As a mechanical engineer,time has evolved,oil has evolved.now run in period is only for purpose of the bedding between piston rings and the cylinder walls.100 km of gentle riding is fine,an oil change at 150 km is highly recommended to take the metal debris out.The reason why the manufacturer is giving 1000km or upto first service is mainly because of the oil change.The differences between the smothness of the engine before and after the first service is shearly because of the type of oil.most of the manufacturer use conventional oil because of the cost and sudden oil change,after first service the engine will give a smoother performance with synthetic oil
