show.)

I believe Roy spares Deckard as it echoes back to the turtle question posed to Leon, and the idea that replicants lack empathy. Roy sees the turtle on it's back (Deckard holding on for dear life), and understands his situation, so he helps him up.

Thank you so much for doing my request, so early after the features were renewed too! I really appreciated hearing your thoughts on the movie and I agree with everything that you said. Some aspects had escaped me completely even, including the new theme that you brought up at the end of the rumination as well as some of the animal motifs. As for the Deckard being a human or a replicant debate, I stand firmly behind the fact that he's human regardless of what Ridley Scott has said. First off he's human in the book, that and the unicorn scene was added in subsequent versions. I also think the narrative and the movie's themes work much better if he's human. It's important to show how in some aspects humans and replicants are really similar to each other, and yes, even their capacity for empathy (at least by the end of their lifespan), and if Deckard was a replicant then we wouldn't have the dichotomy represented on a personal level. Also Harrison Ford himself has said that him being human helps us put ourselves in his shoes more easily as an audience and I agree with that.
@TheSwiatu7 жыл бұрын
Your final interpretation is exactly how I see the movie, too. The improvised "like tears in rain" really sums up the entire movie. The point about Decard being replicant or not is not as interesting, mainly because it would not change anything either way. That] itself is more fun than the "real" answer.

Great analysis once again. Your theory of the main theme of the film was interesting. I think the main theme is death of a human/replicant life and the understanding how the length of that life (particularly with the replicants as their life expectancy is very short) does not necessarily has anything to do with how good that life is. In other words, even short life can be significant, important, and glorious, full of meaning. Perhaps I have ended up to think this as the main theme because many years ago I knew a person with an innate heart disease. Since his childhood his parents were always told how he is going to live only few years. His lips were blue because his heart didn't work properly, but he lived quite full life despite of the fact he died when he was 27 years old. I was also at his funeral. Never seen so much young people in a funeral. He had a lot of friends and close ones and he did a lot of things, perhaps much more than people who have much more time during their life. So this is what I saw on Blade Runner when Gaff said "It's too bad she won't live, but then again who does?". In my interpretation all the things Deckard experienced during the film lead this to point to accept the fact Rachael's is going to die, and eventually Deckard himself will die. Like you said, Deckard seem quite desperate and sad figure during the film, but in my opinion he gets that burden away here at the end. It is kind of a beautiful paradox: he has found meaning of life by realizing how short and fragile it actually is. And he is ready to embrace it together with Rachael, no matter long it will last.

Best and most entertaining analysis of the film I have ever heard. In the end on the roof top there is a moment where Roy is standing next to a windmill. It is one of man oldest and most primitive of man's technologies. Roy is the highest expression of technology. Where has this development led us? Is there hope for mankind?. I think there is. Roy shows compassion for Deckard by saving him from falling. He then accepts his own death and delivers a soliloguy that it sounds like it could have come right out of Shakespear. He releases the white pidgeon that wings its way up to the one small patch of sunlight that dimly shines through the grey clouds and we know that he is the one person in the movie who does have a soul. In the beginning he did not come to earth to be human, who would he see to want to emulate, but simply to survive at any cost. In the end he is probably is the most human of the characters.
@garyburley22835 жыл бұрын
your description of Tyrell being off human is spot on, in the concept stage of this film, the concept artist, syd mead drew tyrells cryogenic stasis chamber and Ridley Scott didn't have enough money to film it, and the scene went something like this in the books, etc etc. Roy murders Tyrell and finds upon doing so that Tyrell is a replicant, Roy then finds the secret stairwell that lowers into his chamber and ascends up into the cryogenic room and murders the real Eldon Tyrell. its a fact of production that is out there in the many books and in some of the documentaries also there is the very real concept picture of the cryo chamber by the then employed Syd Mead for the movie

“It’s a shame she won’t live...but then again who does?” My favorite and most encapsulating line of the story. Love your final point as it isn’t usually discussed, and often the line is associated with Deckard being a replicant. I love the original cut for that very reason. The monologues honestly don’t detract from the scene or the atmosphere, and the Deckard/replicant question is far more ambiguous. The original cut largely depicts how life has or never will truly lived up to the ideal that we like to ascribe to it. The cityscape and characters depict the loss of the individual through the loss of the ideal. That is, until the very end when Roy, acting through his own ideals, not the ones programmed into him, decides to save Deckard. And then Deckard decides to make his own decision, disregarding years of good will and service with the city for the woman he loves. It is about the power of a single decision despite the power of the collective. At least that’s my interpretation.

