36:08 Clearly, as Spock is our first, and main representation of Vulcans in Trek, it makes sense we would assume all Vulcans are like him or Sarek. The fact is, Spock is unusually gifted. In Amok Time, he's referred to as a legend among his own people. That should give you a good idea of just how off the scale he was.

Thank you for this series of videos, especially the length. Its like kicking back talking 'bout movies with a buddy. Star Trek IV is my second favorite (sometimes first depending on my mood) of the original series films with Wrath (usually) in the first slot. I saw Trek III when I was a kid, then saw Trek II later on, so I was primed and ready for Trek IV and it did not disappoint at all. I especially loved that theme which stuck with me for many years since. I remember coming home from school and my mom had bought a new VCR and rented a copy of Trek IV and I loved it. This was 1988 I believe.

The hospital section was quite good. Of course I felt pretty bad for the doctors of this movie. They go through a crazy situation and are just doing their best to help people. But it is hilarious since we have this bigger picture. It's a fun movie. It's pretty crazy, and has plot holes, but still one of the most enjoyable Star Trek movies to watch.

Don't forget Lore, because of Star Trek IV, we got your keen interest in Star Trek that arose from TNG and mine as well. I watched all of TNG with my family (admittedly in reruns). You've said that it helped to create a friendship between you and your mom. Well, TNG brought me and my dad closer together and helped to create our friendship. It was a big part of my childhood even after the show ended. So, as a person affected, I would like to thank you myself for going to see this movie and making TNG happen.

"Star Trek IV is the only one where nobody dies." Have you forgotten 20th century whale biologist, Dr. Gillian Taylor, who hitched a ride to the 23rd century? By the standards of the 1980's. she disappeared, "and was declared dead seven years later."

One note on the holding your breath thing (1:10:00) .... Kirk was swimming in cold ocean water, wearing trousers, shirt, and boots. Not just swimming, but diving, navigating the ship and the hold, and finding each control. That's a lot of activity, burning up his oxygen supply. Not to knock your ability, but it's a little different when you're sitting in a chair surrounded by the stuff.

the interesting aspect of this movie is, that, as a time travel story, it is also a perfect encapsulation of the way things were in the us in the mid eighties. so if you watch it today, its not just a time travel into the future, but also into the present of the past. :-)

Great rumination! I remember seeing George Takei sometime after the movie came out and he talked about the missing scene where he was to have talked to his however many times great grandfather. He was very down to earth and nice about how the boy had done his best best hadn't worked out. One note he did make was sometime after the shoot, he tried to find the boy and found him getting either berated or even slapped by the mother (can't remember which). George said that that wasn't necessary and explained the difficulties of being in front of the camera. On another side story, George said Leonard Nimoy was great to work with as a director. Wow, i do remember the Challenger disaster. To this day I can't remember if I watched it live or after an announcement had been made on the PA in school. Things seems to screech to a halt, space wise, since then and unfortunately, the Columbia accident did help at all.

This movie was the one I first saw with my family, around 20 or so years ago as a family event. I remember how fun it was, despite being really young(I was like 3 or 4), and it really kickstarted my love of not only Star Trek, but science fiction as a whole. So if you wanna know how I became a geek? well, this is it. anyhow, After watching this... well, I reaally want to watch this movie again.

The Voyage Home book by Vonda McIntyer et al. has the dialogue between the probe and the whales and it's really good. I don't remember it in full detail but the probe basically criticizes the whales' song as "poor and simple" at which point the whales explain the whole situation and promise to do better once the ocean is repopulated. I like that. I'm not sure subtitles in the movie would do any good though. It might be slightly better if Spock summed it up but it still works best without words I guess.

I know books aren't considered main Canon, but the "autobiography" of kirk that came out several years ago explains ST 5 as being a movie created in the 23rd century by a person on the planet from the TOS episode Bread and Circuses, based on stories told to him by his mother. It's also heavily implied that this person's father is likely Kirk himself.

1:00:48 I see what you're say here, but the TV series and movies don't bear that out. When McCoy goes back in time in City on the Edge of Forever, time changes. It changes instantly, and Kirk and co were only saved by the influence of the Guardian. When the Borg travel back in time in First Contact, time changes instantly. Yesterday's Enterprise? Clearly there is no hard and fast rule, and it largely depends on the writer.

