This looks like a great dvr for a ground station - it auto starts recording. the only downsize might be that you have to stop it manually - it would be great if it would detect power loss and save the video itself (big cap etc)

I will give that a try. Only downsdide is you have to stop recording, take the sd out and put it in a gopro or something similar. But that's fine for the use case that you only wanna use it when the drone crashes (even though mine is crashing min 1x per battery because I am a bloddy beginner xD)

Do you need a video transmitter? What if you just connect video-in with, say, a miniDV camera. Just have the dvr record with the button?

Video transmitter is not required if you just want to record onboard.

Could I use this for non drone purposes? I'd like to attach this to a camera module to capture video. So in the difference here would be that video would be connected to a transmitter. The video would just end with the runcam.

Yes that would be OK. No need for the transmitter. Just connect the DVR to the camera.

I recently bought the Eachine Pro DVR....disappointing, it was very noisy, even when I powered it with a 1S Lipo direct. The other thing is, like this one it doesn't keep the time / date stamp running, so none of the files are date stamped, very annoying. Recording quality looked okay though, can it capture 16:9 files? Is VGA 640 x 480 4:3....Or 16:9..?

Only records VGA which is 4:3. None of the DVRs I have tried can date the files correctly which is very irritating. Pity about the Eachine, I was considering one too

Not really, all the DVRs I'm using are in goggles or screens and all seem to be identical and all poor quality. The Headplay DVR does offer HD, D1 and SD aspect ratio. The Commander goggles is only D1. Always interesting to see new ideas and products coming out on the market :) I think if you solder it to the the video out on some FCs (compatible with Betaflight OSD) instead of directly to the FPV cam, you can get also OSD overlay :) Interesting option even i can't find myself a use for it but probably helpful for some specific situations! MJPEG is a pity encoder though :/ Happy nidweek and and happy flying :)

Does anybody know if it's necessary to add a amplifier circuit (transistor) in order to get a eletrect microphone working on this dvr? A friend of mine is facing problems with only an eletrect, resistor and capacitor circuit without amplifying. My Eachine vtx works properly without any amplifier.

That would be an interesting way to record some onboard video from my 50 gram long range FPV Cessna. I think 3.5g would be the absolute limit of extra payload, and my flight time might suffer with the extra quarter of an amp.. but I might give it a try. Thanks for posting. As a footnote, I aborted the purchase, as Runcam again did their dirty sneaky trick of bumping the price up at final checkout stage.. nah, giving it a miss now.

Hi Andrew a slightly off topic Qtn : A friend wants to put a camera in a bird nest box hard wired to screen in the house. He wants to be able to record too. I'm sure this would do the job nicely. Your thoughts on this ?.

Not at all waterproof and low resolution. Better to record on a set top box connected to the screen.

That's a strange product. Why would you record SD on board on a micro quad where every gram counts? On the other hand this is probably the best video quality you get before mounting a HD camera
