Beautiful bowl Brendan, very well done. Maybe you can decorate a small disk to insert in the bottom of the first bowl. Take care, Carl
@baconsoda9 жыл бұрын
Carl Jacobson Thank you Carl, I've been thinking of inserting a disk to finish the bowl and then do my son's name in Ogham Runes on the bottom so that he won't cry when he finds out his sister got one... he's only 31. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Mike Waldt Thanks Mike, i really enjoyed doing this when I started to understand what I was supposed to do. I'll be doing a lot more of this type of work and I'll post videos of it too because it's not difficult but can be effective on a piece of wood that's not highly figured. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Hello Brendan, Thanks for the mention. The first bowl with the hole was an opportunity to make a feature:-). The finished bowl is absolutely beautiful and wouldn't look out of place in an art gallery. A lot of people told me you were a "quare artist" and this just confirms it .I think you got the finish just right. I think a high gloss finish wouldn't have worked as well. Ricky's winning piece was amazing. The standard of turning in our club is very high and has pushed me onto things I never thought I was capable of. I really think it's time you started uploading wood turning videos for the benefit of all. See you soon. Best wishes, Alan.

Alan Simpson Thank you Alan, I'm going to try to plug the hole with a thick disk and then finish the bowl with my son's name in runes on the back so that he can't cry about his sister getting her own bowl. Michael and I spent over 2 hours setting my saw up for 22.5 degree cuts so I've got lots of kindling for the stove. I made 4 rings out of scrap mahogany which I will glue together tonight and turn tomorrow. It will be my prototype but, as you probably know, it might end up better than the main piece. I kinda like segment cutting but the gluing is a real pain and I'm having problems getting the pieces to glue square to each other. Maybe different wood will be easier to use. I should probably change my saw blade to one with smaller, and more, teeth. I might just do that on Tuesday. Best Wishes, Brendan.

baconsoda Hi Brendan I bought a Freud Thin Cerf Glue Line 30 teeth 10" blade for my table saw. It cuts nice and clean, untill I got a Kickback and it through the teeth out by 0.12mm. But it still cuts well. I prefer the Bandsaw and sanding disc to get my segments. Can't share any more secrets untill after the competition :-))) but don't hesitate to ask.
@baconsoda9 жыл бұрын
Gordon Millar Thanks Gordon. I'm going to see Albert and Graham Mason on Wednesday whose business is saw blades so I'll see if they have that one. From what I hear they have everything and can also fix everything. I want to get a couple of teeth braised onto my table saw blade which is no problem, apparently. Out of desperation, I tried my B&Q MacAllister, cheapie-ish, compound mitre saw with it's coarse, 24 tooth blade, and it worked beautifully!! I couldn't believe the cuts I got with very little fuzzies on the edge. When I bought the saw I was very impressed at how well it was set up and how it has performed since but I didn't think it would cut small segments accurately. i am going to use it because I don't have time to wait until Wednesday afternoon to cut segments and I have spent 4 days making my prototype rings which I then butchered with my thicknesser because I didn't know I should have glued sacrificial timber to the sides to get the snipe out before the ring got cut. I'll know for the next time but this was my first time using a thicknesser except for a few practice cuts on long timber. I don't know if I'll be doing much more segmenting. Best Wishes, Brendan.
@gordonmillar9989 жыл бұрын
baconsoda The way I sand the rings is to hold the first one against a 300mm sanding disk on the lathe or stand alone disk sander. Then glue it onto a sacrificial block, mounted on the lathe. Then hold the sanding disk against the rough face of your ring, to sand it smoth. Then repete with other rings.
@baconsoda9 жыл бұрын
Gordon Millar Ah, thank you. I was using a belt sander and then wondered about making a sanding disk for the lathe. I'll do that this afternoon.

Very nice piece Brendan. I learned those techniques from Martin also, as I am color blind also, so decorating needs to be done without color. You have a very interesting piece there and thanks for sharing. Fred

Fred Graber Thanks Fred, I liked doing this because it gave me a chance to try decorating without making a whole load of colour faux-pas. I am definitely going to try more of this and use an angle grinder to be a bit more aggressive with the carving. I'll make videos of anything that turn out half decent. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Oh man, that bowl is absolutely amazing!! I love the runes, and the burning and gilt cream just make the piece pop. Excellent work Brendan. I'm excited to try out gilt cream on some projects myself, just ordered some yesterday.
@bmacwoodturning20359 жыл бұрын
Zac Higgins Thank you Zac. Go easy on the gilt cream because it is very invasive and will leave a big smudge if you just put it on your finger and start rubbing it on the bowl. The only way to get rid of the smudge is to sand it off because the gilt is extremely fine and gets well into any spaces, however microscopic. I found the best way to apply it was with a piece of cloth folded into a pad and barely touched on the cream in the jar. I ran the lathe at a slow-medium pace and touched the pad to the work very slowly to try to prevent a big deposit on the initial spot I touched. It is easy to add a little more several times than try to spread out a big deposit of gilt. Use the cream after any oil and before any waxes. Remember, little is more. The cream may seem expensive but you use so little it lasts a long time. If I outlive my little jar, I'll be happy enough. Best Wishes, Brendan.