This is one of my favorite Star Trek movies, I bought this on VHS in 1991? 25th anniversary? I watched it recently, flaws more evident, but the crew's chemistry is the best one for the original cast. It reminds me the most of an episode than the others. I always enjoyed the episodes that when broken down are about human optimism, progress and even celebration. Agreed about the subtitle point, I cant imagine the subtitles between whales and probe being anything but silly, especially seeing as the conversation seemed to last 2 minutes. "hey where have you guys been? ive been tearing this place up looking for you!" "oh we were killed off, yeah, but we're back now so, its cool... why dont you write us a letter or something, have a safe trip back"

Thanks, I'm thoroughly enjoying these Star Trek ruminations. @36:00 - As to Vulcans of less than commanding intellect, I'm reminded of the guy on Star Trek: ENT. There's an episode wherein Vulcans are on board the Enterprise (I forget why.) Trip asks one of them if Vulcans dance. The guy he asks is NOT super-intelligent, to say the least. He seems almost lackadaisical, in fact. I think it turns out that his father is ill, but since they've had some falling out in the past, he doesn't want to talk to him. And of course, there's the Vulcan male on Voyager who dukes it out with B'Elanna. He's not much brighter than the average human; just _logical_. Anyway, I love this movie as well. Like you say, it's just fun. tavi.

I think this is a D-12 bird-of-prey. From what I can tell, the D-12 was the 12-man ship that they made to land on planets and test the newly acquired cloaking device, and the B’rel was the bigger version designed to keep up with the new technology, and then the K’vort was the one that was made to show off how imagination had died in the Klingon Empire, only matched in stupidity by the super-sized one that matched the Galaxy in size. Sorry, This is a huge nitpic, but it keeps getting to me. I’m a model builder, and I keep finding these inconsistencies that are just... just the greatest. But still, from what I can tell, the “D-class” is the prototype for the design, and the actual classes are off-shoots to use the technology and sizes of the various refits. Like the D-7 eventually spawning the K’t’inga.

i counter the thing about the probe's doom beam and it knowing how bad its effecting earth with something from babylon 5 in the beginning, the whole reason the war started was because the Minbari didnt realise what effect there sensors had on a less advanced ships tech (then the Humans over react, then the Minbari over react then bad things happen) granted its not a full explanation but sometimes people do stuff or build things without fully thinking through the consequences.

You speak of the Probe novel, but there is also a lot of information in the film novelization. In it, the whale probe was sentient and had communicated with cetacean life for countless thousands of years across many worlds. When it lost contact with those on Earth, it came to investigate (taking several hundred years to do so) and found none alive. It considered the other lifeforms present on the planet to be unimportant at best and at worst the murderers of the cetaceans, and decided to purge the planet so that evolution could begin again and eventually bring about new cetaceans. It was, in essence, wiping the slate clean of what it considered an unsatisfactory evolutionary path in order to start from scratch and get results it liked better however many hundreds of millions of years down the line. In a way that makes it like a vengeful and yet detached god, seeking to wipe out life on Earth for the sin of eliminating the cetaceans from existence. So yes, the destruction was a direct result of mankind driving the whales to extinction and can be considered a consequence for those actions. That those consequences came a few hundred years late was of no concern to a being who was millions of years old and thought in geologic timeframes.

Hey Arch, great show, great video :). One of the 10 viewers of your Voyager Ruminations as well. Well, listener, since I usually use the time riding the sub to work to listen to this... I just had to stop, to quickly comment on the hospital scene, which is a scene I also find funny and great, but the way McCoy acts always bugs me. Compared to Star Trek, our medicine is not as advanced, but I would think that he would appreciate, that we are on our way there. Our technology is not stagnant, but evolving and at some point merging into the tech level of Star Trek (well, within universe). He treats those doctors like butchers, when their approach might also have saved Chekovs life. Star Trek does this from time to time (we don't need money, we are better than that) and it always feel like they look down on the past. Not the mistakes of the past, but the past in general with all the primitive people there. Then again, it kinda fits with the mind set of people in the federation depending on where they grew up (it's easy to be a saint in paradise kinda)... Still a great movie, also my #4 (First contact #1, just because I prefer Picard to the old crew, ST6 #2 and ST2 #3), this just always bugs me. A little bit at least...

