It’s better to run the tangents. The corners may seem shorter but when you doing zigzags like this course staying as close to the middle whenever you have to turns in a row is better

girl up front dominated, but somebody has to tell her to stop looking at her watch and just run her race.

She'll develop that sense of pace with more time on the track doing shorter intervals. I'm sure her coach gave her a pace/hr to stick to and that's what she was hyper-focused on during the race as she had no company up there and it can be tough to keep the intensity up. She's young, just a sophomore, so she'll get dialed in with her body in the next couple of years.

My coach told me the same thing on my first race. I got 9th place but I kept checking my watch to see my pace. But now I now that it’s better to just focus on those around you and rely on how you feel more and not your watch.
