Is it more aero the other way? 😂 I can confirm from countless tests, it makes zero difference. I have the older one without the air/wind vent part

@@markthrelfall3577 I'm not sure about the reasons, but that's what Stryd website says: thick part towards the shin. I had to double check that after watching the video, thought maybe I was doing it wrong all this time.

Yep, that was my first thought as well, it was up side down. I haven't tried wearing it up side down myself, unsure what it means for the data

Didn't mention why running power is so much higher..... Stored energy in soft tissues. I use a stryd, I can't imagine running now without it. If I run a parkrun by feel I set off at an "easy feeling" 330W. In fact I can only hold 290W for the duration so easing back to 290 at the start has me running at the right intensity. And holding back up hills where the power can easily spike to 400W is a game changer, people slip off the front but I come by them down the other side and haven't beaten myself up. I'm 56 with a current parkrun time of 22:20, a minute off my pb set this summer before an injury. My stryd has helped me train 4 minutes off my time in 12 months

Oh, for completeness, my running Critical Power is currently 285 W, one hour on a static gym bike at a "maybe calibrated" 160 W is about my limit

The idea that two bike power meters will vary so much they can't be compared only really checks out if you've got quite low end power meters...

My experience with using running power is that it is most useful if you run hills and/or have stiff headwinds but then race a flat course with no wind (for example). In other words, power can be more useful than HR when you run a course that is not your typical environment. This includes large heat or cold changes between run courses but (for me) it is not that impactful with regard to power. However, if you are running the same course for training, you simply need to find the power zones relative to RPE or HR as a benchmark occasionally. In that instance, the benchmark can be relative to HR or Power. As it stands, my experience indicates It is when you change your running environment that a power meter has useful information.

Thanks for the insight Joe. If you stumble on this comment, would you care to let us know if it's not useful for pacing? GPS estimated instant pace is rubbish, at least on my watch, just bumps up and down too much for being useful for pacing. How about paving with a power meter? It's a game changer in cycling ("almost cheating" they said when power meters can't out) so why not running power meters?

Suggestion for follow-up test of run power would be to do the run on a treadmill. Preferably one where you can enter weight height and so on. They usually give you an estimated wattage which is not calculated the same as as many on the watch. If nothing else you could see how consistent the run power meters are when speed/cadence is kept constant. Also cool to know if the run power is depending on HR in its calculations. Thus it would report lower wattage due to low HR in the beginning of the exercise section, compared to the end when the heart has "caught up" to the effort you are doing.

I went to power with both disciplines couple years ago and what I learned for myself is that using power over HR. Wattage range tends to be at the higher end of all my paces. Bit more humbling using watts

The other thing of note is that where you can compare cycling power from different power meters because cycling power is a standard thing, you can’t do this for running because running power is a calculation that each brand does differently. It’s not to say that running power isn’t useful, you just need to compare your own power to itself over time and keep using the same device to measure it

Running power is king. No lag like HR or pace with GPS on intervals. If you put your STRYD on the right way 😉, you won’t over cook efforts in to the wind.

Due to running and cycling having different demands on the body, it would be extremely difficult to compare rhe two. Best advice would be to do an FTP or Ramp test for both and obtain your zones for each discipline and train from there.

In August I ran a test Half Marathon at Marathon effort (fasted too) in 1:33 on a Saturday which Stryd wind recorded AVG of 239wNP 139 HR and 184 steps (92 cadence) next morning rode local time trial which curiously was exactly the same power / HR & cadence .....however I was trying harder. (I've found that HR is a less reliable metric) Normally I'd see running power slightly higher than cycling for the same perceived effort...fully agree apples and bananas. what is clear is an easy run is way higher power than an easy ride, and a really hard effort on the bike is way higher power than a run.

A problem with stryd run power is also that you can get a higer power reading without the power getting better. If you lose weight you most likely will run fater and get a higher power reading without the power actually getting better

Why not do an FTP test on both running and cycling power meters? - as a personal experience, my running power for an easy run is generally twice the power of an easy bike ride - using the Garmin run pod though. Aside from the difference in power, it’ll Also show the difference in Heart rates between running and cycling.

As commented Mark is wearing his Stryd backwards. In this way the wind is not taken into the measurement. But as you point out the power of running is not comparable to cycling. So in that way you did OK.

What do you think would this (roughly) relate to calculated calories burnt? E.g. running for an hour with 200 watts vs. cycling for an hour with 200 watts for the same person with average fitness / metabolism?
@Alex-kr7zr
@Alex-kr7zr Жыл бұрын
It should be the same as the power output is the same. Or am I wrong? But running 200w is a lot easier than cycling 200w because less muscles groups involved, recoil, etc.

Would it suggest if you are undertrained in one or other? I don’t use a power meter but Golden Cheetah estimates both running and cycling power and my 60 min power is 68% more on the run (Run Power: 272 W, bike 161W). I assume that’s due to not having hardly biked at all for 10 years, (last time I trained for triathlon in 2011 my bike FTP was around 270 ish).
@automotive474
@automotive474 Жыл бұрын
No, the power figures in running are generally higher than cycling. It's all an estimate (in running) but their formulas try to account for every bit of effort that one (typically) does while running, including: keeping up straight, and bobbing up and down, so definitely more power is "spent" running while it doesn't mean necessarily that you are a more natural runner than a cyclist if you see higher figures in your running power.
@automotive474
@automotive474 Жыл бұрын
Having said all that, your best bet too determine if you might be undertrained or inept in one discipline versus the other is old school: sign up for a race, do an honest effort and check out where you place relatively in each sport. If you can't or won't do that, look for charts that split people in cat1, cat 2 cat n, online, there are a few. See if there's a change in category from one to the other. Just remember, some people really are more apt to one or other sport, even pros, so just don't go out there hammering on every season because you think you simply must place well in both disciplines. If it was so much easier having a higher heart rate on the run only means that you need to paddle faster and go one gear lower on the bike.

I don’t think run power will ever be as useful as bike power because the lack of cooling that happens on a run can lead to much higher stress.

I'm just gonna be brutally honest here, you have some great videos on this channel and are obviously capable of creating useful and interesting stuff, but lately you're just feeding the algorithms, this is absolutely useless, 10 mins of nothing at all but braindead repeating of stuff that anyone who has ever ran and cycled with a device already knows. I for one would rather do something more productive or at least entertaining with that time and will be unsubscribing.

ok sssss. so why not make your own channel and try to get it as popular as this one. GTN provides for the masses - so people with all abilities from complete novices to multi gold winning professionals. I also don't understand why people announce their unsubscriptions. It is almost as if they want they channel to create a begging video with the presenters on their knees pleading, "Please sir, don't leave us. I implore you to reconsider. Think of my family and my starving children. How will we survive" 🤣🤣

I’m sorry you feel like that. We made this video in response to many questions regarding the topic. The fact of the matter is, there isn’t a ton to say about it. One is strain gauges and the other is purely using an algorithm. I’m sorry you didn’t feel it was up to our usual standards
