New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trail first run & first impressions review. While we were away in Chamonix we were lucky enough to get invited to the launch party of the first carbon plated trail shoe from the New Balance brand - the FUELCELL SUPERCOMP TRAIL. I popped the shoes on to check the sizing and I was surprised at how good they felt straight out the box. Ever since trying them on in Chamonix I've been really looking forward to giving them a run and today is that day. Let's lace them up and get out on the beautiful trails of Cornwall for my first run in the NB FUELCELL SUPERCOMP TRAIL!
Really hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

The SC Trail has worked out really great for me. I live in SoCal and I'm mainly a road runner but love to go out on the local trails minutes away from my home in a very hilly neighborhood. What makes the SC Trail so good for me is that it works and rides very well on the road. My neighborhood has lots of trails and roads crisscrossing each other and the SC Trail allows me to run both in one session with virtually no compromise. I guess what I really like about the SC Trail is how it feels like a road shoe that handles the types of trails I run very well - mainly dry and hard-packed dirt/gravel with some rocky hills and some forested areas. I'm not a hardcore trail runner by any means and can't even imagine running an ultra. The longest trail runs I've done are in the 13~15 mile range and that's enough for me, so I don't know how a shoe like this would do in 50~100 mile races although I think I would be comfortable in the SC Trail for leisurely trail runs up to around 30 miles in national parks or similar environments. I do think the SC Trail would be in the "West Coast" trail shoes category - better for relatively flat smoothened dirt/gravel trails in a more desert-like environment than mountainous and wetter environments of the East Coast and Europe. It does run small and feels narrow at even half-size up. The length is fine but the forefoot/toe-box area feels kind of constricted, which I don't mind since I prefer a snug fit and won't be running longer than 15 miles. For really technical trails with steep descents that are rocky, I do think the Xodus Ultra 2 and Peregrine 13 are better suited. And I can't see the SC Trail working out at all in wet and muddy conditions. It doesn't rain much in SoCal, but when it does, I do have the inov-8 X-Talon Ultra 260 v2 with its 8mm lugs. I still prefer the Xodus Ultra 2 for all-round trail running and Peregrine 13 for technical trails but the SC Trail is really fun and speedy. The Vibram Litebase outsole is much grippier than I thought it'd be and makes it feel like a nimble road shoe. I replaced the flimsy insole with the inov-8 Boomerang and that's a big improvement and adds even more of a soft cushioned feel, but it's so much thicker than the stock insole that the shoe feels even more constricted and tighter, which meant I had to look for thinner socks to wear. But, after a lot of experimenting and fiddling, I've got everything dialed in now and greatly enjoying a few trail runs per week (with one run that is 50/50 between road and trail) with the SC Trail. No one single shoe is great for everything but, for what I like to do, the SC Trail is very versatile and provides a very fun, exciting, and pleasurable ride.

Hi! I’m a 53yr old runner from south Texas in the US. My daily trainer is the NB Rebel V3. You turned me onto the NB Summit Unknowns and I LOVE them! I’m more into foam shoes rather than the carbon plated shoes but you’ve opened my eyes to a possible one in the future. Thank you for your uploads and content.

I’ve found the lockdown to be a bit sloppy, and the insoles grating, swapped them out for the inov8s. After about 100k in them I found that they tend to pronate. So they do feel great on easy trails but once it gets mucky, or technical, or it’s steep you face issues.

Yep. I used them in UTMB this year (I got a pair at beginning of August) and ended up eventually bailing on them at 80 miles. I knew going in that it was a risk as I had already tried to mod them by using the Inov8 Boomerang insoles (got blisters in stock ones), and swapped out the laces to try and get better lockdown. However, still couldn't get a good hold despite ending up branding my feet from the laces being so tight and feet on steep hills would just bash the front so screwed my toes - went a full size up on normal too (never have this issue in other shoes and use runners loop). For a carbon plated shoe with a decent stack they are pretty stable on technical stuff. I switched into Endorphin Edge at 80 miles and so much more comfortable but they aren't anywhere near as stable on techy stuff. Endorphin Edge area awful on durability front and the NB were far better. Both shoes great for certain things and both could be amazing. Saucony need to improve durability at least (I ripped off lugs, tore up the sidewalls) and NB need to sort out the fit.

