First off, I love your rumination analyses. While I don't always agree with your opinions, you defend them well, and never come across as arrogant. Second, I personally love the FF7 ending. In some sense, the story really reaches its climax during the final (lengthy) CGI sequence, and is unexpectedly resolved by the direct intervention of the Lifestream. Not only is this sequence beautiful and technically impressive for 1997, it firmly establishes a crucial plot point: that Aeris has been there helping all along, and is still fighting alongside Cloud and his crew... even now. (This echoes the theme of the wonderful Seto/Nanaki subplot as well.) There is symmetry, too. Aeris's face is both the first and last thing you see before the credits roll, and those three musical notes are both the first and last ones you hear. A perfect bookend. It still gives me chills.

I think FF7 fully explains itself and prefer it without the additions and the original reasons for characters motives are more vague but just precise enough for us to really explore their details if we choose to. From a gaming standpoint, the original silent hill accomplished this. whereas all subsequent instalments have deliberately made core points of the plot more obvious. The exact same thing happened to final fantasy the series was 'refined' with this in mind. This new trend shows in all supplements to FF7, all made AFTER the original. Just my 2c.

The thing about the last battle with sephiroth is spot on, IF you did all the optional sidequests. He really isn't a pushover with most people level 60, on their first play-through. They probably don't have ultima weapons, mime, knights of the round. They probably didn't spend hours in the submarine mining stat+ items from the jenova monsters. When I did my first play through at (13?) I barely beat sephiroth. In my second play-through i demolished him just with knights of the round, on the third play-through my guys had super stats so I just beat him with normal attacks. The game really does let you become much stronger then you ever need to. But really when you go this route you are already pretty much stating that your last boss fights are going to be Ruby and Emerald weapon. The games combat system was never really challenging in the first place either. Shortly after the start you get an ability to heal your entire party that just keeps getting stronger. Most fights in the game can be won simply by spamming heals and normal attacks. And after you get enemy skill and manipulate you can throw most of your magic materia away. I think soon as I got out of midgar i was casting aqualung(which basically is like water3/all). I guess my only complaint when you go the super powerful route is that there is nothing challenging left to whoop on after emerald and ruby are gone. Like the arena system of ff10. It kind of reflects how awesome of a game it was though. I mean after you are done with everything, built into god mode, you really are craving more ff7. I don't think I've ever played a game I liked and been like I'm glad this is over now. It's usually like, is that it? Cmon, just one more pixel. Aeris show me your titty. Cmon. SOMETHING ELSE PLEASE AHHHH.

while i had played 4 and 6 before, i had also thought the entirety of the game was going to happen in Midgar. i figured, it was a well promoted (mass appeal geared) game on what was then, a new platform, and, i figured it was going to go in a new direction that way. When i found out that it expands into a more traditional over world map, i remember being so pleased with that. Conversely: this set me up for disappointment when playing 10. for a good while into it, i expected it to "open up" to a free explore-able map like 7 did, and, using the "hallway" would just become a mostly obsolete method of traveling to the "main" cities. I started to get a sinking feeling as a lot of story was progressing, and, i was pretty much dashed when, i was lead to backtracking down the "hallway" . Oddly, i was ready to accept it in 7, but, that set me up to be disappointed highly with 10. in a strange way, 7 set me up to dislike 10, and, not bother finishing it.

Every FF in a nutshell: "The planet's dyin' Cloud!"
@chibicat138 жыл бұрын
Personally I think Cloud was Tifa's love interest, instead of the other way around. There are good arguments on both sides as to who Cloud loves, but the game was done in such a way that it is the player that makes the choice. However after reading some of the translated 'Dismantling Final Fantasy 7' book, Aerith is the default Golden Saucer date if the player goes through the game normally... so that got me thinking on what side Square was leaning on when they created the love triangle, that and Tifa was created later on in the game's development and served as sort of a foil for Aerith. Personally I did not mind Tifa's character until it got to the point of the game where it is revealed how she lied to Cloud and kept a lot of information from the group about what happened in Nibelheim, I also found it a little weird how she fantasied about being a damsel who is saved by a hero.... but that's just me. I do agree when you say that Cloud, Aerith and Tifa are the primary characters of the game, there really is a work-around if the others where not in it.
@pressstarttodie497 жыл бұрын
Regardless of who the intended love interest was, I always found it interesting that Tifa is so capable yet still had this fantasy about being rescued. Really added depth to her character.

