Have you ever sat on a jury or in the witness box? It is very intimidating. There are signs in that courtroom making it clear what the consequences of perjury are. He was trying to be very careful. Obviously he was running along, saw this guy, found him suspicious looking, and kept running. It was only the next day when the murder made it onto the news that he realized that he had probably seen the murderer and called the police. When you are being pinned down with specifics (were his pants really khaki?) and what you say is being compared to your police report, it's very intimidating to think you might say the wrong thing. It's enough that he saw the accused on the trail, in the area where the victim was killed, and reported his sighting. He wasn't a bad witness.
