Thank you for this awesome discussion of the white raven and his symbolic meaning! It’s strange, but while I’ve never had the privilege of seeing one IRL, the white raven as this very archetypal, mythical motif is one that’s come to me, over and over again, ever since a very strange spiritual encounter I had with Crow (who himself holds deeply spiritual, ancestral connections for me), right around the time I became Heathen, now a good many years ago. However, I never knew what to make of this constant reappearance of the white raven upon my spiritual journey. Your discussion of what he means spiritually helped shed a great deal of light on this matter for me, and is very much appreciated! Thank you! Best of luck to you in your own creative, spiritual work with Raven!

The White Raven as an Earth-shaking event that nobody saw coming is also called a Black Swan, or the return of the Dragon King. For me, the image in visions of dramatic change in ways we could not imagine or foresee is that of a dragon. And indeed, it is GuanYi riding the dragon to reset the Earth in ancient Chinese lore, protecting the sanctity of life and removing those who do not honour this sanctity and abuse nature or kill their brothers and sisters.

I dreamt of a white raven last night and landed on your video. I appreciate your teaching. Ahehee'. Also, I am Dine’ and often role my eyes when people say "native american" stories, myths, teachings, etc. because "native american" is a made up generalization and we are hundreds of peoples connected to many different lands. Thank you, so interesting ! The white raven is also in Greek mythology, he was the "eye" of Apollo to see the world and come back to inform him. One day he saw the lover of Apollo cheating on him and came back but said nothing. When the god realized the raven didn't told him, in punishment he turned his feathers in black. That's as you said about the broken relationship (twice in this myth, as ancient Greeks always did - evoking twice the main concept). Raven are very clever social animals and close to humans as well, even though they can eat their deads. I had a dream about a big white raven landing on my arm, it was years ago but it meant a lot to me and now, thanks to you, I clearly understand his symbolic :)

I'm surprised you didn't mention the parallel to Prometheus, I think that's the most obvious one. I made the connection between Prometheus and the white raven as the harbinger of the New Age, the Aquarian Age - something which we may see in our lifetime. Also, do you know about the raven paradox/Hempel's paradox? The white raven signifies something impossible, or at least what the western intellectual mind deems to be impossible, but now all sorts of "impossible" things are being revealed to us such as in quantum physics, and the limits of modern society and our thinking and lifestyle is deconstructed.

actually, in US Northwest Coast Mythology, Raven STEALS the sun by means of turning into a pine needle, floating on the water where a young woman was drinking - she ingested him, and became pregnant - she gave pregnant to a boy who actually was Raven...one day when no one was looking, he turned into Raven and opened the treasure box of the household, which was not allowed, and the moon escaped...he was punished, but he did it again, this time he took the sun, and the world was plunged into darkness....Raven in NWCoast and Alaskan stories is considered a "trickster"...but no mention of a "white" raven

Hi Rune! I'm just recently started watching your videos after I've heard about you by a friend of mine and I've listened your animist perspectives through his podcast. I have a question for you that I think you could lend a new insight for me: Has jackdaws ever being referenced in any spiritual, animist or religious context? I know most people talk about ravens or crows in myths and spirituality, but never heard of other corvids like jackdaws being mentioned. Not what I've found on my own. Why I'm interested in the topic is because I have very personal and spirtiual relationship to jackdaws. To me, they're the most sacred of animals in my life. When I'm in the prescence of just a single jackdaw, it feels more like I'm meeting a person than with an animal(even though all animals are people). There is a connectedness that I feel when I look into a jackdaw's clear blue-grey eyes.

I was visited by a man sized raven in a dream. in the dream i had been living in a log cabin and was trying to befriend a crow. I left food out for it and waited for it by the doorway of the cabin, it came and ate, i told it i would be back this time tomorrow. I went and lied down on a bed or cot in the cabin and a man sized raven came in, it started dancing and oddly cawing, rocking its head back and forth to eye me alternating with each of its eyes. i remember being fearful at first then trying to understand what it was trying to say as it was not violent. the last memory i can conjure was thinking it was trying to beatbox, then beatboxing with it but being unsatisified with my own performance, letting the raven take the lead, i danced with it as it made its way from what now seemed more of a hut or yurt, with a great fire in the center. as it left i felt sad that i had felt scared of it and wondered if it had picked up on my negative perception and if i had ushered it off. typing this out i now remember one more thing, i was supposed to return to my dream at the same time to commune with my crow friend and see if i could apologize to the giant hiphop raven.

Rune, your content is really inspiring on Patreon, thanks for your undertaking X.x It's like a cosmogonic continuation of Ymir's myth, which was creation. The bird is surely a frequent fatechanging symbol. In an Akkadian story, the Zú bird (Anzu / Imdugud) steals the tablets of fate so that he can control the fate of everything. In Rg-veda IV.18-27, Indra recovers soma (drink of immortality) for mankind on the back of an eagle. As for the Inuit version of the white raven - due to Spencer Well's genetic research (and Beringia), I can't let go of the direct connection with Indo-European myths, (but this could just as well be diffusionism). It was exciting to hear about the Mansi parallel (I'm Hungarian with Ukrainian roots). A film about the folk traditions of the Mari people: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWOthHtmo8Rjb68

It's funny you're talking about different people independently conjuring up similar ideas. The reason I initially clicked on this video was because I'm writing a novel in which white ravens appear as a motif. After doing some rudimentary googling, it turns out I'd probably be accused of copying George RR Martin if I kept going on with the idea, even though I've never read A Song of Ice and Fire books lol, nor have I seen much of the show. Experiences have happened like this to me multiple times throughout the outlining and drafting process, and I'm having to balance not accidentally copying someone else while still staying true to the themes, story, and world-building I find compelling.