Phillip Dick wrote a lot about what is real, questioning what was genuine and what was perceived. Ridley went another path to get to the same spot. What is human (real) and what is perceived? The Skin jobs are seen as not quite human at the beginning of the film, they have killed to make it to earth and continue to act in a violent manner. Roy at the end makes a choice that would be human, he is choosing to be compassionate by saving Deckard (who is a Replicant) , thus proving his humanity. The point you made about not mattering in the grand scheme is the tip of the iceberg. The police, Tyrell, Blade Runners, are all acting as not human, or real. They act on base instincts. The reason it makes sense that Deckard is a Replicant is the setting a non real person to catch non real people. When he asks Tyrell about Rachel "how does it not know what it is" it sets the stage for Deckard to explore his own Realness. In the end it is his decision to leave with Rachel that he shows his humanity ( or reality). Deckard as human from the outset would not really grow so much as finally make a stand, whereas a Nexus 6 (or 7) choosing to do what is right would fulfill Tyrell's tagline of more human than human.

Roy spares Deckard to defy his destiny. He was build to kill and not killing Deckard proves, that replicants are not only machines and therefore slaves, is to act independent of their purpose.

I believe the reason for the multicultural environment in the movie relates to the movie's main influence. In the book, Do Androids...yadda yadda, the entire Earth is essentially uninhabitable due to a nuclear war, as well as a massive plague that wiped out much of the life on the planet. Basically all of the world's population is crammed into a few densely populated cities around the world.

Blade Runner. What a timeless classic Science Fiction movie, based on the novel "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick. A very dark, atmospheric movie, with the excellent soundtrack by Vangelis, and various other artists, that combines many cultures in the cityscape of Los Angeles in 2019. The 5th Version: "Blade Runner: The Final Cut" (1982) (2007) is the version the way Ridley Scott wanted the movie to be. As far as the different versions that exist go, there are actually 7 versions, 5 of these versions which have been put on DVD and Blu-ray, and other formats. I will state these afterwards. Currently Known Versions: 1. Workprint Prototype Version (1982) 2. San Diego Sneak Preview Version (1982) 3. U.S. Theatrical Release (1982) - with Harrison Ford's narration (Rick Deckard's) throughout the movie. 4. International Theatrical Release (1982) 5. U.S. Broadcast Version (1986) 6. The Director's Cut (1992) 7. The Final Cut (2007) - What Ridley Scott considers the best version - The way he wanted it to be in the first place, but originally they wouldn't him to release it that way, thinking the audience would not understand what was going on - that's why they used ongoing narration in the first version of the movie for that very reason, much to his frustration. Five versions have been released on the formats listed below: 1. 3. 4. 6. and 7. To find the different versions that/have existed on VHS, Betamax, Laserdisc, DVD, and Blu-ray go to Wikipedia: Versions of Blade Runner, to find out what has been released up to now.

Random thought: there's a roleplaying game called Cyberpunk 2020, which Lore namechecked in this 2016 rumination. In 2020, the game Cyberpunk 2077 came out. So now, as I write this in 2021, I find myself hoping that in 2077 they'll publish a holonovel or whatever we have at the time, and title it "Cyberpunk 2116".

You wondered what the Outer Colonies are like in Blade Runner. In my head cannon most 'gritty' sci fi stories fit into the BR verse for me. Such as: Aliens. Avatar. Riddick. And even Passengers. In my head cannon the movie Starship Trooper verse eventually took over and fixed the messed up Blade Runner world.

