Ok, there was a falling out between, Prince and Andre after he left the band. In an interview, Andre said he hadn’t talked to Prince in years and that when he heard that his mom was in the hospital (Ms. Anderson) Prince, Mayte and Larry Graham came to the hospital. They met in the elevator and Prince said are we ok . Andre laughed and said yeah. Andre Cymone story changes so much. I also remember him saying that he purchased Prince first guitar and that was a lie. I’m really done with hearing his made up events. At the end of the day, Prince drive and hard work helped him become the legend that he will always be.

Im glad you cleared this up. I didn't know too much about Andre Cymone, but I knew that him and Prince were best friends, thick as thieves like brothers. I did hear in one of Prince's first tv interviews were he talks about meeting Andre at a club and asking him about doing the song Dance Electric. It seems like everything was all to the good. Their versions sound very similar. They were so connected musically and personally, that I understand that friends drift apart and things happen but Andre got to do his own thing and Prince got to do his. Prince still called Andre his best friend. I saw part of an interview Andre did last year and he said nothing but great things about him. They are family 4 life.

So happy you've done this counter video disputing the other one you did. You show fairness and compassion in setting the record straight.👏 That's why i didn't comment on the other one but this coming from Andre is what i heard in his numerous interviews over the years. I heard the 1st one in 2014 and it was superb. A very fair and reasonable statement to make is that Andre said didn't actively listen to Prince's music after he left his band. It's only natural because he would be doing his own thing it's probably fair to say that Prince didn't listen to Andre's stuff either as he was busy doing HIS own thing. Even the great Susan Rogers had said that she hasn't listened Prince music after she'd left and many of his Associates would say exactly the same thing it's a very natural thing. There are those die-hard farms that never stop listening to Prince which is excellent but does not diminish at all the fact that others have not heard everything that Prince has put out publicly. Andre and Prince have a deep connection that no-one else had. Probably not even Tyka. I hope to read Andre's considered coherent story of he and Prince one day and maybe we will all meet in the middle. Richest blessings to you and fam 💜

Thank you for making this video to clear up the false stories regarding Prince and Andre. Both men may have had their occasional “moments” but I truly believe that there is a spiritual connection between them that will live on. They are not false stories. Andre just doesn't want the conflict so he doesn't talk bad about Prince.
@otakurocklee4 жыл бұрын
Who from Andre Cymone's camp said the stories were wrong? Just because they say that doesn't mean they're right. Prince took advantage of Andre, Andre was hurt and talked about it in the past. He downplays it now. Don't go just by what one person from "Andre's camp" said. The words are all on record. You can't just undo the past by saying things that happened did not happen. Andre is a very classy guy and has always been the bigger man. He may say he didn't mind Prince using "Do me baby" but that isn't true. I've seen quotes from years back with Andre describing his hurt. Over the years he just realized it was pointless to argue about it and talking about it was probably causing him more backlash, so he just let it go. Especially after Prince's death, what's the point... The truth is Prince took advantage of Andre, Jesse Johnson and a lot of others. He stole "Do me baby" no question. He took Jungle Love from Jesse and left him out of the writing royalties. Both Andre and Jesse were hurt. Both downplay the damage caused now because of the time that has passed and because Prince has passed on.

I have always been a big fan of Andre Cymone, he's a great all around musician in his own right. What I think people tend to forget is that he was also a hot producer. He put singer "Jody Watley" on the map as a solo artist after leaving Shalimar. His first solo album "Living In The New Wave" blew me away. Loved his sound, and I'm sure I've told the story before of kicking myself because I had just missed meeting him after he had done a interview at KJLH radio station in Los Angeles for his first album. Thanks for clarifying some of that information. I did hear that information in an interview from Andre in depth. I don't want to reiterate, but it was basically about taking someone you love like a Brother to a certain point with his career. I believe personally at the time , I know this growing up pursuing my ambitions in the Entertainment field. It's always nice having someone around who is like family. The two were practically Brothers. Andre was really conducive for Prince's moral I believe at the time. Then it was time for him to evolve. From the interviews I heard, Andre wanted to have is own experience adjacent to his venture with Prince. I'am happy that he was there for his friend. That was really generous of him, looking out for his buddy. It's never easy to put aside your vision for yourself to support. When you know your potential,or better said have your own ambitions. Anyway, great to hear you set the record straight. Now that's keeping it real with your viewers. Prince would even respect that.

Thanks for clearing up inaccuracies about Andre and Prince's relationship. I was getting quite frustrated watching the last video because I'm a big fan of Prince and Andre Cymone and of that whole camp and been following him for years and I knew that that information was incorrect. What actually happened with the Time is that Morris, Prince and Andre knew each other in high school and played in a group called Champaign, that's how they met. Later on, Morris wrote a song that Prince liked which ended up being Party Up. Prince offered Morris an ultimatum, either $20,000 for the song or I'll get you a record deal and start your band. Morris opted for the latter, and this is in Morris's own words.