BMac Woodturning Thanks for the tips on the gilt cream Brendan. I have a feeling you just saved me a lot of hassle!! I'll let you know how it goes once I use it. I have a platter project that I'd like to do for Mother's Day this year that I plan to try it out on.

Just passing through, congratulations! Thanks for turning us on to Martin's Bazaar! I love those pendants and rune bowls are awesome things! Do you have special stones for them? These are from the Viking era? Someone gave me some rune stones in a bag as a gift because I made a crack remark about needing a crystal ball. So they sent me some rune stones! They are supposed to be an ancient diving tool! Actually I thought it was a cool gift to receive! I know there was a big deal about stones with holes in them being prized as well. These rune bowls are spectacular! I have a pedestal bowl sink and I wonder if a rune bowl with the hole would make a nice sink basin in one of my bathrooms. Hmmm. Have to check out this option. I have a glass sink handmade why not a wooden handmade sink? We wash and use cutting boards all the time. This would be for a sink that wasn't used that often. A guest room. Another option to consider perhaps when marketing those bowls. In the US those kinds of sinks are hot stuff!

+PENFOLD CARPER Thanks Andy, I am going to plug the first bowl and give it to my son because the competition piece went to my daughter who helped me with Rune examples. In the end I abandoned the proper Runes because they just didn't look as good as I wanted them to or as I could make them. It was a fun piece to make and I'll try more of this decoration thing. Probably burn the workshop down but it's all learning. Best Wishes, Brendan.

That is a beautiful Bowl Brendan, a real piece of art . As a save for the first bowl I think I would turn a spindle stem with a foot on the bottom and make the top of it fit in the hole in the bowl bottom. also maybe a cone/finial to fit on the inside of the bowl, just a thought. All the best Tony

Excellent! I think if you were shooting for a ruined bowl the beautiful first was really the answer. Was that your daughter with the pond on her allotment who's always making tea in the shed in stead of getting the garden work done? I saw your remarks on her page, and I think I saw your face in hers. When I make pie I use a fork along the rim of the crust and I guess that's what you meant by pie-rography, not really sure, but that was some nice looking wood work. I'm not sure what I'm saying in the pie ruins, but I hope it's nothing indecent O_O

tblbaby Thank you. That girl on the allotment isn't my daughter but I maybe speak to her like she is one.... Oh No! The age thing again. I got examined by a 15 year old doctor a couple of weeks ago but the worst part was the 13 year old nurse who was helping him.. Her name is Katie Lane and she looks like her Dad who had an angular type of face like mine so Katie has a certain similarity in structure. I bet your pies taste a lot better than mine. Best Wishes, Brendan.

tblbaby Sadly, I'm not allowed an allotment. It's a rule. I'm barely managing to keep a single geranium plant alive in my flat, and my seeds would keel over and give up life as soon as they were tall enough to realise whose windowsill they had sprouted on! :) However, I do make a lot of tea as a method of procrastination.
@tblbaby9 жыл бұрын
That's a shame Oonagh, but it sounds like you were trained more in the methods of ancient human sacrifice than gardening. That's pretty entertaining and you can probably get more food from murder than nurture, truth be told. You can always trade meat for potatoes and greens, so don't fret. Making tea is obviously most important. I think you'd be deported probably if you couldn't manage that. Good to meet you, we've heard good stuff from your dad :)

tblbaby Making tea (and, to a lesser extent, coffee) to a reliable standard is a skill that should be taught to all people intending to take up a job in England or Ireland. Being able to make a round of drinks in work is vital to good team spirit! Good to meet you to! :)

Where are you selling the pens? I have to buy a birthday gift this June around the 15th for somebody and I think they would treasure one of the pens. This person adores stationery items. I was thinking a wooden chest with a pen maybe? Desk blotter? I need you're website name please Father Tattie! I did something really stupid by putting a GoPro around my head trying to compete with Dale and headed toward the pond out back to film a Crane bird (they're very large water fowl) and I fell, lol, with the GoPro strapped to my head and grabbed the reeds in the pond which slashed open two fingers! Six stitches later...geez. So while I am laid up here in bitter agony I am going to do what any reasonably insane person would now do, SHOP!
