One of the most understated things about Sphinxes in 5e that a lot of people seem to ignore is their capacity for TIME TRAVEL as a lair action, up to 10 years per action. One setting I run in a lot has all sphinxes as time travelers from an extinct civilization trying to ensure the survival of their culture in the future through their enigmatic moves and riddles.

One of the things I love about mythology and riddles, is sometimes honesty is really the best answer. For so many beings, it is better to say "I don't know." than guess, as it shows you have humility. Some even take it as a correct answer, but most will just allow you to leave, without the punishments of a wrong answer. Because, technically you where not wrong.
@GFCOLCQuote2 жыл бұрын
I was hit with a sphinx once, and it was probably my favorite moment. In the game, I was playing a character who unknowingly called upon a contract demon in order to save one of the last children of the familiar of a God. The child, a flying snake, ended up as her familiar (I was a type of summoner) Upon trying to cleanse the child of a unique sickness caused by an otherworldly presence called soul rot, which also claimed her father so she had been studying how to remove it. Upon trying to save it, she wrote symbols on impulse in order to call out to a greater creature to aid her in cleansing it from the child, and something answered. It did cleanse it, by taking the soul rot and purging it from the child by shoving through the soul of my character which then went out and corrupted all of those connected to her family line. Think about doing this to someone who is related to Genghis Kahn, you'd end up corrupting a lot of people... which it did. So, because of the huge influx she was sent out on the adventure. During it she was confronted by the demon who then told her what he had done...what *she had done.* Now, all of this had to be said in order to set up the answer to the riddle. Because the riddle was: "What is a great truth that gives birth to an even greater lie." The answer was not meant for me, but the character it was made for wasn't much of a role player so everyone sat there unsure of what to say. Until, almost instinctively, an answer came to me. My character walked up, and stared the sphinx right in the eyes. Eyes that were paradoxically hardened and broken by what had happened as she said: "It's not my fault."

I feel like one could go pretty meta with them, if they really are literally divinely-ordered obstacles on a quest or sentient avatars of plot progression. I imagine a sphinx that realised he has no existence outside of the plot and is pretty angsty about it, or a sphinx that is loterally incapable of comprehending the world outside of the plot but is unaware of it, in vein of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead". This is guaranteed to make your players' heads spin.

It says on his twitter that he's just taking a vacation. He was working a lot on his book, and now he's taking a break. Sad to not have his wonderful content, but I'm glad he's keeping his mental health up given the amount of burnout among youtubers.

@@maromania7 alright man, thanks for letting me know. I’ve been wondering about this for a while, it’s good to know he’s taking time for himself and working on other things. Hopefully he comes back eventually, but that is up to him. But thanks again man.