There is no love triangle cloud doesnt become himself until the later half of the game when him and tifa fall into the lifestream... up til then he pretti much thought he was zach...which is why ol girl pressed him sooo hard in midgard...
@chibicat134 жыл бұрын
@@trustedbp The love triangle is very real, both women have an interest in Cloud, but the theory that Aerith was attracted to him due to similarities to Zack are false. Cloud did not believe he was Zack, just just had some of his memories. In the game's English script Aerith said that she wasn't serious with Zack and the Japanese script states they weren't even properly dating. While it's true Aerith does see some similarities that Cloud has with Zack, she said it really bothered her that they were alike, and stated that she wants to know Cloud for who he really is. In the novella Maiden of the Planet has Aerith explicitly reject Zack in favor of Cloud. There are also numerous sources that Aerith did not have hope for a long term relationship with Zack because 1. It was a puppy-love relationship, and 2. she was aware of his reputation of a ladies man, so she wasn't content on staying with someone who would most likely move on to someone else.
@trustedbp4 жыл бұрын
No offense but in crisis core u get that established relationship between zach and aerith...its not even an argument in stori telling...it onli features in Japanese harem thrope...cloud loves tifa but onli as a friends she got friend zoned when cloud was comatosed... he did lose some of his memories of tifa she reminded him they made a promise he still vaugli remember his promise to protect her...I'm not knocking tha reason for ur turn on tifa in the original...that is what drew me to her she undoubtedli loves cloud the most and deserved his attention...but unless you urself went beyond the script tifa never got those feelings from cloud cept when he was lil...he onli had a crush on tifa when they were little...people grow feelings change and when he met aerith she grew on him...
@delsingray5923 Жыл бұрын
@@chibicat13 love triangle is real. However, it is not false: Aerith admits she was attracted to Cloud initially due to the similarities. Also, everything that happened to set up FF7 in Cloud's perspective was because Cloud was interested in Tifa.

Wonderful review! Though I personally believe at the time when Sephiroth was in the Shinra Mansion's basement in Nibelheim, after he found out about his creation and the lies from Hojo about Jenova being his mother, and what was implied as Jenova starting her control of him during that period, mixed with her already strong influence do to the cells injected into him while he was in Lucretia's womb, he was more or less a puppet of Jenova from Nibelheim onward. That's what I got out of it.

FF7 was the first ever game apart from metal gear though slightly different reasons that hit me on a very deep emotional level. For such a simple game graphically and musically that to me is an astounding achievement. You are correct however, I haven't played the rest but I don't particularly like Pink Floyd but dark side of the moon is my favorite album, I don't particularly like Metalica but the black album is superb! Your analysis of Sephorith was almost in point until you've mentioned his so called enlightment to move his actions to higher planes. The Sephiorth you assessed is at best pre-Nibelheim Sephiroth. After Nibelheim, he completely gave up his will to Jenova, who is actually, the driving force of the entire game. After Nibelheim, Sephiroth's story is over, and he died and remained dead through from the flash backs. He was never revived and never reconstructed by his own will to materialize later as the One Wing Winged Angel Godly Sephiroth. That person we see entrapped inside the crystallized mako who Cloud frees from North Crater is none other than Jenova's new body. The Sephiroth that we know, or at least his human aspect from his human cells had deteriated and became one with the Lifestream. His final wish was to go to the Promise Land while he was in a mental state believing that Jenova was a Cetra. 5 years before Cloud and party brought the Black Materia to "Sephiroth", Sephorith's goal was to bring the planet back to the Cetra. However, Jenova as Sephiroth killed Aerith simply because she was the last Cetra and had the potential to use the White Materia. If that had been Sephiroth controlling Jenova, then he would have spared Aerith. But that wasn't the case here. The Sephiroth we encounter in North Crater has the same instincts and goals as Jenova, who Jenova before landing on Gaea had been doing this planet hoping since the beginning of time. Out of all the character in FFVII; Sephiroth displayed the weakest set of will power. Giving up to the influence and control of Jenova within a time span of 48-72 hours. Jenova wasn't the one who imbued herself as a Cetra to Sephiroth. He came up with that conclusion himself and Jenova allowed it because she would know he would free her if he thought that (Similar to Aerith pretending she was Jenova at the end of Advent Children when she was speaking to Kadaj to let go and return into the lifestream). Sephiorth took Jenova's head and both of them fell into the lifestream per Janova's plan to seek the Planet's secrets.

I mean a lot of Zack’s story does get explained by the time Cloud falls into the lifestream; you just don’t explicitly get to see his death unless you find that scene in the basement. I thought it was such a cool secret to find. More modern games need to place secret lore bits around like that

Great review! I will always remember FFVII fondly after changing Cloud's name to my own (Zack) and ending up just completely lost in translation when they explained Zack Fair. As much as I enjoyed FFVII it felt rushed near the end for me. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as Xenogears' disc two though, thanks to FFVIII *grumbles*. On a side note, it pained me how FFVII fandom and Tales series fandom was so detrimental to the rpg market. Square/Namco was our Anakin Skywalker haha.

It's crazy that I hadn't discovered these great FF videos until now, but I'm glad I have! I'm having a blast binging them all. It's also amusing watching this video now that FFVII Remake is actually out. Now.. speaking of remakes.. I DREAM of the day that we finally get an FFVI remake!! I find it almost depressing that FFVI, the best game in the series, does not have a good definitive version to play today. Yes.. the GBA port is good (and exists in emulation), but the inferior sound and tiny screen really holds it back from being a true definitive version, especially by today's standards. Honestly, the best the fans can do is to keep the pressure up on Square (respectfully and with good taste of course!) to let them know the demand is there for it. And I see that frequently over the past few years.. many fans are asking Square to remake this masterpiece, so hopefully it's only a matter of time. Until then, I'm waiting patiently yet eagerly!

