Jagex should be bought by its employees. Worker Co-op game dev companies are some of the best out there, for customers AND devs. The only issue is that the workers need money, which Jagex is not giving its employees enough to do that. Maybe a fan will buy a majority share and let them do their own thing, for the most part.

Yep, that's what I was going to comment. Gph increased concurrent members by a ton, I'd imagine. Gsh pumped up the mtx sales. Both games also got the duel arena axed. Showing that illegal rmt is down by 40% or whatever is pretty big as the illegal rmt is people not buying bonds. Also, he talked about the increased membership prices. Having premier available 24/7 will definitely increase the average subscribed players. Many players who would have done some 3 month subs, will probably convert to premier since it's so much cheaper than monthly.

I normally DESPISE when companies go public but considering the disaster that is Carlyle's ownership of Jagex, this could potentially be a good thing... though all this BS that they've been pulling lately wouldn't make the game or company look good to me if I were considering to invest in them. Profit is not the only important thing in a business and if a company is actively screwing over their customers like Jagex has been lately, that signals to me that there won't be enough customer loyalty to make an investment worth my time. EDIT: DUDE, imagine if Andrew or MMG bought a significant chunk of shares. Obviously, they wouldn't have a controlling interest (probably not even if they went in together) but man, that's a pipe dream that I would love to see happen.

A lot of this information is accurate. And while it's easy to speculate what's happening, we simply don't know what will happen long term. The idea of Jagex going for an IPO makes sense, but it would likely take quite a bit of time before that happens. This takes a lot of preparation and usually will see the hire of a new CFO or financial VP to lead/carry out the filling for the IPO. This is common with many companies choosing to do this as it takes an incredible amount of experience to conduct. I think the long-term implication of Jagex being traded as a public company is dangerous as it relates to OSRS. RS3 already has a very mature microtransactions model in place that allows for additional revenue streams within the game. Jagex will be forced to maximize growth YoY to fulfill its duties as a viable business listed on the LSE as a public company. I see this as an issue because there are only so many areas within a game you can squeeze profit from before it starts to take a toll on the players... and we all are well aware of what happens to a gaming community when you violate its core principles. It wouldn't be a wise long-term choice for Jagex to take, but with board members to appease, this could be troublesome for the game and its players. But that is a more pessimistic view. There are also some silver linings here too. With the IPO, Jagex would have access to more capital and could add more value to the existing game if the board and those in charge of the overall product direction are savvy enough to do so without affecting the core player experience. Jagex may resort to trying to add new IPs to the portfolio and try to create other great games like Runescape. So at this point, it's a total toss-up as to what will happen. An IPO is scary, but it's inevitable if the company continues to grow and scale the way it has. At the end of the day, Jagex is a company whose purpose is to generate profits for its investors; whether it's private or public, it doesn't matter much. We've weathered the sales storm in the past, and I think the future still looks bright for the game. However, only time will tell. So remember to remain vocal and raise your opinions when unfavorable decisions are made from the top down. We have power as a community, and I believe that people who sit on the boards of gaming companies have learned what does and doesn't work with long-term player satisfaction. Jagex does have data to confirm and support what will happen if certain decisions are made.. and we all know what sorts of decisions have occurred in the past that caused players to rebel. This data is good and will support what happens in the future. In the end, I do expect to see RuneScape as a thriving game for many years to come.

This feels like a loose loose, Carlyle are just doing a pump and dump scheme to maximize short term profit at the expense of the health of the game, that we know, but if they're doing it for an IPO then that's all the game is going to know for the rest of it's short lifespan, we're gonna follow in the footsteps of activision, ubisoft and ea where we the players don't matter and it's just about shitting out money, all we can hope for is Carlyle gets their money and sells it to someone who gives a shit about sticking around

I think you're looking into things a bit too much. The most apparent reason why employees are leaving is that the current owner The Caryale Group they're forced changes to both RS3 and OSRS. A lot of the employees are overworked, underpaid, and more than likely are frustrated at the fact that so many of us players hate the general direction of both games. If Jagex does happen to get bought out again. It's just going to be from an even wealthier company with more unfavorable changes being made.

Time will tell if Jagex become an IPO but it looks like it could be likely given Carlyle's history and business model. Carlyle make money by making changes to the company to generate profits which inturn increases probability for investment. when the time is right they put it up as an IPO, thereby sell shares at a profit.