A family, a house to live in, supportive parents. Prince didn't have all those things but he had the talent. Andre had some talent but not like Prince and I think he to this day resents the fact that Prince made it farther than him.

Andre has been front & center in some of the charitable initiatives Manuela has done in honour and memory of Prince. Most notably a music room. Andre & his family took Prince in when Prince needed a place to stay for a reportedly good chunk of time. It is reported that Prince’s Mom knew whether Prince’s parents sent her money for food, but a big commitment on her part, Andre etc. I don’t think Prince would do Andre wrong at least intentionally. I would need to hear Prince's end of this story in order to fairly analyze this. Many musicians hire people for creative input, and it becomes the musicians legal property instead of the property of the creator. I imagine there are many reasons for this business practice. According to books I have read about the music BUSINESS, I believe Andre could have had a lawyer negotiate an agreement to have ownership or compensation for his creative input. We know that Prince was a solo artist under the Warner Bros. contract and as such, it was solely he that had the responsibility for getting the recordings done, promoting the music on tour, and covering the expenses that the record company recoups from any advances. I don't believe the people backing Prince in the bands incurred any of those expenses, and probably not the responsibilities that come with it; as such, maybe they were not entitled to as much of the proceeds they would have liked to have received. Also, they may not have been entitled because whatever they created while working for Prince might have legally become the property of Prince without some written special agreement, and who knows, out of generosity, Prince may have given band members credit when he was not even legally obligated to do so. Andre says he was not hired. Instead he said Prince asked him (Andre) to join the band, but I think Andre was more of a hired musician than he thinks he was because that is the way business and music law probably viewed him. Legally, he was not an equal partner in the band or in the business end of it which would have included management, accounting, recordkeeping, legal representation, and other overhead expense or any costs incurred from running a business. As Andre stated in so many words in that interview, "the breaking point is when you start to realize how the record business works, and you start to feel you aren't being compensated or given the recognition you think you deserve". I assume, Andre did not have legal representation or a mentor to help him understand what he was getting himself into. Someone needed to advise him early on what he needed to do to look out for himself before he devoted so much of his time to Prince instead of spearheading his own career.

I have read that Andre dropped out of high school. Prince stayed and attended courses in marketing, contracts etc. given by a teacher with experience in the music business.

If they were "non-adversarial" that's great. Still, I think if Prince were here, he would see things a bit differently on some things. The waters get muddied over time. I do however, think Prince & Andre were brothers & had such a long history that the Brotherly love didn't just go away. It depends even now, on who you choose to believe. If Andre didn't listen to Prince's music, I would think he had to not be swayed or unintentionally be drawn in the other direction to stay focused on his own career/creations. I'm glad for the response and I Agree 100 that The Truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I do know at one point in later years, Andre was at (invited or showed up idk), at one of Prince's shows & he sat onstage & Prince introduced him by name, reminded the audience of their early connection as kids/band mates & called him a friend. When all was said & done I think they did still have love for one another as a Real friendship should. That brings Joy to my heart! Much Respect to Andre (& for his input on the first three albums which cemented Prince in my heart) & as Always PRINCELUV4EVER!!!😁🎸😚🎶

I think you did s great job with both interviews. I think Andre Cymone is a great artist and it’s possible that now with Prince gone he found peace and dropped whatever bad feelings there may have been. The truth of the matter is there was a measure of distance in what was a “brotherly” relationship. Andre wanting to do his own thing is a good enough reason to leave but hearing allegations of song stealing or not getting credit for things has been said by numerous ex members. In the way that Prince always maintained that he wrote and did everything all the time makes it most likely that some of the allegations are true. How could this bunch of very talented musicians work tirelessly together but never ever write any of the material??? Not very likely. I think back to the little song snippet about “Andre Crabtree" that Prince used a couple of times and feel like there was a reason for that. Half of these “rumor” are Prince’s fault anyway for not speaking or allowing others to speak. And I say allow because we see the minute he passed they seemed to have found their voices. At the end of the day I think it was all family with Prince and his people and we all know his family can be,....there can be grief but there is also love. And love always wins.

My perception is that they lived as brothers and they had a sibling rivalry. I mean who doesn't have people in their lives that push them to be a better version of yourself and collaborate on projects? But down deep under the ego they loved each other. Prince went to the hospital when Andre's mother was very ill before she passed. Andre met Prince (with Larry Graham & their wives) on the elevator. Andre said something like, You gonna help carry these pizzas, man? 😊( he had a bunch in his arms going up to his mother's hospital room) . They smiled and Prince helped. The rest of the chatter is noise. 💜💜

Thanks, that was good. Prince had a lot of really musically talented people in his camp. Many of those people at some point had to part from him and have their own musical journey & experiences apart from his. It's nice to know there wasn't any animosity between them. All of them had a lot of talent & started out young. As you age you change, your thoughts, ideas,as well as desires change. You just can't have that many talented musicians, songwriters together that just stay together forever especially starting out as teens. At some point a person has to leave the comfort of family, friends, & the familiar to make their own way, doing there own thing having their own journey. Yeah prince made it really big & I'm sure it made a lot of them think on their overall all journey with him & apart from him. If you ask each of them concerning their own musical journey's they probably wouldn't change a thing. Again thanks for the correction. Enjoyed it.