How long would it take to build a brand new Constitution class? I'd say it's more likely they refitted a retired ship, and did so quite hastily. The refit was based on the original plans, but the hull itself was field repaired over 2 or 3 five year missions and thanks to the accumulated drift and undocumented changes nothing fits as it should. Explains how they could get it done in a reasonable time for Kirk to get back into the captains chair, and it explains the shoddy workmanship.

So, overall for the TOS movies for me this falls way behind 2 and 6, but ahead of 1. We don't even need to talk about 5. So it's kinda middle of the pack with 3 and I might put 3 slightly ahead actually.

I learned about Challenger in school - one of the few things i learned in class that i remember. I hate to sound callous, but unfortunately, in reality, you die in one of two ways - you waste and wither away, or you get Bobba Fetted. And honestly, i'd pick option 2 in a second if i had the choice. Well, maybe not in a second, i might think about it a little or a while, but that's probably how i'd want to go, provided it was quick - which i know there's not really a way of verify if that's how the Challenger crew got it, but i'd hope so, naive as that may be. I have a weird relationship with Star Trek IV. I really like it, but i don't know why, and i don't know why anyone else does. I guess "it's a fun movie" is as good a reason as any, and yeah, i think it is. Maybe it's because they go back in time using Doc Emmet Brown's ship, i dunno. Now, as for the Probe just being a semi-intelligent automaton that doesn't know it's causing catastrophic damage to an entire planet, i just don't buy it. Like, the thing was designed by people. Humongously advanced people, that even if they had never encountered another society which had power needs that functioned differently from theirs, a planet is still a planet. Especially an AQUATIC Planet. They designed a probe that wrecks havoc on the medium that they LIVE in. Now, if it says in the book that one of the designers was a psychopath. Like, if one of them was secretly the aquatic Joker, then i could just shrug and go "ok, i guess that explains it". Anything short of that, no. Just no. Btw, you know more than me, but i thought the Nuclear Wessels scene was done for real. Pretty sure i saw a Behind the Scenes piece on it. Am i crazy?

Well, I said I could buy it. But I’d buy it the same way I’d buy a VW Beetle made in 1960 with a rusted out floor pan under the passenger side that I could see the ROAD through - out of desperation and necessity only! And only using it long enough to get me from point A to point B to move the plot along. ;D

"It was fun," was the best synopsis of ST4. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If more movies were made with entertaining fans 1st and subverting expectations later, the movie industry wouldn't be killing franchises at every turn. To this day Star Trek IV remains to be my favourite movie of the TOS era. Despite all the plotholes I enjoy the movie very much, simply because everything else is so good. The funny parts, the fun parts and the chemistry between Kirk, Spock and all the others... It is like there is not a single scene that I didn't like, except maybe the time travel scene you mentioned. I didn't know about the planned subtitles but it reminded me of the movie "Finding Forrester". SPOILERS: Sean Connery held a inspiring speech in front of a class at the end of the movie. The class could hear every word but the viewer could not. The director decided to mute his words and play some emotional music instead. He did this, in my opinion, because not matter which lines would have been spoken, they would fall short of our expectations. Even if Sean Connery would say them. Kinda similar here: Nothing would have been gained by subtitles. No gravitas, no drama, nothing and only under best circumstances. It had the potential to cheapen the scene, though. So yeah, probably a good decision to leave them out.

Star Trek 4 is just okay to me. It's a decent movie for sure, but there are too many points that were just nonsensical, moments of forced tension, and preachiness to make it more than an occasional fun watch for me. Certainly one of the better Star Trek movies for sure, but not anything super special - solidly in the middle. When I saw this when I was younger, I thought the whale probe was "that big thing from the first movie." Also, Vulcan engineers are gnomes and there's a living mannequin in the Federation council room at the end.

I think there were three reasons. 1) I think it was the first TOS I had seen, so I didn't have the context of the friendships between the characters, or why Spock acted the way he did. They were just caricatures that I knew through pop culture at that point. 2) The "save the whales" story was *really* on the nose at that time. 3) Time travel was handwaved away much too easily. Which was far from the last or worst time Trek would do that, of course, especially in the movies, but it was the first time it really bugged me.