I wouldn't mind paying more money if their was updates and no roll backs all time and progress why keeping the old school game, well... Old school because that why people play it. Let's hope its not some company to exploit its players and do nothing for the game. Played this game for a good 20 years.

this is a positive, with an ipo you get necessary funding to expand the company as a whole. This would create a free advertisement for the game. Currently there is only a few true gaming stock, like roblox. To clarify, not a gaming company, that is buying other gaming companies to put under as assets. Regarding the fiduciary requirement to make money for the shareholders, it depends on management. If they only care about short term gains, yes it can hurt the game, but if management is looking for long term growth, this can create a better game in the long run. The players would have a bigger voice then before, since its a public company. There were more single gaming companies public listed before, but now its only a few. To me this is necessary for the game to gain more players, since there is so much competition out there. The current player base is aging, no new younger audience. Don't you want a newer younger generation to experienced the game? To put it simple, the rise and fall and rise of runescape? A flux of new players, more youtube, social media creators for the game, sounds better? The wilderness is filled with players again? The players make this game possible, management would have to acknowledge the players sentiment, without the players there is no company. Its a coin flip, in the direction for runescape as a whole.

They seriously don't need more funding, The company is making all-time record profits year on year, just over 50% of it goes to the shareholders. The issue the game currently has is a serious lack of content development. For the last two years, the amount of content that has been added to the game is under half that which was added in the years beforehand, and a majority of the 'new' content that actually came out was just alternate game modes.

Going public is about the only way JaGex could go further downhill. That's how you get the ever-increasing creep of predatory monetization and anti-player behavior. Actual good outcome would be being sold on to an individual or group that wants to just improve the game.

From the perspective of a software dev, cost of software devs is rising at an alarming rate my salary has doubled year over year for the last 2 years and it’s getting ridiculous to retain good talent because more companies are offering more money with remote/hybrid work so I do believe Jagex on rising dev cost.. to put it in perspective when I last applied they paid less than 1/2 of the job I took at the time.. which was a shame, I’ve loved this game since I was a 8/9 in 2005 and it would have been so cool to be able to work on it.. but when the difference is that vast between companies I had to choose what was best for my career at the time :/

I simultaneously appreciate the hell out of this video and your breakdown of why and how things have been going through wierd and drastic changes... while also hating and praying that you're incorrect. While allowing themselves to stake as an IPO is just fact, they still maintain restrictive trading rights (unless, and if they have allowed I'll never touch the game again, there are non-standard international loopholes). I don't blame them for attempting to reestablish their brand name and utilize more modernly known and forward thinking companies... But OSRS is one of and arguably the most prominent LAST BASTIONS of hard-core game play available. They have already become (in my opinion, so no diss on disagreements) way too forgiving on death/trade mechanics as well as conforming to too many complaints about QoL that it's becoming cheesy outside of Ironman mode. You want to AFK while slowly auto casting/triggering then cool. Pay the price by doubling if not more the time it takes to complete a task. QoL updates like that are awesome because they don't recreate mechanics but simply offer options. Allowing too many safety fuctions is what enables bots to pull the kind of crap they do though. Not allowing more trade freedom (albeit they removed most hard restrictions and simply started flagging accounts) and passively forcing price regulations is stupid. Not having to lose jack **it when you die is an insult to the game. Newer players and even some older players might disagree with me, but skill and forethought meant so much more when you were realistically chancing at least half your bank value on a fight during a mid level quest... vs getting utterly owned in the wildy, and being able to throw out 20k and save everything with no sweat. If people like me on OSRS are one out of a hundred or more, then obviously you can't blame developers for focusing on pleasing and appeasing the most people possible. Discounting upper echelon crappy management, the more happy players then the better their jobs are. But I hope they don't take OSRS anymore than they already have in a similar direction to contemporary games.

Man.. I wish the RS3 community could get together and deal with the whales. The game content has slipped to the lowest quality I've ever seen and the only updates we get are stupid MTX outfits and lootboxes. Then the saddest part is all of these whales keep spending hundreds/thousands on the garbage and further reinforce the downward trend in content and quality. The worst part is if Carlyle destroys RS3, gf OSRS.

I do want to point out that revenue does not mean that the company made a profit, so I wouldn't use the revenue metric but the profit one. Jagex also made record profits in that same news article, so screw Carlyle! If they do IPO, I hope that they don't retain majority share voting power. It would be really amazing if players could buy up a significant majority of voting power and literally control the company through shareholder player polls.

Becoming an ipo just means that your responsibility is now entirely to your investors, and that responsibility resolves entirely around making them as much money as possible, and maintaining steady growth in perpetuity. And that strategy is great for earning money, but pretty shit for the product maintaining it's quality. They will cut corners and costs in any way they can to continue that growth quarter by quarter. Expect more layoffs, and more "updates" in tune with the membership price increase we just saw.

companies restructure all the time, there is nothing wrong with that. I would throw this news into the good news bin, having jagex be profitable is an AMAZING thing, because it means it will be around for much longer. Just because a company is bought and sold or is profitable isnt a bad thing, it means more money will be put into development FURTHER down the road. These companies are not here for a quick cash grab they play the long game and when it comes to a video game company that is making/updating/maintaining an MMO in THIS game ecosphere is very impressive. Also an extra $1.50/month is NOTHING compared to other spending, a burger at mcdonalds costs more than that, more money for jagex means more content for us. Give it 6 months - 1 year and they will be looking for new fresh blood to pull into the company BECAUSE they have more money.
