People might hate Desert Treasure, but to me, it remains as one of the most memorable quests to me, just because of the story. Initially you just start out as a normal adventurer that will help out this archeologist unveil a hidden treasure, but the more you progress through the quest, the less it becomes about just some treasure, you go around collecting the 4 diamonds, which has the coolest themes ever: Blood, Smoke, Shadow and Ice. As you finally defeat the guardians and collect their respective diamonds, you return to the pyramid and ascend, and you discover that there was no literal treasure, but something greater... I am a sucker for quests that give you permanent power, this is why I love this quest for the story, because it feels like your character has unlocked more of his potential, same can be said with the Temple at Sentisten quest.

So you're telling me that Runescape DOESN'T follow the conventions of object-oriented programming, but the engine is written in java, which was INVENTED for OOP? Also, OOP was not a "new thing" in the early 2000's, people started using OOP as early as the late 60's!

I dont think that's the case, I think its that this "runescript" DSL developed for defining quest logic and stuff is written in a more functional style. From the short description on the wiki, it looks like it was developed for things like NPC dialogue where you're just scripting out a set of actions with minimal logic. My take on the first story is that the intern probably came up with some hacky ways of doing what he wanted to do by writing logic in these runescript files that didnt really have any place being there. He probably had to implement his own classes to create things that did not exist yet, and maybe the system wasnt really intended for that kind of thing to be done from within the scope of what this intern was working on, and that led to bugs down the line
@tomcheng3903

He means the content development, 'runescript' or whatever it's called - this is probably the case of some dumb cs student going wild & not knowing how to adapt to the codebase, only having been taught one thing in uni, rather than 'lol jagex is so dumb'

Wow... I can’t believe Monkey Madness was done by some random intern. Monkey Madness is, at least nostalgically, my favorite quest in RuneScape. As an 11 year old kid back in 2005, I was still an absolute noob in RS. I had only been playing for a few months. Online quest guides were either nonexistent or were absolutely terrible. I couldn’t manage to find one for MM. It took me almost a week to do that damn quest. It felt like a real accomplishment when I finally finished it and was able to equip that D Scimmy.

Going off of one of my friends who was an intern at Jagex said this. "The daily life at Jagex was uncomfortable the internal politics between management and the developers hindered everyone's creative process, management controlled almost everything. Most of the time interns were stuck on customer support despite signing up to get coding experience. I would not recommend working with Jagex." seems like those Chinese investors sent in their own force of people to micro manage employees.

This sounds like a relatively successful intern program if you ask This Fellow. A few interns produced a good deal of valuable content. Yeah sure they didn't always use good software practices, but that's not too uncommon for college graduates and a few years experience will have them on the right track. As for the problem of tying down a whole developer, this is often completely necessary in the short run because for a company to have a solid long-term outlook, they need to be able to hire new people and those new hires need to have a senior developer get them up to speed. The alternative is that you have a few really solid developers for a while and then you're company's done for if a few of them quit.

Can't help but think it was at least barely inspired by that or maybe it's just a coincidence. Oh yeah, it also talks in sort of an uwu language, and has an attraction to werewolves blood.

Jagax really heard "Allah" which literally means "god" and confused it with "allahu akbar", which just means "god is great", but is associated with jihadists.

I don't get it; you act like he said something super offensive, but all he said was "God is great" in Arabic? Don't get me wrong, I'm an atheist and think all religions are dumb, but I don't get how him putting "allah akbar" in the game is treated as if he used a racial slur or something. I mean I get removing it, but firing him over it? Seems a bit extreme for him slipping his religion into the game. Or again, is there something I am missing, or that you left out of your explanation. Seems, from what you said, like an overreaction, unless again, you aren't saying the actual thing for fear of the algorithm or something.

I'm not sure whether you said OOP was obscure programming, or Jagex was using some sort of obscure programming... Most companies utilize some sort of object oriented programming language: Ruby, Scala, Java, Python, C (variants), PHP, Perl, Visual Basic, MATLAB... The list goes on.

Only disastrous part of their intern programme is that actual Fagex employees didnt check their work... I mean they let an intern write an entire quest in unknown code AND post it to the live game.
