your software (linux distro) and your hardware (hifiberry) fully support hi-res files so I recommend u ditch the mp3 and rip off your CDs to flac 16 bit 44Khz resolution; and to really push the system to the max get some hi-fi digital audio tracks 24bit-192khz from Dr Aix records or Chesky Records, couple the system to some pro headphones and you're into digital audiophilia with both feet

It does not matter, as the very basic hifiberry he used, utilize Pi I2S, which is driven by system oscillator, which is far from 44/48 proper ratio. So, a more advanced DAC hat is needed to get some advantage with lossless data.

David excellent video, I have previously purchased a Raspberry Pi 2 plus the HiFI Berry DAC+. I have it connected to a External NAS drive and it's serves as my daily music player. I have to admit I love the look of the Raspberry Pi official screen and I will be looking at that as an "upgrade". Just a small side note I run my Pi via a USB plug, so I would think that maybe your screen isn't getting enough "juice" from the powerbank. I chose the DAC+ as it has full onboard RCA jacks :-)

I just put together a similar player, but ended using two RPi, one for the player and one for the touchscreen, accesing the player using a web browser. I am using a HiFiberry DAC + hat and feeding the output through my vintage Sansui receiver. Playing only flac music files. The quality of the sound is wonderful. Your video have been very helpful.Thanks a lot !

So glad I found your video (and so glad you pressed “record”!). New to RPi, I’m hoping to build something similar, but had no idea what software to use, and how it would all go together. I got an old pi B+ to boot last night, and have a zero 2w and touchscreen arriving this week, and your video gives me a roadmap and the confidence to take on this project. Thanks for making and posting this video

How do I add music to the Rune Audio Library? I have a Raspberry Pi 3 B with a Digi+ Pro card HAT. I want to hook up a CD Player to rip the CD and a SDD to store the music. Can someone please point me at documentation or suggest how I rip the music to store in the Rune Audio Library (if reasonable am willing to pay for some consulting) really appreciate any help. Would love to be able to correspond/talk with someone to get going. Thanks!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 6 жыл бұрын
You will need to use a PC (or Mac if you must) grab a copy of 'Exact Audio Copy' put a CD into your PC and the software will pick up all the meta data and album art. Store it all on a drive and if you plug that into the USB of your Rune Audio player and it will either auto update the database or you can click 'update MPD'
@sweiss042
@sweiss042 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. This seems to imply to me - that the PC will rip the music and that the music files must be imported into the Rune Library as a separate step. If the Music is stored on the PC where is the Rune Library and Music kept? Is the idea that I will rip the music to the USB Disk, plug it into the Rune Player, hit update and then the Rune Library will be updated and I keep the disk plugged into the Rune Player until I need to add more CD where I will unplug and plug back into the Windows PC to rip more music onto it? Thanks - sorry to be dense, just want to be sure of what I am doing. Really appreciate the help and advice! I am wondering if an alternate approach will work. Use Exact Audio Copy as you suggest on my PC but then share that folder using SAMBA so I don't have to plug and unplug the device. Thanks and regards!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 6 жыл бұрын
You are right, you would keep the music on the SSD/HDD that you put in the USB. It would not add it to the SD card on the Pi. You can absolutely add a SAMBA share or other network share to Rune. I think it is under network sources. I suggest 'Exact Audio Copy' just because it is one that I have used in the past, lots of options available for backing up your CDs.

Hi David, well, after many hours of playing around and twiddling this setup, it appears that the RuneAudio is NOT compatible with the Raspberry 3B+ Sadly. It simply does not recognize the SD Card or image. So, anyone out htere who has the 3B+, save your time and maybe just write to Rune to update the image for compatability. I would however like to add that the video is great and really does a good job of guiding you through the steps of installing. Much appreciated.

I'm a little confused. You format your sd card and then burn the latest RuneAudio image to the card. Hence there is no system software anymore. RuneAudio does not supply a system as far as I recall or am I missing something here? According to your video, the Raspberry Pi 3B+ will run with the Runa image only. Can you confirm that? as it doesn't function for me according to your vescription. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the run audio image is the entire operating system. Essentially what rune audio provided is an operating system with the audio frontend.

I have to ask, How did you get the runeUI to work on the PI itself? I have looked online for days and can't get an answer! And all the other tutorials have you control runeaudio through a PC or a phone... I wanted to have runeUI to run on the pi like you have so i could make a makeshift hifi component, can you tell me what you did in more detail? You probably explained it well in the video, but i can't even get past the part where you format the partitions, i have 3 instead of 2 and always get an error :/ So: 1- could you tell me exactly what you did to make runeUI run on the pi itself instead of on a website? 2- if i ever get that to work, would it work with another screen instead of the official screen that you used? (this other screen would be touchable too, but would plug into the HDMI port instead of the display port) By the way, i am using a raspberry pi model B+, so that might be the problem... Anyway, thanks for the video, you got a subscriber!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think it is likely because you are using a B+ (Great board still, I use one for most of my projects). The RPI2 and RPI3 RuneAudio image (OS) has the stuff for outputting the UI to a HDMI built-in and as far as I know the other images don't.

Hi! thank you so much for this tutorial, and i was wondering if i could ask you this question:I ordered a kit that comes with a micro sd card already with raspbian on it, and all I have to do is put it onto the pi (or install it). Do I nesscarily need to have a blank sd card in order for this project to work?And if not, do I simply just burn runeaudio to the micro sd card with raspbian on it?
@DavidWatts

You would wipe your SD card, with SDformatter - www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ then put the RuneAudio image onto it with sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ or whatever image burning program you use. Then boot your Pi with the card and it takes care of the rest.

You pointed out at 4:26, that the power bank and bluetooth speaker was for portability. Therefore i comment on, the not so portable part of this setup. plus the quality output still comes out of the LG music flow, hence it would be wiser to invest the capital in a greater High End portable speaker.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 7 жыл бұрын
You are quite right, if portability is your main concern then you would approach it differently. As you probably saw I had a speaker and amp setup so the high definition audio from the DAC board on the RPI works well. It isn't cheap but it sounds good and the ability to control if from anywhere in the house is quite nice. Were I to do it again I would have picked a cheaper Pi and maybe even go without a screen (although I do love the screen)

I don't mean to be negative but nearly 300 euros of parts to build a raspberry-powered mp3 player might be overdoing a bit. These are all off-the-shelf, reasonably expensive components which make it a bit out of reach for most hobbyists. Besides that it's not overly compelling watching you put in a few screws and copy an image onto an SD card. Sorry for the thumbs down :-(
@DavidWatts

You could make one without user interface (the touchscreen) instead using your smartphone or computer to remotely control it over your home network , using the internal audio output (not very nice) or some USB sound card (better, possibly cheap). Then you'd be spending money for the Raspberry Pi, the sound card and the SD card, and you'd be not even hitting 100€ mark.

wouldnt it be easier to use an old tablet or even a smartphone and just convert this system into an android or IOS-app. If you combine the total cost of a RPI-screen and an RPI, you end up spending at least 100dollars, or even more. If you buy an old android device from craigslist or ebay, pay a significantly lower amount of money. Additionally, you have an battery onboard, which makes this easier.

Do you just mean cheaper rather than easier? I think an old tablet would work well as an audio device to play your music library. Rune Audio is aimed at people who want a a fairly high spec (sorta like audiophiles, not that I am one) audio solution, accessible over a web interface with the ability to add hard drives worth of music or streamed over the web. The screen is not necessary, you can use a web interface to control it through your phone. I like the touchscreen on the Pi, it is nice to have the album art displayed, it also looks nice with my setup.
