A Georgetown Law School graduate died after he collapsed at Disneyland’s half marathon. Caleb Graves was a Disney superfan and trained for the Disneyland Halloween half marathon. However, the heat was unbearable. Graves said he was worried about the scorching heat. On race day, the high was 108 degrees. When Graves crossed the finish line, he was clutching his chest from having a cardiac arrest. He later died.

You can acclimate to heat and elevation. I did leadville100 a couple weeks ago and some girl had a seizure 12 miles in . Most likely caused by not acclimating to the elevation amd high heart rate. The heat can do similar damage

An important detail getting missed in the reporting is that the temperature was about 77 degrees when the race began at 5am, and mid 80s when most runners finished, within an hour or two of sunrise. So the 12,000 runners in this race (I was one!) weren't foolishly running in the heat of the day (which topped out about 103-104 degrees at Disneyland later that afternoon). It looks like this guy made a mistake the day before overdoing it in the heat, and then didn't listen to his body and ran anyway.

@@Quasar900 It's not a matter of strength, but rather of stamina and endurance. A number of factors could have contributed to this man's death: an underlying heart condition, a bit too much partying with alcohol and then overdoing it in the heat. . . we just don't know. But please take it from your dear Grannylady: Your comment comes across as not really understanding competitive women. From the National Institute of Health : "The study shows that the gap [between women's and men's stamina] shrinks when trail running distance is increased. This demonstrates that endurance is greater in women." You can look this up by Googling "women's vs men's stamina."

It sounds like he wasn't a healthy man. Passing out after 20 minutes of walking his dog was a huge red flag. Also, he likely wasn't drinking enough electrolytes. Drinking only water while sweating is a big mistake. In the military, the number one reason for people passing out was the consumption of either too much or too little water without any electrolytes. Nonetheless, he was so young to die like that, RIP.

I would call myself very healthy, but I came close to passing out in 30+ degree weather (celcius) after a twenty minute walk too. I'm used to walking in hot weather, I had a cap on my head, I'd drunk enough water that day, I wore sunscreen, but the minute I left the house, I was out of breath and my heart was going wild. I pushed through and still walked, but those were the worst twenty minutes of my life, I was terrified and constantly felt like I was going to either be sick or hyperventilate, most likely both. It wasn't a panic attack, I'm sure of that. I took a few breaks sitting down in the shadow and it got better there. This never happened again, thankfully.

100+ degree heat = why didn't they cancel the race?
@HyperWolf
@HyperWolf 6 күн бұрын
Because the races start at 5am and there’s a cutoff time of I believe 3 hours. Basically it wasn’t hot during the race. I think he gave himself heat exhaustion the day before, walking his dog, and went in already exhausted. When you have heat exhaustion you’re supposed to rest, keep cool, and just take it easy or you risk going into heat stroke which can be deadly.

@@HyperWolfthat makes sense. Your comment should be pinned, it is important for people to listen to their bodies and get cleared by a Dr, just to make sure. A doc probably would have said to rest, cool off for at least 24 hrs, (24-48), and it was only a half day later that he went out.