I like this film. I don’t know of any other film that include’s Christopher Lloyd’s ride being stolen and used to travel through time! I’m sure someone must have died during the film, if only the pilots of those shuttles that lost power inside Spacedock and presumably plummeted down to the depths of the docking bay...

lets say it this way... I think the Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy definition of dolphin/whale society is most accurate... they definitely are equally a being rather than animals, but, whilst humans trade marry divorce and make war, they bob around in the ocean, and think they are better, Humans think they are better for exactly thesame reasons...

Totally agree that this movie is simply FUN! I personally think the plot was timely/current in the 80s. in the 70s whales and whale song became a phenomenon. the popularity of whales activated the general public to vote for and demand environmental regulations and conservation! whale migration paths and song is in many ways still a mystery to biologist (also they are mammals like humans, so much larger than humans, etc etc) My point is the idea of a alien species communicating and forming an alliance with them them rather than humans make sense to me 🐋 ok so death ray probe thing is a bit over dramatic but it’s gets us where we need to go. I just watched these movies for the first time in my mid 30s, it’s 2020 (well i did see Khan a while back) Shatner was funny and endearing, thanks to Nimoy’s direction (re: Star trek V) And the doctor was a badass, lucky lady to ditch all the climate change deniers 👽🖖

It is in our current world, yes, but it shouldn't be. And it won't be once global climate change catches up.

About the issue of preaching: I don't like it either, and I do get plenty of it even when I might not want or need it. But I tolerate it, and the reason why is, I think there are people who wouldn't get it otherwise. Of course, present company excluded, but how many people do you know or have you met and dealt with, who would need that "bonk on the head" message (to borrow an expression from the guys over on Mission Log) because otherwise they wouldn't get it if it was too subtle.

The problem with time travel in Star Trek is that the time travel is always stupid. Always. What makes the handful of time travel stories so memorable is because they were NOT time travel stories. They used time travel as a vehicle to do a character piece. And, of course, the people with the money consistently refuse to understand this. What do they always want to do with Star Trek? Time travel, time travel, time travel. And it very, very, very seldom works well.

I don’t mind eating all sorts of animals including some types of insects. But I also lived for about a third of my life in South Korea so that might explain that. I have also eaten live octopus. Well technically it wasn’t alive but it was still moving. 😁

You made me think on this. The Probe was so powerful that its mere passing shut down all power sources and once it passed and was long gone, the power source would remain shut off. Is that a residual dampening field? Also you keep referring to the captured Klingon ship as the Berrell. Bones, with a fine sense of historical irony gave it the name Bounty. As to the three months Kirk and crew stayed on Vulcan, I think Ambassador Sarek had granted Kirk and company a form of sanctuary as thanks for bringing back Spock's body for refusion with his Katra residing in Bones's head. Best Star Trek story with time travel? Clearly its the City on the Edge of Forever. Nothing else in TOS, Next Gen, Voyager, DS9. Enterprise, STD, or any of the movies came close to its sheer power of story telling. All the others used time travel as a gimmick. The Punk on the bus was problematic. Why did everyone clap? Did they just witness a murder? Did they even care? Favorite scene? Kirk on Vulcan, looking up to Spock standing high on the ridge looking down on Kirk.

I prefer my Star Trek a bit darker than this, but it is a good film and a lot of fun. Disappointing soundtrack though.

Just want to say two things. Well three. First, as always enjoy your stuff, im watching things out of order but regardless. 2. How many books had you read by this time because there are so many other good books, you seemed to recommend so little. and 3. The Probe only starts to do the oceans thing once it realises the whales aint there and it basically goes "Welp, fuck ya'll", lol. Anyways, my 2 cents, i could write forever but wont.

I know this video is over 5 years old, and I love almost everything about it, but God DAMN do those r-words bother me.

I've considered tearing down all of the videos that have it in it. The idea of it being offensive was only even mentioned to me extremely recently (obviously since it's more recent than only 5 years ago) and I don't use the word anymore out of respect, but obviously that doesn't do much for prior stuff.

@@Lorerunner I actually don't want to see these old videos taken down. And I've talked to a lot of people who aren't autistic (like I am) who genuinely didn't know the gravity of the word they were using. That's the vibe I got from this video, and I'm glad to see it confirmed. Thanks for responding!
