golondrina62 I was in college during this time and recall how Boy George was pretty cutting edge. Prince was also as well as Madonna. MTV was evolving into a big platform for new cutting-edge artists and the term VJ (Video Jockey) was becoming a House-hold term amongst tweens and teens. This was also a period when aids was not fully understood and was becoming an epidemic that many were terrified of. The U.S. was also going through a Cold War with Russia and there was fear of a nuclear strike. The summer Olympics held in LA was also popular that summer. Lots of memories come back to me of that particular year.

Very true. I was 11 when this aired, and it was at the very beginning of the AIDS crisis. Boy George was revolutionary in beginning the shift in perception of the gay population, and one of the reasons straight Gen X adults like me support gay rights. The Boomers, who are in their 30s and early 40s in 1984, are so perplexed by Boy George they really don't even realize he's gay in many cases. The first time my dad saw him on MTV, I knew as a 10 year old this was a man in drag, though I'd never seen it before. My dad believed he was a woman- literally- and wouldn't listen to my siblings and I.

Boy George was just plain beautiful. It's amazing how much has changed in 30 years in regards to how people see gay culture.
@mnpd311 жыл бұрын
The change in society's attitude toward gay culture is less about acceptance and more about the marketing of gay culture. People have accepted the marketed model which standardizes the difference between gay and "non-gay" persons as simply a matter of "sexual preference." In other words, there is no difference between John Straight and John Gay other than the gender of their sex partners. Gays are like everyone else; they just want to date, marry and settle down. The rest areas, truck stops, parks and strangers trolling for other strangers do not exist in the approved model. Neither does the explanation of why HIV has almost exculsively impacted the gay community --- the sheer promiscuity of it's members. A average never-married straight guy might have X-number of sexual partners by the time he is 30. His 30-year-old average gay counterpart may easily have a hundred times as many partners. I have nothing against gays --- I have a huge issue with propaganda and being told what I can think and believe based on what I know.
@davidmanhart111 жыл бұрын
I'm 49 years old.. Back then, gays were beaten to death for coming out of a gay bar. He handled the age he lived in with class. You could NOT say you were gay, even though it was obvious. This vid also reminds me of what a class act and all around good guy Carson was.

Johnny seems so calm and open minded. as a gay person I would feel so comfortable talking to him about just about anything. He had old fashioned values, but still allowed himself to see all kinds of things with an open mind. I miss him.
@swalk8139 жыл бұрын
+allthatjazzspaz95 Johnny's greatest gift was being able to ad-lib. He had in his mind a way the interview was going to go, but he knew who he was interviewing, and had the talent to go off-script and take the interview as far as it needed to go, and keep the viewer interested. He was a genius. If you were gay or straight, Jew or Arab, black or white, conservative or liberal, Johnny would be able to steer you into his interview.

He served in the Navy in WWII so He was exposed to Sodomy early on and then He entered show business in California so nothing like this would shock him. It's just weird that Boy George spent so much time trying to convince people that He wasn't gay and He dressed this way for "fun".

This interview is a great example of Johnny Carson's peerless talent of interviewing people. He is respectful, interested, and dedicated to allowing a guest to shine in their appearance on his show. In 1984, artists such as Boy George was still considered mysterious if not shocking to middle America. Yet Johnny is welcoming as well as helpful in the way he poses questions allowing George to express himself and show the audience that he is not from another planet, but a very talented artist who simply enjoys entertaining people. No late-night host, then or now can touch the true King of late night... Johnny Carson. Much Missed.

This was a very enjoyable interview and I love how Johnny interacts with him. Like Johnny said he's from a small town in Nebraska where this kind of culture wasn't known of. I recall when I first saw Boy George my first reaction was...wth. That's how it was back then when I grew up not knowing anyone that looked like this. When Boy George was on New Years Rocking Eve with Dick Clark back in the 70's or early 80's. I can still seeing my dads face, he didn't say anything but my dad was an old fashion guy, and I sort of knew what he was thinking. Thank you for this upload.

This is a great interview and Boy George is truly a fascinating human! I recently watched a way more recent 60 Minutes Austrailia interview and he just seems so "at home" in his demeanor, and he is very funny with his irony. I am glad I somehow stumbled onto Boy George! In this interview when he talks about everyone on tv being glamorous and selling us things, he says, "you know, out on the street no one really looks like that...it's all an illusion". That is powerful true because we do seem to get somewhat mesmerized by tv, video, movies, interviews, and these days, the ridiculous "reality" tv.
