After the initial shock wore off of us getting a camper other than a full fiberglass one, we decided it might be worth our while to compare the Lance with the Northern Lite while they're both still sitting in our garage.
In this video we compare the exteriors of the 2021 Lance 975 and the 2019 Northern Lite 10-2. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions about the differences. We tried to cover most everything on the exterior and will more than likely do an interior comparison soon too.
Thanks for watching!
Our 2019 Northern Lite 10-2 is still for sale, let us know if you're interested at runawayrosesadventure@gmail.com

Great video Todd, very good information. I agree with many of your observations. I bought a new Lance 830 Short bed with rear pop out tent in Florida back in 2009. Never had any major issues with it, it was very well built too. It had the round euro style bathroom. We liked it a lot. In 2012 I had an opportunity to buy my first NL 8'11". A gentleman had bought it, toured all Canada and then wanted to sell it at a very good price. I was really impressed with the overall quality the NL felt throughout. I kept it for 4 years and traded it on a brand new 2016 8'11. Fast toward to 2019 and I traded it on my current 10'2" LE Dry Bath. I'm thinking long term the NL will not give me any major grief, where the Lance eventually will have issues with the slide, seams and leaks. Both Nice units for sure and Yes the Lance beats it in storage but I just keep going back to long term build quality and will stick with my NL. Great comparison take care

Couldn't agree more on longer term thoughts. I'm closer to buying my first slide in, have you had any experience around any of the newer Bigfoot slide in campers? They seem to be very similar to the Northern Lite, more of a direct competition? Both 2 piece Fiberglass... Imo, I seem to like the Interior layouts of the Bigfoots better? Any thoughts? I'm looking specifically at the Bigfoot 10.4 with the Dry Bath in the middle of the unit, kitchen to the back, with sink at the rear...smaller dinette.

I've had a northern lite. They're a giant bathtub when, not if, you get a leak. I've also taken out both corners with my trailer tongue smoking the rear jacks. That was a significant reconstruction, albeit good as new in the end. I'd hate to think what ripping the lance open would entail

I live fulltime in my 2018 Lance model 850 no slides. I didn't want slide outs due to extra weight, cost, access to toilet when slide is in and maintenance. My Lance truck camper has held up well through extreme cold temperatures and deep snow. Made a few mods and improvements. Minor issues with appliances but nothing I couldn't repair or replace on my own. I do really like the Northern lite campers. Either way both are decent campers and comes down to personal preference for layout, design and style.

You make a valid point with the acrylic windows - letting the mosquitos in when shutting the windows for the night. That's a showstopper in BC Canada. Suppose a quick blast with a leaf blower would buy you some time. I'll also add, that I'm mulling over a 2017 northern lite (last of the rear dinette), the fit and finish has not changed since my 1998 but the price sure has. 20 years later and they're still using the same OLD bits and bobs... kinda sad

We looked at lance when picking our unit and probably liked it second best, but I'm a tall guy (6'2") and the cabover in particular was just too short for me. I couldn't sit up in bed. We wound up going into an arctic fox 811 and fell in love. It's heavier, but the arched ceilings and taller cabover make a huge difference for me. If you're a taller person, it might be worth checking out for you too.

Having been a NL owner, I can tell you the quality is outstanding. I cannot speak to the Lance because I have not owned one. However, a friend of mine had one and after seeing mine they sold their Lance and bought a NL. They live in Alaska and spend their winters in their camper here in the lower 48 and summers in Alaska, all in the truck camper. Drive back and forth to Alaska twice a year with the camper on the back of a dusky and then tell me which one is better quality. Not bashing Lance at all as they make a good camper but depending on your use case, they do not stand up to the NL.

There is no comparison in quality which is why the NL has a 6 year warranty. Both nice campers but the NL will still be rocking in 10 years. This is a truck camper so door height...meh! Awesome overview of both -- there was a leaning obvious throughout the entire video that you do like the Lance a bit better which is fine But all importance is the entire cost my friend what is the blank blank cost of each one that's muy importante amigo..! I'm totally out priced anyway it's fine I'd have to buy used and that's already a house payment more than I could buy anyway.. recently I saw that the 2020 Northern Lights look awesome but I think it was like 79,000... that's holy cow man it's it's all just not possible for me.. I'm very interested in one but I'm dreaming I don't think I have 10% of that kind of money in the first place.. And I've got to assume the new Lance is probably more so I'm guessing 85...?? Congratulations to all those people out there who are able to buy such a thing.. I'm basically homeless and hoping for always a hand-me-down in life and you know the old saying nothing in life is free so.. I'm waiting for heaven and all its mansion and decor and all that offers because Earth is just not affordable I'll Google the price of the cost on both of the comparison but you did a good job in your presentation but knowing how much it cost is important between the two

I use to fly small planes and that’s a must to clean and polish them with Pledge and if you don’t you will have to replace your windshield and that’s a grand or more to replace it. Iam sure the camper window won’t cost no where close to that price !