I don't think it matters if our protagonist is replicant or human. It's fun to play around with this question, but the outcome doesn't matter. Everyone is always talking about this subject while I think the movie has so much stronger material to focus on. All the details and world building in this film is just fantastic and that still holds up to this very day. Second: Roy Batty is the main character in this movie and Rutger Hauer elevates this to a whole other level with his performance. I still think it is his best work. I love the early directors version of this movie. Pre updated visuals and no unicorn dream (I think that scene adds very little, the origami of Gaff is plenty of symbolism). no voiceover, not going of into the sunset in the end. But going out strong with the words of Blade Runner Gaff: "too bad she won't live, but again who does?" That line together with Roy Batty's final speech blew my mind the first time I saw this film. It's really bittersweet but beautiful and I really don't understand what a helicopter scene had to add to that.. But again having the option to see multiple versions of this movie makes it even stronger... If only someone like George Lucas would understand such a concept..

ok so you could do a live watching of blade runner or any film, ive seen a couple of channels do this. how it works is you sit and watch the film on your end and the viewers watch it on there end so that you are watching it together, now i have seen it done with ""sporting"" event like WWE PPV's so doing it with a film would need a bit more setup as you need to pick a version to watch and synchronises the start, but been a bit out wouldn't be much of a problem. just did a look and neither netflix and amazon prime have it up (im sure they did at one point, but sigh) so for use that dont have a copy we can just watch a talking head witch im sure a lot of use would be completely ok with :)

I always thought Tyrell’s hubris was larger than life. He appreciated the fact Roy outsmarted everyone. He saw himself in him and didn’t fear his creation. He would have been prepared for this considering his intelligence. I do believe Tyrell was also a replicant or clone because he was still on Earth. Also his lack of empathy. As was said about the animal theme, they are reserved for the replicant characters. So, which animal is Rachel? Why was she shunned as soon as Deckerd figured her out? Does her lack of animal motif make her human? I just noticed the only time the sun is out is with Rachel. Also, from the deleted scene with Roy in the elevator, the mom voice makes him realize what a lie his life has been.

The gloves he's wearing in this one are a VERY different look for him; pretty much the only other time I think I recall him covering his hands was maybe in the Star Wars Episode 1 video. We know nothing about Deckard. For all we know, he could be the same model, or more advanced as Rachel. He could have no past and no family. He's a replicant built to hunt replicants. Rachel is a mirror reflecting Deckard's nature. The theme of the movie is "What does it mean to be human?" Deckard is the unicorn, the wondrous miracle, and Gaff is there watching over him. "You did a man's job," he says. The subsequent 2049 movie further solidifies my belief.

IN MEMORIAM ROY BATTY His Royal Satanic Majesty NEXUS 6. January 8, 2016 - November 2018 MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN Motto: Tyrell Corporation Roy Batty is Blade Runner’s True Hero. I first saw Blade Runner at a preview screening at The Directors’s Guild On Sunset Boulevard in 1982. I sat next to Cassie Peterson (Elvira), but that’s another story and will be told at another time. I found the Voiceover Narration execrable and the editing choppy, sort of a big disappointment. I did, however, really love the music, visuals and special effects. I discovered the choppiness was due to many missing scenes and just plain downright sloppy cutting. I saw the Director’s Cut in 1992, and it was a Revelation. My jaw literally dropped open and I rose up in my seat as the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Out of the Darkness rose Roy Batty, with his silvery-White mane and piercing blue eyes, wearing a high-collared black leather long coat, declaiming epic verse like a Luciferian Demon Fallen from the Heavens. Batty’s Entrance and Exit speeches are marvelous Revelations of Character. At first I took his words to be from John Milton’s Paradise Lost. So for decades I saw Roy Batty as Satan come to Earth, seeking out his Creator to exact his Just Vengeance. Only recently I learned that he was slightly misquoting William Blake from America: A Prophecy. “Fiery the Angels fell Deep Thunder rolled around the Shores, Burning with the Fires of Orc.” As he climbs his way up to the Pinnacle of the Tyrell Corporation to avenge his Death Sentence and possibly gain a Reprieve, he becomes an Angel of Death. His Name Roy: (French, roi-King; Batty ( Baddie or Crazy). He is the King Crazy Bad Guy in the (Cyber) Flesh. His Antagonist, Rick Deckard, The nominal Hero, is a professional killer. A Blade Runner, though exactly what William S. Burroughs title for an Aztec Warrior is supposed to mean still eludes my understanding. Deckard is dead inside. A burnout case, barely able to cope with his recall to duty. He shuffles around like the Walking Dead, trying to end the cyberlives of bio-synthetic Fugitives. The Irony, of course, is that if he does nothing, the Replicants will all die anyway in a very short time. In the end, it is the Luciferian Angel who grants Life to his Adversary, becoming the real Hero and “More Than Human” in his final Apotheosis. “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All these moments will be lost in Time, like Tears in the Rain.”