Archengaia, your reviews, while very entertaining, cater only to a specific audience (that audience being the ones who have already played the game). Although I do like seeing you review games I know about (TOR, Mass Effect, WoW, Skyrim, FF1, etc), I would think it be a good idea for your to try to explain the game in a way that introduces people who have never played the game before, while still going on about specific mechanics/niches in it that people who have played it know all about.

I believe 7 is the longest running FF cause of all the prequels and sequels. Would be awesome if you did a vid on every FF7 entry and how it is actually all linked together.

Archengeia Actually:i'm tempted to put tactics before 4 and then 4 and then 7.I was impressed with the storytelling.

+Lorerunner Huh your list almost perfectly mirrors mine (except that 7 is number two for me, and 4 is number three). I have to mention that I haven't played 1, 2 or 3, and admit to a large amount of nostalgia which is probably colouring my putting 7 at number two, although I did replay the whole game just recently, in preparation for the remake. It will be very interesting to see what they do with the remake actually, now that they've finally decided to stop cockteasing us over it. Do you have any new thoughts, suspicions and/or fears about the upcoming remake (closer to the date)?

+Lorerunner Wow. XII is fairly high on your list all things considered. I'll have to play it myself pretty soon.

I like to think that Hojo was driven by a desire to right the wrong of happily giving his son up for experimentation by supporting Sephiroth, but at the same time, doubt it because of what a terrible person he was. Love the video!

FF VII was the first JRPG I played... and it was an out of the world experience for me at the time. I think its a game worthy of the title Final Fantasy and it deserves a review this long. To each his own, of course.
@Lorerunner12 жыл бұрын
Well the PC version is slightly different but aside from that fact, there is no difference in the various editions of FFVII so any copy you get will be the same as any other copy. It comes down to what is the easiest, or most affordable possibility for you and your circumstance.

I like your in depth review. Its great! But I have to disagree on something. While you only recomend ff 4,5,6,7 I have got to add in ff 9. That's personally my favorite. And ff tactics! My list goes 1. Ff 9 2. Ff 4 3. Ff 7 4. Ff tactics

This game has THE best Cid of all the other ff's. I adore that characters story ark in this game so much, it was much more moving for me than most everything else in the game, and even rivaled the brilliance of VI.

So 6 is your favorite and 7 is your third; what’s in second place?

I've played most of the series and the 2 that are my favorites are FF7 and FFT. They tie for me. Just sayin. I've played (in Japanese order) 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 CC, 7, 7DC, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, 13, 15, FFT, FFTWotL, FFTA, DFF. Out of those I beat 1, 4, 6, 7CC, 7, 7DC, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12, 13, FFT, FFTWotL, FFTA and DFF. I've seen the FF movies as well (FF7 AC/ACC, FF, and FF15 Kingsgliave). I also have seen 3 DVDs of the anime series. Also regarding Sephiroth being easy at the end... eh... yes and no... You can do the "easy" route and use Ribbon, beat him at level 60(ish) and pretty much wipe the floor with him as you said... but I didn't. I'm not sure if you knew this or not but you can give Sephiroth MAJOR stat boosts by getting at some of your characters to level 99, defeating I think it's the head of "Bizarro Sephiroth" a few times, and something else I think. Also... I didn't use Ribbon. He actually is much harder like that... We're talking he can kill you in about 2 rounds maybe if you're lucky you withstand 3. Even with KotR, Omnislash, and mimic and stuff, yeah he's still a beast. I hate when people don't mention that but say "oh he's super easy". I mean... yeah if you beat him at level 60 he's a pushover.... but how I did it giving him those stat bonuses and no Ribbon, yeah he's so much harder and makes Kefka look like a simple little peon.

@1:44:00 Cloud pre-mako was weak, and scrawny and had delusions of grandeur - but he wasn't a coward. He tended to take on challenges he wasn't capable of rather than run from things he could take action for (not counting his personal demons post-mako).

My very first FF game ever was actually interestingly enough FF8, which is definitely a strange title to start with. And I will also say that I too think the final dungeon music is amazing and appropriately epic despite the somewhat letdown final dungeon.

I bought it at launch. rushed through it a bit Didn't like it put it away. years later.. I dug it out from the bottom of hundreds of games.. put it in.. gave it another try. went into it with a different mentality this time. took my time. felt it out and.. I liked it. My final thoughts.. 8 has a different dynamic than 7. I like them both for different reasons.

Strongly second these questions. Could the concept of a "solid black wall as a backdrop" you've mentioned in your Dragon Age review be applied here?

Why use air quotes when saying ff1,2,3 in the beginning in you video? Were they called something else?

Actually:I argued on the ff shrine forum that hojo is one of the most evil sick individuals in the ff series.Truly sick and evil, not mwahaha evil, and the reason for that being:His experiments he did to sephiroth and what he did to zach in crisis core laughing putting you into one of those vr things was pretty evil.He also betrayed shinra and helped sephiroth to try and destroy the world and injected himself with jenova cells, so yeah:He is also nuts.Don't forget he also tried to feed aerith to red in a cage at the beginning.
