Can running with a power meter make you a faster runner? And is running power the same as power measured on a bike. Watch more to find out...

Great video! Well-balanced and presenting the upsides as well as the downsides. And I think it really helped that you had previously used power when cycling - it wasn't completely new to you and you drew some great comparisons between the two (running with power vs. cycling with power). Some additional points not fully covered (I felt) were: 1) Every power meter is a combination of external measurement and internal algorithm (to translate the measurements into wattage). Cycling power meters are no different than running power meters in that respect. 2) In the "early days", cycling power meters also differed in how they worked (what they measured, how that was converted into Watts etc.) Running power meters are still in the "early days" - we shouldn't be surprised that there are a few different methods out there (wrist-based, HR strap, foot pods, shoe soles etc.) - eventually we might expect to see convergence on a standard. 3) Even if the power readings differ between devices, that's not important as long as the readings are reliable and as long as we use relative numbers (rather than absolute numbers) for power targets (e.g. 90% of FTP/CP is relative to FTP/CP). 4) "Power calibrates RPE; RPE modulates Power" (Charles Howe). This is described (11:41-12:28 in the video) but only from a negative perspective of being a slave to the numbers and even ignoring the numbers during racing, rather than the positive perspective of being able to train and develop a better sense of RPE during training using feedback from a Power Meter. That said, it's great to see some time spent on this up and coming topic - keep up the good work!

One of the clearest video I found to understand power. What it is how it works and how to use it 👍🏻

Force times distance is work. Work is measured in units of energy. Calories per hour is probably the most accessible unit of power for most runners.

Thanks for a great video! I've used a Stryd for quite some time and for me the main benefit is pacing workouts on rolling hills so my effort level is right, as I live in such a hilly area, which it's brilliant for. You can definitely fall slave to it in a race though and miss moments where you should push as you point out, and I've found it pretty useless at judging effort on trails too. They're useful, but certainly not necessary if you've got a good handle on your perceived effort.

Awesome. Thanks Thomas. Do you actively train with power zones? Do you use a plan that has power zones built in? Just curious...

@@TheRunExperience I do try to, I always stick in the easy zone on my easy runs as you mentioned and I've been following power based plans simply because of the hills where I live I can't follow a set pace (and HR is too iffy for me) from a normal training plan so by using one with a power target I can follow it much more accurately. If you guys are thinking of power based plans in the future, I can see it as a growing market.

I’ve been running with power for about a year now. It is amazing and definitely worthy, however it doesn’t make you faster, it enables a ton of data during and post runs that can be used to improve your trainings. However it is all about the data and the time you need to invest to learn and translate it into training, so you can get its real value. If you go really deep into it, it can even replace (partially) in an affordable the well know VO2max test. Therefore, if run for you is only about the run and that is it, no data diving etc, I would not recommend it.

Good points Bruno. What power meter do you run with?

The Run Experience I use Stryd + iwatch. More than enough. We forgot to mention one HUGE value of a power meter, which is pace accuracy vs gps mainly on city centers or cloudy days. Because the power meter (Stryd at least) uses the accelerometer for pace, so it is mechanical and not digital, therefore even pace gets better seen in the watch, besides the power itself.

Isn't watching the pace to set a speed limit way more intuitive and easier to track? :D I dont really see the benefits of the powermeters...

Good question! When you're running on a flat road, speed is a great way to measure...but what happens if you're going on rolling terrain or false flats or extended hills? As most cyclists know, speed goes out the window pretty quick so you need something else to help quantify what you're doing...

@@TheRunExperience I can imagine using power and heartrate in a similar way as an indicator of effort and can be useful if taken in as pieces of a bigger puzzle. Ultimately, nothing beats getting to know your own body! One more note: in the end it is the pace and not the power that counts in the race (;

Is there any point in an 800m runner using a power meter in training ? It seems only longer distance runners are talking about these things. Nobody talks about them for fast track intervals for example.