One other thing, I've been in the entertainment industry since a kid. The studio stuff bands and friends jamming has been around for years. Sly Stone would listen for something he liked and record it, George Clinton did it it gets to the point where you don't know if that's you or not. They also did it with Jimi he would be so high all of it wasn't magic. That's enough I don't kiss and tell!

Thanks for the clarification however this is not new information. Andre has told his story And several interviews. I completely commend you for dedicating a channel to Prince however you really do need to do your research and your homework Because there are a lot of people here, myself included who are extremely well read in Prince history and we keep up-to-date with people that were close to him When they do interviews either print or video. Again no disrespect hear from me, I’m impressed with your channel I love your dedication to this awesome artist all I’m saying is if you’re going to say something you’re going to have to back it up with the research there’s plenty out there.

Andre wants to spin it to make it sound more pleasant than the break up actually was. Andre did a real detailed interview in Rock magazine bab back in 1984.

I get that ppl can make mistakes when reporting news on P. Granted, there are many stories out there that it's easy to get facts distorted. However (having said all that), I remain greatly disappointed in the 1st vid mainly bc the information was readily available. André did a 2+ hours interview w/Michael Dean and crew in @podcastjuice some yrs back and in 2016 after P passed away speaking very candidly this very subject. They are all really was excellent interviews! André was forthcoming and totally straight up abt why he left the band and about his own ambitions in developing his own music career. Also, I heard André do a live interview at Celebration 2017 (the year The Revolution performed) speaking again about this very subject and meeting O in school. Again, another great interview! Another issue w/ your video is I really thought André's involvement in the early years has been minimized; my man really got short changed! Mrs. Anderson's influence in support of Grand Central (and her direct involvement in supporting Prince for that matter) were grossly minimized. Again, check out Michael Dean's interview w/André Cymone and an interview w/a Minneapolis biographer, who went all in on Mrs. Anderson's role in the Uptown community and beyond. I really got schooled on this generous and ambitious woman! Did you know that Mrs. Anderson was so loved and highly respected that Prince went to visit her in the hospital shortly before she passed away? Word has it that P rarely (if ever) was known to make hospital visits. ( I don't claim to know anything!) Again, Andre lovingly recounts the details of this visit on @podcastjuice Again, super dope interview. No disrespect to you bc I feel that you do fab work overall. Your André vid should not detract from the totality of your work. Admittedly, I was disappointed on the André piece (but over it now) . I'm just glad that André's camp responded and your retractions were prompt. My man seems like a super, cool dude and deserves not to be reduced to just a footnote in the early P years and involvement in Minneapolis sound. Sorry 4 the rant. Still support your show!

I love this, you set the record straight. Even if Andre was initially annoyed, he would have gotten over it. Andre knew he had his own talent, and that trajectory was on its own route, not being Prince's sideman. Prince knew it too - that Andre needed his wings loosened and needed to fly out of the nest. I never believed those stories which mostly spring from 2 books - 1989s - Prince a pop life and that 2003 thing called Possessed by Alex Hahn which was a litany of disgruntled ex employees running Prince down. PS - Album reviews, if you could find them would you do Living in the new wave and Surviving in the 80s. The one song i really love is Kelly's eyes - has a Ray parker Jnr feel (Another favourite - another album or artist review - Raydio?)

When people pass away they are held in higher esteem dead than in life, mostly out of respect and the rest out of guilt. FACTS, but since its all about LOVING PRINCE in the now, I really dont care why.

Andre said the same thing in an interview in 2014 two years BEFORE Prince died, so he didn't change his story.

Andre wanted to be in a band, not Prince's band. Grand Central was the band. It wasn't Andre's or Prince's. It was the band. Andre didn't want for Prince he wanted to work with Prince.

Andre Cymone is one of the best bass players ..producers..ever..His Muse was his work with Jody Watley...".New Love" and more..He and Jody were a great musical team...I heard that prince assisted with New Love..

Andre didn't want to be in Prince's band in the first place. Prince really wanted him to be in his band. Andre's plan was to leave after dirty mind from the beginning. Watch Paul Peterson's blog where he interviews Andrew. This is what Andre said out of his mouth.

@@PrincesFriend Glad you know what happened and Andre's feelings better than Andre. I'm a little disappointed with your comment. You have no idea what private conversation Prince and Andre had to finally clear the air. Sounds like you are the one rewriting history. It's actually their story not yours. Why have an update from your original version if you don't believe what Andre's camp told you? I'm sure his wife contacted you to clear your misinformation up. You are basically calling Dre a liar. Not cool.