I think this was a very fair comparison of the two units. I clearly understand that you compared truck campers you own--the 2019 Northern Lite to the 2021 Lance. You pointed out a few things that a casual person wouldn't know unless they spent time with each unit. The hatch vents, gutter, truck electrical cables, and width of the brackets for the dully was a big surprise. Also the door to the camper is HUGE. It would have been nice to see the actual basement storage of the Northern Lite and Lance. I know the basement Lance Storage is inside the unit but for a true apples to apples comparison this could have been included.. If you include the total basement of the Northern Lite, how does the overall storage of the Northern Lite compare to the overall storage of the Lance. I'm surprised at the size of the rear awning of the Northern Lite. The brochures say it is a 7 foot awning but your measurements of only 6 feet indicate that there is a bit of marketing going on! Perhaps Northern Lite is measuring the distance of the Awning rail. The Lance says it is 7 feet and your measurements confirm this. It appears you have 200 Watts of solar on the Northern Lite but did not indicate how much solar on the Lance. The newer 2021 Northern Lites have a few more features. For example, the Northern Lite's Limited Edition has an Automatic Power Slide. The slide is only 10.5ft vs the 12 ft slide on the Lance. The Northern Lite 2021 Limited Edition also comes with 2 Solar Panels each at 185 Watts (total of 370 Watts). The Northern Lite 2021 Special Edition only comes with 2 Solar Panels each at 100 Watts (total of 200 Watts). I think the According to the brochures, Lance has a capacity of 200 watts of solar. I can't wait to see your opinion of the interior of the units. You might consider drawing a few comparisons to the 2021 Northern Lite units when it differs from your 2019 unit when comparing to the 2021 Lance.

The First, Middle, and last thing that needs to be said when comparing these two campers, one is a "Molded Fiberglass" (Northern) and one is a traditional "Stick Built" Fiberglass over frame Camper (Lance). Within just the last couple of years, with the implementation of Azdel, Vacuum bonding over Aluminum Frame, Aluminum roof trusses, and Composite flooring (this ones huge), traditional built (Stick Built) campers have finally surpassed the quality of Molded Fiberglass campers, FINALLY! The problem is only a few mftr's are implementing all these new modern building techniques, and unfortunately Lance isn't one of them. Head to toe, NO WOOD in the construction is what we are after.

Do you think the increased gap between the overhead bed and the top of the truck will i pack the fuel mileage?
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 3 жыл бұрын
So far our mpg's have stayed about the same with both the campers. I don't think it make much of a difference but I like the look of a lessor gap between the truck roof and camper. Thanks for watching!

I would also like to know how you get those campers in the garage? how tall are your garage doors? They look to short to pull in with the truck? I ask because my door is 11' and its 8" to short to pull the camper in with the truck. I would like to know how you pull them in your garage. Thank You

@Stinger45, funny you should say that. We released the interior comparison last week and in the video just before that we talked about the size of our garage. You can check those videos out, here's the interior one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKKwn2megaeUkMk and here is the one that talks about our garage size: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJzSeYqQermBeJI , Hope that helps! What is the price on the Lance and northern lite
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 3 жыл бұрын
I would say they are roughly in the same price range, depending on your options. The retail now as opposed to when we bought one last year is quite a bit more and I think that is due to shortage of parts used to make them. I'm not sure about that but it is just an assumption. We got our 2021 Lance 975 for for around $47,900 and here's one on Southland RV's website for sale: www.southlandrv.com/product/new-2021-lance-975-1417457-30 As I said, a new Northern LIte is in the same price range.

My biggest two questions are about weight comparison and cost comparison. My impression is fiberglass is lighter and cheaper. True?

Is there a weight difference.??
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 3 жыл бұрын
@pjf yes there is, that's something we should have mentioned. The northern lite dry weight is approximately 3,425 lbs and the Lance is approximately 4,600 lbs. Thanks for pointing that out!!

I have a question for ya...Do you think I'll be able to haul a Lance camper ( smaller one maybe ?) On my ford 150 , 8 cyl , 5.0 trintron motor , long bed , 4 door , Truck ? Thanks ! I wanna go take a look at them ..just don't want to be told by a salesman that I can...when maybe I can't ! Can one person take the camper off the truck ? ( a girl ?)
@RunawayRoses
@RunawayRoses 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tina Scott,. Sure anyone can take the camper off the truck, it just takes practice. As for your truck you need to see what your payload is and find a camper that weighs less. Half ton truck payloads are typically not very high so you would have to have a light weight camper. Some of the pop up truck camper are good on half ton trucks. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

Try looking at a Lance 650 and check it's weight. Some people put those on half ton trucks.

Artic Fox is a great competitor to Lance, in many way and even some ways better than a Lance. I ahve no dog in the hunt just sayin. Artic Fox has a better winter package by far.

I got a 05 Bigfoot 10.6 truck camper and any camper that’s is not built like a Northern Lite or a Bigfoot truck camper. They will not last and will rot to the ground and I have seen Bigfoot TC 25 years old and look like new and the other capers on every corner and every seam they will leak . If they are put to gather like a boat. I just am so surprised that money can make you talk about a Lance or Artic Fox and put it up against a northern Lite and they are number 2 in fiberglass 2 piece construction and Bigfoot truck campers have been number 1 ever since they hit the market and the belly of the best is so much better because you can take the bottom out to fix pipes that froze whe owners did not winterize it properly and get to up grade like the tanks that came lose.

Great video! I think it's pretty clear that the Lance is vastly better than the outdated Northern Light. I get the whole 2-piece thing, but the look of it simply doesn't appeal to me. And that short door is just ridiculous. At 6-1 myself, that's an immediate deal breaker for me. What are the widths of the doors though? I'm also not a fan of acrylic Windows. Now let's see someone do an in depth comparison of a new Lance with a new Eagle Cap! The 2020+ Eagle Cap would be my first choice for a new TC (1200 model). Just need a truck with a 6,000lb +!payload capacity! Lol
