Hey everyone! In this episode we were lucky to show a full day (and more!) of my day to day operations as a young business owner in Australia.
Today we're joined by my partner Mel, and Clint who helped me put some bricks into the wall, as my apprentice is away from the action due to his first days at trade school.
Lots of action in this one - from our iconic style of filming, to GoPro, to time-lapse.. the whole lot!
Without further ado, enjoy the video and we'll see you on the next one!

hi Ty when working on the ground the young bricky and i work straight out of barrows with the mortar, we leave a bigger gap between the stacks . not a lot of clean up after. reason we do this is we dont use a labourer.

Good stuff mate,don’t worry. You’ll make mistakes and lose money on jobs but it’s all part of learning. Lay a good brick, keep things tidy and be honest and don’t try and make huge bux straight away. You’ll get there✌️

Really love the videos and also those bricks look lovely to lay. I’m also getting to the job at 6:30 and it’s dark aswell. I can’t mark profiles until 7 haha. I’d love to work with you but I’m in NSW. Looks fun to have nice single stories with access so you’re able to push a barrow around instead of having to walk buckets through the bricklayers

Always important to start the day with a quick tug. I started as a self employed brickwork I was 20.. to much e energy that's why you need to be getting a tug in every time you get 5 minutes

@bricksbyty

Hey there, at 23:19 we tuck the flashing underneath the paper. We usually get the course down first before we tuck it in so that the flashing is in place and exactly where we want it.

It’s alright using shovels till you get a laborer or apprentice that can’t get enough on the shovel and creates mortar variation.
@bricksbyty
@bricksbyty 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, our earlier videos I bucket batch to avoid that problem, but as I'm not really making the mixes anymore, have to take into consideration the weight of the buckets, on top of the intensity of labouring.

Shovels are easier on your body. Agreed. But you’ll see, some blokes can’t even get enough sand on a shovel. Enjoy haha it’s a fun journey

You’re a quick worker mate. I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to be your age and fitness. You might want to pace yourself a bit because you may be on the trowel for the next 40 years. Not always a great idea to leave the front until last as many brickies do because if you run short at the end you may need to blend in extra bricks from a different batch at the most obvious place on the job. Metricon are a pretty safe bet but if you end up working for other builders be wary of getting too indebted to them. You’re not a source of credit you’re a service provider. Get paid for your service under your terms not the builders extended terms. History is full of builders dragging out payment only to go under leaving the subbies empty handed. Batching the mud by shovel is fine but just remember a peaked shovel of dense sand is not equal to a more flat shovel of fluffy cement. That’s the mistake that many apprentices make, for that reason it’s best to either bucket batch the cement after having determined how full that bucket needs to be to be equal to the equivalent volume of sand, or work out how many equivalent shovels of sand goes into a bag of cement. So I’m saying don’t rely on shovel batching the cement component of the mix, use some method other than shovel for the cement. It’s easier as well as more accurate. You could always do a small test mix every now and then using all buckets to see if the mortar colour looks correct, colour is a good guide to strength, give or take.

Hey there! Thank you for your kind words, that really does go a long way. I love the trade, but being on the tools isn't the end goal, but rather building a community around a trade that has lost a lot of love over the decades. Metricon have looked after me since the start, but I do hope to branch out one day! We will keep bucket batching in mind definitely, because it is textbook after all. We also want to keep in mind the bodies of our workers and taking the labouring into consideration.

Whenever I’m in a street and I notice heaps of brickies I get paranoid as about shit getting knocked off.. Any brickie who can’t afford clamps, profiles, or mud boards needs to chuck it in.