no mention of gnosticism ? even today it seems like the actors still dont get that this is what its about. can this be true? why is gnosticism so rampant today? who stands to gain from everyone believing we are in a prison? check out the interview with Sean young where she says she hope society wont be like that in 2020. Yeah that's something I've wondered too. At first I thought he had some kind of condition but I'm thinking it's just something he uses to to express himself because it's not just the gloves but some of his outfits too

9:20 About cheap labor for the colonies;; if you have intelligent androids and other AI, why would you need human labor at all? I haven't seen the movie, so it doesn't make much sense.
@Lorerunner8 жыл бұрын
And yet several fictional settings use slave labor instead of the cheaper, easier access to robots, droids, or what have you. The general idea is either that the human life is actually worth LESS than the 'cheaper' alternative, thus either being or being perceived as cheaper... or 2, it's part of a deliberate attempt to grind down the lower classes of people.

+Lorerunner A real life example of this is in the American south after the slave trade was banned, slaves became a valuable resource more valuable than immigrant labour who were promptly given the most dangerous jobs.
@timlennox74918 жыл бұрын
The mere existence of slaves in a society lowers the wages of all workers. Having slaves around means you can pay "free" workers less, and you still need "free" workers to do the jobs you can't trust to the slaves (either because of experience, empathy, or sensitivity). I imagine the effect with robots is lower than it is with "human" slaves, ie, wages don't go down as much with a robot workforce as it does with a slave workforce. But it's hard to know without a historical reference point (a society with a robot work force to compare to one with a slave work force). Of course, the Blade Runner/Alien world may have mixed labor and we just never see the armies of robots working the factory floors, though that is always what I imagined was happening at Tyrell's manufacturing plants. BTW, why no reference to Weyland-Yutani in Blade Runner? Why no reference to Tyrell in Alien? Does anyone know? I'm curious that Rachel did not get more consideration in your (always insightful) rumination. I think she drives the plot as much as any of the other characters. As Deckard develops feelings for her, with her, the hopelessness of the entire setting slowly begins to melt. Deckard is saved at a point when his life is finally worth saving, when he finds purpose, when he finds meaning loving/protecting Rachel.

Tim Lennox Ridley has since confirmed that the Alien and Blade Runner universes are shared, but separated by time. He considered making David a "Roy" model but decided he didn't want the timelines to link that closely. See the special features on Prometheus DVD and Blu-Ray for the source of my info. In light of Alien: Covenant developments, it's clear Ridley is continuing to think about artificial life's relationship to its creators, whether A.I. can become creator itself, what that says about what it means to be human, and the evolution of humanity vs. the evolution of A.I. Some people see this as a betrayal of the horror/suspense genre roots of Alien, while I view it as a natural progression of those themes. Even before Ridley confirmed it, I always felt Blade Runner and Alien were closely linked thematically in their exploration of the sociopolitical, moral and ethical implications of A.I. in the near-future. I have a long and complex relationship to Blade Runner as a film. It came out when I was 11, and I first saw it at age 14 on TBS cable in Atlanta on a Sunday afternoon, the theatrical version with the voiceover, but they didn't cut Roy's murder of Tyrell one frame. It was fascinating to me at that young age, my first exposure to a man kissing another man, which was even more shocking to my over-protected teen mind than the murder that followed it. Not sure where my mom was but she never would have allowed me to see these things, had she known! To this day, it's my favorite film, so many topics to discuss and debate, not to mention the effect on filmmaking and popular culture. I've seen every version and bought it on every format, including laserdisc and VHS before DVD existed, and it was the first Blu-Ray I ever bought. I've studied the work print and played "spot the difference" to the Final Cut. Despite its many flaws, I can watch Blade Runner repeatedly and never lose my passion for this film. Linking it to the Alien universe can only increase my enthusiasm!

Bladerunner, and by extension cyberpunk, is an early critique of the neoliberal regime? Perhaps so. Another subtle point this genre contains: it is possible to make money off the poor. Keep them poor as a wealth-generating strategy.
