I started running late in life for health and then my type A kicked in so wanted to start reaching closer to my potential... sadly I never got to experience the glory years of young guy speed, but I still enjoy striving for PRs and reaching my potential. Good video!

Same. I started when I was 40. I’m 53 now I think it might be possible setting a new PR

Generally speaking, road racing has the master's division starting at age 40 while track starts the master's division at 35. That actually makes a lot of sense: Age starts to matter earlier in performance at the sprints and field events than it does at the distance races.

I really enjoyed this video it reminded me more than ever not to be too hard on myself with my running escapades. As a 71 year old Aussie running 5 times a week including half and full marathons it's good to be reminded that we have to take it easy on occasions and focus on recovery, I'm sure using a roller and stretching has helped me considerably. There should be more videos of this quality for us elderly runners...Well done!

We're glad you enjoyed it, Stuart! Wow impressive. Wishing you many more years of healthy running :) We have a lot of videos in the works, so I'm sure future ones will be Masters themed.

😎 great video! It was right up my alley. Pumped me up for my HM tomorrow! Speaking of masters, hoping to meet Frank Shorter at this race, 2022 Florida Marathon.

Thanks. Enjoy local races at almost 65 y/o. Going in with better attitude and adjusting training work-outs on the fly is good advice. Again, it's just running...

Hit the trails- makes sense to reduce impact and strengthen feet. HOWEVER... everyone needs to train on the surface you race on. If you race on roads (as I do), you need to primarily train on asphalt. Training on trails, especially crushed limestone, is roughly half the training effort and does not prepare you for road racing.

FYI. The video clip of Gene Dykes was not his Florida race. It’s the Scotiabank Marathon in Toronto.

Given that GOAT, Eliud Kipchoge, is 38, and the second best marathoner in the world, Kenenisa Bekele is 40, the masters category of 35 is way too low- at least for the marathon distance.

Curious why you think over 60 runners need to cut our work outs to one per week? Based on what? As a 62 year old I still do 2 quality days a week and a long run during a training block with no issues. I nap all the time!

We referenced a few studies which indicate recovery time needs to be increased for MOST masters athletes. I think we even mentioned once or twice in the video that individuals can race more often or do workouts more frequently if able to. That's awesome you are able to continue training at such a high level, Monte!

Remember .. youngrunners use more force to go faster hence they have more muscle flexibillity ..old runner have to focus on flexibillity it will make you go faster !

Hoenstly I think by 30 there should be a 30-35 option. When I compare my sprinting ability now compared to when I was 19 Im not just as able to recover as quickly or my fastest now is not what it was back then.

I think Master's running should start at age 50, as our population (aka Baby Boomers) age up. Thanks for the GREAT video!!

Agreed! I think 35 is definitely too young. I mean, Eluid Kipchoge is 34 right now. At least 40 sounds more reasonable.
@MonteComeau

@@runnersconnect Kipchoge is over 40 according to some past team-mates. And to be honest he looks more like 40 than 34.

@@MonteComeau Huh, I hadn't heard that! I was surprised to read he's "34" as I would have guessed he's a bit older.

How funny, a 36 yr old is classified as a master runner. I'm 60 and wouldn't consider anyone a master until 45 or older.

yes, i had my fastest years at ages 40-43, I am now 52 and really do feel like a masters now. I went through a series of serious injuries at age 46-49. I now have adjusted my diet, my training and taking much better care of my body with stretching/rest.

All of the points made are correct. However, the most important advice was not given. There is one factor that adversely affects all people regardless of age. That is atherosclerotic vascular disease. It doesn't matter if you've been a runner your entire life. This disease begins early in the life of anyone consuming meat and dairy. There are other adverse effects of this horrifying diet as well. But, aging runners that have been on a meat and dairy diet their entire lives will suffer the consequences.