Well done on the UTMB! The last mod I’m trying is silicon gel on the insoles to limit the sliding. If that doesn’t work I’m going back to the inov8 270s and the Wildhorse 8s!

@@JohnM-xr6chInov8 TrailFly 270s are my go to shoe for 50K and under. I was hoping the 280s were gonna be the 100 mile version of the 270s but they ended up being the worse trail shoes I've ever worn and just use them to walk around in or do easy road runs in them now. The NB I'll use for stuff without steep descents I think but most things I do have those. Need to take the uppers from the Saucony and stick on the midsole/outsole of the NB. Never tried Wildhorse but use to love the Kigers for short, dry stuff. Pegasus Trail were good training shoes. I also used to run in first versions of the NB Summit Unknown and their predecessor the Vazee Summit and they were fantastic shoes with great fit so I know NB can do it.

Awesome review as always. I’m a big NB fan. So thank you for the reviews. I feel that for the price and the specs the NB Summit Unknown V4 is just as good. So if you don’t want to shell out the big bucks, you won’t be disappointed with the the Summit Unknown.

Interested to see how they'll do on the long run. As someone who loves the Rebel V2 and V3, they both feel dead after 12ish miles on a long run.

I totally agree, the Rebel V2 super is amazing! 10mm is high for a trail shoe but it didn't feel that high when you're running in them 👍 Thanks for watching 🙏

Fixed the lockdown (which was a bit unsettling) with the R4A-approved Inov-8 Boomerang footbeds! And that makes this shoe work here in the Colorado Rockies so long as it isn’t too technical. Which is unfortunate, as most things here are technical. Salomon S/Lab Genesis is superior in nearly all respects for me, but good to see New Balance with a serious longer trail race offering.

Boomerang didn't help me in the UTMB and neither did changing out the laces for standard, non-stretchy ones. Went a full size up too but just couldn't stop my feet hitting the front on the steep descents (even ended up cutting into the tops of my feet from having the laces so tight!). Never had this issue before in a shoe and ended up switching to the Endorphin Edges at 80 miles (Endorphin can't do the technical stuff as well as the NB though but at 80 miles and my feet screwed I wasn't hitting anything fast and UTMB isn't like the NE of US (where I ripped lugs off the Endorphins testing them before taking them to the Alps for an earlier race in the summer - fixed up with ShoeGoo and did better than the Saucony rubber)

Great review, is definitely not for me but it looks like a nice shoe for people with narrow feet and easy trails who don't mind a big heel toe drop.

Hello Lloyd, thanks for the review. I currently run mostly 10-16 km on fairly hard-packed trails in Canada. I am fine with shallow lugs. My feet are very narrow. I use mostly Salomon SLAB Pulsar (the light grey original), Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra and Salomon Sense Pro 4. Have not tried a plated shoe yet. Between this NB and the Asics Fujispeed 2, which one do you think would best suit my needs and feet?
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 10 ай бұрын
I'd say the NB shoe would probably work better for your footshape 👍 I had to pull the Asics shoes really tight to try and get a good lockdown around my midfoot. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏

Love New Balance on both road and trail, sadly no wide fit on this model means I get to keep £200 for now. Lug did put me off.

Oooh nice! NB's FuelCell TC is my all-time fav road shoe (which sadly they don't make anymore). I HATED the new supercomp trainer (supercomp elites aren't bad, but are not meant for heavy mileage). I wonder how they'll compare to Hoka's new Tecton X2 :)

I was going to say "pity about the short lugs" but I suppose if you're running over much mud a carbon plated shoe isn't what you'd wear anyway.

The FujiSpeed 2 ran well but they still felt quite stiff because of the plate so prefer the feel of the NB shoe 👍

Is it the same size and fit as the similar silhouette Fuelcell Summit Unknown V4? They both look like knit socks with a fitted toe, but the Summit Unknown V4 has an overlay that makes the toe look narrower and stiffer. Do you feel that way?

A full size up? Man, maybe that's why I don't like these shoes. I bought my true size, way too small, went up a half size thinking the toe box would widen up, still feels too small and uncomfortable. Maybe I'll send them back again. I really wanted to like this shoe but that narrow toe box is just such a bummer for a shoe that seems capable of ultra distances.
@Run4Adventure

It definitely sizes up really small Cody! I'd say it still feels tight and narrow because it's still to small if you've only gone up half a size 🤔
